Why we love Webdiplomacy.net
I like this website because people here are unique.

I appreciate that this forum is smart and intimidating. I have always been labelled an idiot or a genius and here its amusing how I am somehow both.
I wanna apologize though for being rude and deliberately misleading to this community. I also wanna say this site has already given me some friends I want for life.

Windows 10
So, it seems Microsoft is aggressively forcing me to upgrade to Windows 10 whether I like it or not. I have a few questions for fellow webdippers who are more tech-savvy than me.

I am getting an update notification every day that either requires me to begin the Windows 10 installation immediately, or delay it. Those are the only options - there is no "no thanks" option, and the maximum delay allowed is 8 hours.

- Is Windows 10 good, and is it stable?
- Are there any downsides to Windows 10 if you're running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1?
- Is there an easy and safe way I can prevent the Windows 10 updater from running?

If you are still using Windows 7 then I recommend you do the upgrade. Windows 8 and 10 are both much faster when starting up.

My upgrade from Window 8.1 to 10 was not without some teething problems but I think 10 is better than its predecessors.

If you don't want to see that Windows upgrade nag then see this article.

What teething problems?

A friend told me he lost a whole load of documents when his Windows 10 upgrade was forced on him by Microsoft.

I have had three problems (now fixed) with my upgrade to 10.

1. Initially, I had to uninstall/reinstall my Nvidia drivers because they stopped working properly.
2. The start button stopped working at one point and I had to run some Powershell commands to get it working again. This happened on two of my computers.
3. A recent Nvidia update meant that my computer would not start up normally. Solution was uninstall/reinstall Nvidia.

One of my (older) laptops was running very sluggishly prior to the upgrade, I don't know why but it is now running much more smoothly since upgrading to 10. So for me it has been worthwhile.

"A friend told me he lost a whole load of documents when his Windows 10 upgrade was forced on him by Microsoft."

I suspect user error. I can't think of a reason why that should have happened.

I do recommend keeping documents on a separate drive (or at least partition) from your OS. That way even if the OS fails completely you keep your documents. And of course always backup your documents on a separate drive. Harddrives do fail.

By the "start button" I mean the onscreen Windows button (that sits in the bottom left-hand corner). As I mentioned that stopped working at one point after the upgrade.

I can't stand Windows 10. I found that my computer could no longer handle basic tasks, like playing videos. 99% of the CPU was suddenly dedicated to Windows error reporting. I ended up putting Windows 8 on a second computer, and I'm sticking with it.
If you do downgrade to Windows 10, research your installation and privacy options thoroughly first. Microsoft seem determined to spy on you. There are numerous YouTube videos on the subject.

The upgrade feature of Windows 10 is a disaster. If you want to switch, you should do a clean install.

You can have my copy of Win 7 Pro, when you rip it from my cold, dead hands.

The 'forced' upgrade to 10 is easily switched off. Google it.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)

Right, so the general consensus is that I should not auto-upgrade to Windows 10.

@ abgemacht: I don't particularly want to switch. Microsoft is attempting to force me to. I object to that just on a gut response - I don't think Windows 8.1 is the best OS ever, but it's stable and my computer runs absolutely fine without any problems. I'm not keen to risk introducing problems when there aren't any.

Haven't had any problems with Windows 10, but I never upgraded. I simply bought a new laptop which had Windows 10.

Coincidental of course. I didn't buy a new laptop to get Windows 10 :P

I'm running Ubuntu, it seems fine, i get regular updates (on a long-term support version, so i don't need to do major upgrades) i doubt i will ever go back to windows ( though playing games in wine can be a struggle at times, it is actually getting very good )

Jamiet99uk: I haven't updated from Windows 8.1 yet because I want to delete some files on my computer first and haven't gotten around to it, but I've done a lot of research on Windows 10 and everything I've read points to it being a great upgrade.

You should back-up your hard-drive before you update, of course, just to be on the safe side. It's also worth checking the compatibly tool on that update nag program, but if you already have Windows 8 then all your installed programs should still be compatible.

auto- Upgraded to Windows 10, no problems at all....othe than the fact that I still have a piece of shit HP laptop that has never worked correctly, which has nothing to do with the OS. Fuck Carly Fiorina...yeah...I know...she's not head of HP anymore...but it was a great company BEFORE she was there...and has sucked ass ever since.

Well it happened anyway without my consent. I was on my computer with programs running and without any prompt or warning, no dialog box or anything, and no opportunity to save or backup anything, the computer auto shutdown, and began installing Windows 10.

Ninety minutes later and it's done. I don't seem to have lost any files other than the document I'd begun typing. All my files seem ok. Windows 10 boots up about as quickly as Windows 8.1 did and the interface is slightly nicer.

Ok then, no harm done as far as I can see, although a forced install with no prompt or warning seems a bit unfriendly.

@jamie

I understand. I'm saying if you do choose to update, you should do a full install. Some people here have said they've had no problem with the upgrade, but it is well documented online that many people are not so lucky.

Overall, Windows 10 is fine, except for their update and data collection policies. They basically try to take as much of your data as possible and give you little control over future updates. The reality, though, is that if you aren't willing to switch to OSX or Linux, you may as well switch (unless you have legacy software you're concerned about no longer working).

Creating a string of misleading threads.
This is certainly considered forum spam. When I open my forums tab and have upwards of 3 of these threads all made by the same person that is spam. This would be akin to my following this thread with a "Creating a string of non-misleading threads" and a "Creating a string out of leading threads."
