Kim Jong-un's Popularity Stagnates
There's concern for the North Korean leader today as election results become known. Despite his best efforts to establish himself with the people, the percentage of the vote won by Kim in his district was on a par with the poorest performing candidates across the nation. Those election results in full below:

Rape Culture
So one of my female friends informed me 10 minutes ago that today is international Womens Rights day, or some shit like that, and it sprang a short debate about various women's right issues. Can someone please explain to me the merits of believing in rape culture, cause it just sounds like pure bullshit to me.

Miltarialy Rusia will take Crimia for sure, the adage is get there first with the most men, Russia are a shoe in. As the Crimia is majority ethnic Russian speakers, they also have political and legal cover. Russian law allows invasions to protect Russians. They have bigreason for keeping a black sea port, so no amount of western hand ringing will prevent Crimia fallling IMHO. Its not like west will take up arms against Russia on this one. The rest of the Ukraine will stay intact under west leaning President. West will pick up the tab of keeping it afloat. Russia +1 Europe -1.

The "fascist" putsch has little chance of succeeding since Janukovych wisely moved the state coffers before they stormed in to seize them. Governing a country without money is a different beast than shouting slogans on squares.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
28 Feb 14 UTC
@redhouse: did you have a specific scenario in mind? I hate it when your country has to pay :)
@Maniac - but Russia would violate a treaty that they signed in 1992 guaranteeing the sovereignty of Ukraine. They physically cannot break that treaty without bringing the other two signatories of it - the UK and US - into a war. So, we won't see Russia annex Crimea. Not outright anyways.

21:32: Ukraine's UN Ambassador Yuriy Sergeyev tells the UN Security Council that Russian military helicopters and transport planes are "entering" his country and Russian armed forces have seized Crimea's main airport, AP reports.

Seems you were right goldfinger
Putin33 (111 D)

The Bandera-ites are done. Russian military isn't in Crimea, these are self-defense forces. Somebody is spreading misinformation. Yanukovich has publicly told Russia not to intervene.
Putin, there are videos of dozens of attack helicopters flying over Crimea. They certainly aren't Ukraine's
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/ukraine/10668357/Russia-admits-that-it-has-moved-troops-in-Ukraine.html
Looks more like you are right, Maniac
Putin33 (111 D)
28 Feb 14 UTC
The Prime Minister of Crimea has said there is no need for Russian military assistance. Ditto Yanukovich. The people who seized the airports were not Russian soldiers, but Crimean self-defense forces.
cleel1122 (100 D)

When have the Russians ever not been willing to use a "spontaneous local uprising" to their advantage? It doesn't matter who does the deed, so long as the payoff is Russian control in the end.
Putin33 (111 D)
28 Feb 14 UTC
By "dozens" you mean ten. And this was as described by Ukrainian border guards. Where are the 'videos'?
Putin33 (111 D)
28 Feb 14 UTC
I do enjoy how the Bandera-ites are whining about the seizure of government buildings in Crimea. Apparently copying their own putsch is inadmissible.
Putin33 (111 D)
28 Feb 14 UTC
Protecting the Black Sea fleet, not an armed invasion.

As usual the Russophobic pro-Bandera press has no shame.

I'm actually with Putin here, if Germany was on the brink of collapse, you'd see the US flying troops into Ramstein to protect the base. But then again, Russian intentions remains to be seen. We have Putin33 on record saying this is only a protection of the Black Sea fleet and therefor Russian sovereignty, we of course, can assume that he feels that escalating their activities would be unacceptable.
Maniac (189 D(B))
28 Feb 14 UTC
Putin33 - many conflicts are started by 'defensive actions'. Do you think the Russian Black Sea fleet needs protecting? If so from whom?

Russians to Welcome Crimean Secession?
http://news.yahoo.com/top-lawmaker-russia-welcome-crimea-152337948.html Let's keep this one specific, given that we already have a main thread for the Crisis in Ukraine: 1. Your thoughts on Crimea's stated intention to secede and Russia's warm response, 2. SHOULD Crimea secede, 3. WILL it happen and 4. SHOULD Crimea be considered "Russia," as these demonstrators seem to think?

Why Professors should give the students their midterms and exams back
I've always hated how most professors don't let you look at a midterm or exam after righting it. I'm always convinced that its because they're lazy fucks who want to keep the exam the same every year and don't do it to prevent us from being able to sell said exams to our underclassmen. Below is the list of reasons why I strongly think profs should give students their marked midterms and exams back

To thin the draw or not thin... that is the question...
I think it an added dimension to the on-line game and like the extra dynamics and strategy it affords. Particularly in GB where there is no collusion. Earn your place in the draw or punish a grabber by throwing a solo... all part of the game.

What's the best lesson you've learned in a Diplomacy game?
Game-related lesson, that is. While I'm not big on the forum, I do like reading the game-related threads from time to time. The "Letting your ally win" discussion spurred the above question for me. My answer below.

Gunboat/Press hybrid game
I just thought about the idea of playing a game where the first year is full press through the 1901 builds, and the game turns to gunboat after the fact. It would essentially be a gunboat game that can have crazier openings and break the mold of having very similar 1901 years from game to game. Anyone interested in trying this out?

Letting Your Ally Win
I recently played two PPSC games (a normal world gameID=132877,and a modern gunboat gameID=132764), in both of which a player decided not to attack the leader, resulting the leader to solo and the other coming in second. Do you think letting your ally win is ever acceptable?

An Open Question to Putin33: What Do YOU Want in the World?
What do you want with regards to Eastern-Western Relations? With Putin's intervention in the Crimea and the Ukraine crisis on the whole? Syria, where you and I differ again? Israel/Palestine, where you and I differ again (which I find interesting given that I want them to have their own state and have criticized the Israeli encroachment into the West Bank, but I digress.) If you could have EXACTLY what you wanted in each scenario, snap your fingers and it's done--what would you WANT?
