Looking for a replacement player in the SoW game.
PM me if you're interested. Please do not post interest here since it's an anonymous game. Any player that is interested will do, but I place preference on those that have completed games and have not had a track record of CDs.

Hail to the Redskins?
http://washington.cbslocal.com/2014/06/10/minute-long-change-the-mascot-ad-to-air-nationally-during-game-3-of-nba-finals/ The commercial in there will be aired in seven major markets (including Washington) during Game 3 of the NBA Finals. We've had the discussion before...but since we can all use a break from the seemingly-weekly reminders of school shootings (one today in Oregon)--1. Think they SHOULD change the name and 2. WILL the name be change soon?

obi: The term "redskin" was not a derogatory term until misinformed, guild laden, white activists decided it was.

@ Chaqa: It's not offensive because it was designed by consortium of tribes.

"The term "redskin" was not a derogatory term until misinformed, guild laden, white activists decided it was."

Uh-huh.

Would you mind explaining how those very-non-white Native American groups such as, oh, the National Congress of American Indians decry the term as offensive?

Seems to me like that's more than a few whiny Berkeley students to me.

http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/us/definition/american_english/redskin

"Redskin is first recorded in the late 17th century and was applied to the Algonquian peoples generally, but specifically to the Delaware (who lived in what is now southern New York State and New York City, New Jersey, and eastern Pennsylvania). Redskin referred not to the natural skin color of the Delaware, but to their use of vermilion face paint and body paint. In time, however, through a process that in linguistics is called pejoration, by which a neutral term acquires an unfavorable connotation or denotation, redskin lost its neutral, accurate descriptive sense and became a term of disparagement. Red man is first recorded in the early 17th century and was originally neutral in tone. Red Indian is first recorded in the early 19th century and was used by the British, far more than by Americans, to distinguish the Indians of the subcontinent from the Indians of the Americas. All three terms are dated or offensive. American Indian and Native American are now the standard umbrella terms. Of course, if it is possible or appropriate, one can also use specific tribal names (Cheyenne, Nez Percé, etc.)."

^So...bullshit...

It's an old term--like most English phrases, it's gone through revisions over the years, but it's been a pejorative for a long time...

Even if I was to be extremely generous and say that "long time" was more like 100-150 years rather than since the mid-to-late 17th century.

Furthermore, AGAIN--the Redskins' original owner?

George Wallace, a notorious racist...

You do not get the benefit of the doubt when your owner could quite possibly make Donald Sterling look sensitive by comparison.

I can't believe that in the land of tolerance there is no place for the racists/bigots or misinformed. If we are so anti-bigoted that we refuse to recogonize anyone else's right to be different then we have become them. No better, but surely worse for the racist/bigot does not try and change us; he only states what he is. But we, the enlightened must force him to change. Bullying of the bully is still bullying. If you truly believe that a team who wears a native American symbol and uses a term that may be offensive to you is somehow connected to your existence or controlling your destiny as a human being then you are a very sad person and have my sympathy.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
18 Jun 14 UTC
1. Who said anything about controlling destiny?

2. So...we shouldn't penalize or even look down upon racism, then?

3. "Bullying of the bully is still bullying" Fuck it, I'll go full-Godwin here--

So we were wrong to bully that mean old bully Adolf?

Really?

By that logic, Czech, we should all just turn the other cheek whenever we OR any innocents are bullied, because bullying said bully would be, um, bullying, and therefore bad, even if A. the bully started it B. the bully deserved it and C. Innocent people are hurt by that bully you refuse to bully?

Well, that's just bully!

I'll weigh in here.

Why was it necessary for ANYBODY to give a shit that slimy money grubbing Jews were being issued their justifiable correction by Nazi Germany?

F.D.R., your last decent POTUS, obviously felt the same.

What was the Jew reaction to that?

Did they give a Fuck that REAL HUMAN BEINGS would die in battle to rescue a bunch of clannish money grubbers? Did they attempt FINANCIAL extortion to bring this about?

Look at Apartheid Isreal and the Palestinian Holocaust, if you want to talk about fucking American international obligation, you IGNORANT kike.
Draugnar (0 D X)

I'm going to lay this out simply. The land of the free means the *government* has to tolerate the "bullies", not individuals or other groups. Ibly the *government*. We are free from an oppressive *government* telling us what we cannot do and what we must do in certain situations. They can still order us to pay taxes and such, but the government can't tell us to go to church at decide that the church we are going to is wrong and prohibit it.

But the people of this land can tell any old asshole any time to go fuck themselves and should stand up for the bullied by putting the bullies in their place. That's not *government* passing a law; that's self moderation.

bo I was just coming here to post that (about the trademark, not sympathy for mapleleaf).

Here's my #hotake: People in the Redskins organization are ecstatic about this. I wouldn't be surprised if they intentionally screwed things up to make it easier. Snyder and the other guys at the very top are idiots and might fight this for real. The smart move would be to use the time cost of the appeals process to roll out a new mascot, which in an organization as large and profitable as the NFL must take months.
bo_sox48 (5202 D Mod (G))
18 Jun 14 UTC
Yeah, well, the government and the NFL can do whatever they want. It doesn't change our history with the various native peoples of the continent nor does it do anything to assist the problems that people face on the reservations. In fact, I'd argue that it deflects attention away from them. They either need to come to a resolution on the name thing quickly and focus on helping the most deprived group in the country or just drop the charade and let the NFL figure it out.
Draugnar (0 D X)
18 Jun 14 UTC
It's really pretty easy to handle. Find a local tribe, talk to the elders, and rename the team after the tribe. The mascot could probably remain the same.
ckroberts (3548 D)
18 Jun 14 UTC
Draug, that is a good idea. Put some amount of money from sales toward tribal schools etc, and boom, Washington Powhatan (or whatever). But I don't think most Indians look like the Redskins logo Indian, plus you'd have to change so much with the name anyway that you'd want a new mascot.
Draugnar (0 D X)
18 Jun 14 UTC
True, but it could be a tribe approved variation on the mascot. Has PR bonus and keeps the theme going strong.
ckroberts (3548 D)
18 Jun 14 UTC
I think I'd copy what the competent colleges do. FSU has the permission of the Seminole tribe, and I think they don't even allow people to use the word "mascot" to describe Osceola. Utah is the Utes but they have a hawk as their symbol, so Washington could go with something relevant to the tribe or location (there's already an NFL panther, maybe a wolf? Did the Powhatan care anything about wolves?).
ckroberts (3548 D)
18 Jun 14 UTC
But they might not do that, because everyone in charge of the NFL is money-grubbing to an extent normal people couldn't understand, and Snyder in particular is a money-grubbing idiot who is proof against the concept of the United States as a meritocracy. Snyder will insist they fight to the Supreme Court, and they'll end up changing names to the Bulldogs or something equally generic.
