What McCain said during the last debate...
About 25 minutes into the debate McCain (in reference to townhall meetings) said, "The way Barry Goldwater and Jack Kennedy agreed to do before the intervention (touches nose & corrects himself)... the tragedy at Dallas."

Who will be the next President of the United States?
Now that the debates are over and with only weeks to go before the election, who do you think will win the Presidency and (if you are inclined) why?

Vote by adding to the tally:

Obama - 1
McCain - 0

Keep in mind, this isn't necessarily about who you will vote for (if you are a US citizen), just who do you think will win...

Obama - 2
McCain - 0

Obama's been gaining in the polls due especially in key states - the projection I read recently had Obama at about 340 and McCain at about 180.

mcCain something will happen/be fiddled or maybe even though i hate to say it obama wont win because the majority of america doesnt want a black president even if they wont admit it
Archonix (246 D)
16 Oct 08 UTC
That's a shocking figure from Abydos1's site - 95% chance of Obama winning.

I do believe that that website is a little off-centre though. A 53% chance of a land-slide in Obama's favour seems very high. I haven't done the figures though so I don't know.

Obama, despite McCain's stupidity, managed to un-come-back at the last minute and heroically lose the debate, even when all odds were stacked against it.

Neither candidate offers what the US needs. I'm voting for a third party.

(Of course, my post wasn't really a reply to the question).

I think Obama will win. This data is a week or two old, but NPR reported that among the states Bush won in 2004, Obama had made substantial progress in some of them and even has an outright majority in a few. Of the states Kerry carried (ha!) in 2004, the best McCain has managed to do is trail Obama by at least five percentage points.

'O' has it in the bag, not because he's all that good but because people are rightfully disgusted with the Republicans. I'll be casting a pointless uncounted write-in vote for Ron Paul...
Sicarius (673 D)
16 Oct 08 UTC
my write in will be 'NO'
You vote Sicarius?? You participate in democracy to elect evil rulers of government?
Archonix (246 D)
16 Oct 08 UTC
Do you consider a write-in that will intentionally be discounted wlecting evil rulers dingleberry? Its a form of protest.
Invictus (240 D)
16 Oct 08 UTC
It's a waste of time is what it is.

If you're not going to vote responsibly don't vote at all.
A write-in is still tallied, no? If you can write-in ANYONE, I assume they would count a 'no' vote as well. if 'no' actually got a substantial number of votes, they would go out and search for someone named 'No'. Your vote would be counted towards % of population that voted, so you are condoning and participating in democracy. (Speaking of which, if there was a successful write in candidate, say 'john anderson' in 1980. If he won, how would they determine WHICH John Anderson is president?)
stratagos (3269 D(S))

I think even write-in candidates have to register, even if they don't do so on a party's platform...

I'm british and my stereotypical view of America make's me think that America will never elect a black president.

So:
Obama - 5
McCain - 1

But come on America, prove me wrong! I like Obama!
jenspo (1242 D)

I have to agree with Scaae. American elected W. Bush... Twice! McCain/Palin are better than Bush/Jesus. So they elect republican again.. I predict a Fear campaign the last week, and then:

Obama - 5
Palin - 2

Assuming McCain wont survive from the election to the inaguation ceremoni.
DeliciousWolf (112 D)
16 Oct 08 UTC
Obama - 6
McCain - 1

I'm an ex-pat Canadian, and my view echoes scaaeI04's; there will certainly be political scandals as Republican's try and cheat the election and disenfranchise all blacks/hispanics (Florida again?) but this time, thank god, the force of Obama's win is too strong to derail.
Anyone know what happens if McCain dies today? Or if McCain dies after being elected but before inauguration?
DrOct (219 D(B))
16 Oct 08 UTC
I beleive that if he dies after being elected but before inauguration then Palin would be sworn int (my god that's a terrifying thought!). Before the election though... I have no idea. And I could certainly be wrong about the other part too.

i think its really rude of you guys talking about his death so frivolously... have some respect, he's served this country for almost all his life
DeliciousWolf (112 D)
16 Oct 08 UTC
Lazysummer> It's not "frivolously", if McCain wins he will be the oldest elected President ever, his health isn't good, he's had cancer 4+ times, and he looks, well sickly. Being President ages people badly. His possible death in office, or before, is a real concern and has nothing to do with his service to this country, for which I respect him.

Yep, FiveThirtyEight.com is pretty amazing. They're performing a comprehensive statistical analysis on all of the data coming out of this election; I'd advise you to read the FAQ if you're interested in their methods. While the 95% might be hard to believe Obama has been making gains almost everywhere; just take a look at the current battleground states (http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/10/538s-battlegrounds-as-of-mid-october.html). What where the battleground states a month ago are strongly leaning towards Obama now, here's a quote from a recent post:

"Senator Barack Obama now holds states totaling 286 electoral votes outside the battleground zone. We project 78 more electoral votes to go blue on Election Night, for a total of 364 in Obama's column. West Virginia's 5 votes are pure tossup, and states totaling 169 electoral votes for Senator John McCain."

as well.
great site for stat lovers.

only a dead hooker or a live boy can stop Obama being the president

obama 7
mccain 1
How is talking about his death frivilous? If he wasn't 74, I wouldn't worry so much about a Palin administration.

To pause or not to pause... that is the question
In one of my games, a user requested to pause the game as he was not able to enter moves. I have chosen to accept, but the thought of not accepting crossed my mind (one reason being that the player is in no way bound by their pledge to start it again at a certain time).

End of Game Statements. Brief explanation?
I read of the existence of EOG statements in some other post, but - not having finished a game yet - I do not exactly know what this means (who does it? What is the typical content of it? Etc...)

Anybody would like to explain? Thanks!

3rd Presidential Debate: Best Moment ?
For me, the best moment was when McCain asked Obama how much his fine on Businesses ('Joe the Plumber') is if they didn't provide healthcare. He really hammered Obama on it. And Obama replied "zero, I provide an exception for small businesses." McCain was just floored, stunned, and looked like a dear in the headlights, a shocked/blank expression for a full minute.
