Care to elaborate? Is it too short or too long for you? I ask, since I personally would have preferred 48h deadlines, but am under the impression most here have less of a taste for as "long" deadlines. Of course, in the pbem-community I hail from, 48 hours is considered breakneck speed... But I'm trying to go with the flow here, so I opted for 24 hours.

At this stage I will join a game not under 48h deadlines (as I said in the other thread).
I just don't have time for proper diplomacy in less than that time.

But I think the majority of people here prefer shorter phases.

I think that you have noticed, but unlike ftf games, here the retreats a builds pahses have the same time (and diplomacy is allowed), so for 48h deadlines a fall retreat and build phase can take 4 days...
It doesn't happen if people commit to finalize those orders as soon as possible. If you don't know yet, if everyone presses ready button when inputing orders, the turn will resolve before the deadline.

I'm also ok with a longer deadline; my schedule can be pretty irregular. I'm in two very slow games right now (won't make that mistake again) but anywhere from 24h-72h is fine by me.

I assumed retreats and adjustments would be separate phases, as folding them into one (as is common in human-adjucated pbem) would possibly require the submission of conditional orders. Easy to do in writing, but difficult and cumbersome for an auto-adjucation system as this one. The various pbem judges (e.g. DPJudge) also have retreats and adjustments separate.

The PBEM Judges allow for different deadline lengths. Seems that webDiplomacy ought to at some point also get that functionality rather than have always a uniform length ofr all deadlines.

Crossgaming = Metagaming = Bannable. So generally you won't see much of that in quality games. Lol

Carebearism describes in Diplomacy too cosy relationships that run counter to the spirit of the game.

For instance, the newbie Italy I encountered in my first trainwreck of a game here, told me that both France and Russia were his buddies (in real life) and he would under no circumstances attack them. That's carebearism in its extreme form.

A definite no-no.

All just a not so subtle ploy to come across as a harmless fellow everyone wants to have as an ally.

I've definitely had some pretty long alliances, but I usually try to tell my allies "If I see the solo I'm taking it." And I expect the same from them. Allying because you are friends in real life is definitely against the rules (except in the rare case of a fixed-alliance game where everyone knows this to be true-- but that isn't really the same game.) Any alliance or grudge made for reasons outside that game is metagaming and is not permissible.
