Muting and being muted...
This thread will revive an old debate, but maybe bring a new perspective on it.
Cachimbo (1181 D)

So I had an "internet bout", yesterday, on Facebook, with a fairly well-known public figure (that is, well known in my province's media). I argued my points fairly well I think, and had to fend off all of his supporters (a fairly ideological gang). At some point, I realized that I wanted to say things to the guy that should probably be said through messages, so I did (we went to school together and so I felt like that sort of thing should be said privately so that people didn't think I was trying to show off).
Anyway... after a bit of an exchange, through messages and on his wall, the dude kept ignoring my arguments and in return was producing nothing but ad hominem attacks. Then, seeing how he would likely not "win" the debate, he chose to mute me. In fact, he made his Facebook profile unsearchable and unfoundable, making damn sure I would never voice criticism again.

Now, some of you know that I'm not exactly the type to engage in ad hominem attacks or sophistry. Given my academic training, it's just not something I like to do. So there's really no doubt that the guy muted me because he couldn't argue back (and this has been confirmed to me by a few people who read the whole thing).

I therefore felt legitimated in taking his muting me as a sign of my ... victory. Well, a victory of sorts anyway, since I would have much preferred to see him "get it" and be convinced by my arguments.

But in short: I interpreted my getting "muted" as a victory.

Then later, in the evening, I thought back on how I muted people here. I thought of Tettleton and Dip-shit 33... I recalled how I told them that I was muting them... And I thought: I just fucking gave the win away!!!

So yeah... I'm un-muting. No more muting. Talk away, dumb asses! I'd rather know what the imbeciles are thinking, so as to be prepared to their bullshit and refine my own arguments, than give them the satisfaction to think that "they were too hot too handle".

Tettleton, dipshit, if you're still around, I hear you.

Except that sometimes muting people doesn't give them the win. Trolls want attention and muting them reduces yet another person who will respond to them so, in fact, your mute frustrates and causes them to lose in that regard. Othertimes, the mute is for your own sanity and to prevent them wasting your time, something else the trolls get off on, so muting again means they *don't* win as you no longer watse your time with their inane ramblings. You have to judge each case individually.

A good example would be the current discussion with Maniac regarding forcing the CoE to marry gays. I coudl mute him or even mute the thread, but that would be him winning if he knew. But because I respect him and his opinion, even if I disagree with it and the bad analogies he is trying to use, I won't even consider it. In the case of Tettleton, he is muted just ebcause he contributes nothign to the forum or the site in general. I once had mapleleaf muted because he giot off on trying to get me ranting and raging and by muting *him*, I won because he didn't get to see reactions from me (we've since found a mutual peace if not some form of respect).

So you need to judge each case individually. For my part, most of the people I have muted have either gone away from the site willingly, been banned for one reason or another, or I have unmuted them and give each argument from them a chance.

No - muting is not necessarily a sign of victory. Sometimes someone is so obnoxious and so off-base and so unreachable that there is no point in subjecting yourself to their vile nonsense.

In the past, when I was *much* more of a flaming asshole than I am trying to be today, I know that I was muted often and deservedly, not because I won any arguments.

MUTING IS VICTORY

I argued with a newscaster once on camera during an interview... I smoked on him. He thought he knew something about baseball and he was a bit off. They ended up canceling my interview segment completely and filled it in with someone else... I've never stopped laughing. Yes, it's a victory for me.

Wait a minute... can people tell when you mute threads? Sometimes I mute them just because they're not relevant to me and I don't want them popping up to the top of my forum, not with the intent of insulting. Can people see that?

I'm not sure I understand, OP. When TC muted me, it was clearly because I win. When I muted TC, it was clearly because he's an obnoxious loser.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

@hecks, no. There is no way for someone to know that you muted a particular thread.

But if you mute a particular person and try and send them a PM, I believe you get a message saying your PM was blocked, thus letting you know that they muted you.

I used to have KA and TC muted just because I never cared about their posts and it cleaned up the forum for me. But then I removed those mutes just to see if they were still around and still junking up the forums. Turned out they weren't as far as I have noticed.

I agree with Draugnar's and krellin's stance. Who "gets the win" depends on the situation.
I'm mostly curious now who you were arguing with, Cachimbo... sounds like someone I'd definitely be familiar with.

Are you from Québec, Stackelberg?

The guy is Mathieu Bock-Côté, a polemicist as far as I'm concerned, a popular "intellectual" to others, and most certainly a voice of the more reptilian kind of québécois nationalism that seems to thrive on social networks. He wrote, for a Montreal newspaper, a fictional dialogue where Canadian federalists, who celebrated Greek independence, are shown idiotic if they do not also celebrate Québec's independence. The whole thing banked on an identity between the two independences. And it was very much received by people as saying just that... and rightfully so. Since I thought this was actually something that was dangerous to their own views (as it is a false argument that can easily be attacked and demolished AND as it sets the whole debate on Québec's independence in terms that confuse rather than elevate), I thought it a good idea to say that it should have been a touch more rigorous and recognize, from the get go, that there is no such identity between the two independences. The point was easy enough to make.

But I see some truth in what you guys are saying: being muted interpreted as a victory is contextual. Fair enough. Maybe that's why I have not yet made the effort of un-muting the suckers! hehehe
I live in Ontario, but I was just curious if I'd heard of him. There are only so many well-known sovereigntists, after all (which I assumed he was when you specified he was well-known in your province).

I've come across his name before and I've definitely heard others make the comparison to Greece before. Pretty specious, I agree.

I mute threads I'm not interested in, just to get more threads on a page; but I've never muted any of the posters here - their rants are often funny enough to be worth the low signal to noise ratio.
Cachimbo (1181 D)
07 Feb 13 UTC
Yeah... that might be a good way to take into account the contextualist claim made earlier.

There's a big difference between muting someone because you can't answer them properly and muting someone because you respect yourself and don't feel the need to discuss, exchange or argue with people that offend you in some ways and can't open their sights to what you say.

Just saying...
Draugnar (0 DX)
07 Feb 13 UTC
@Speaker - muting threads doesn't put more on the page. If you mute every threasd on this page right now, you will have an empty page one because muti9ng is done via javascript. Server side (which determines how many threads to put on the page) doesn't know you have the threads muted.

I am routinely shocked...
... at how frequently I find myself in conversations with people twenty or more years' my senior, only to sadly learn that they still believe completely in silly concepts such as good and evil or better and worse.

Does this bother anybody else like it does me?
