04 Feb 13 UTC
In socialist union run nations like the US, perhaps. In the UK they get in the region of 17-20 grand. Calling them engineers is just wrong, though.

The big easy money is to be found on the railways. Thousands of people being paid a small fortune for sitting on their arses.

Draugnar (0 DX)
04 Feb 13 UTC
The *good* money is in IT, especially hardware engineering, networking, and software engineering. But for what they do, garbage men (refuse engineers) make a good living. But considering the crap they deal with daily, they earn it.
Draugnar (0 DX)
04 Feb 13 UTC
And Oct - I used that term facetiously because of the way it has been coopted for housewives (domestic engineers), janitors (sanitation engineers), and others. Pretty soon teachers will be societal engineers or some such chit.

If you want to make serious money, get a trade like Electrician, Plumber, or HVAC. They fucking rake in the money after their apprenticeship.
Draugnar (0 DX)
04 Feb 13 UTC
Electricians. Yes, electricians. My neighbor owns his own electrical business (he is the electrician and has a few coops form the local trade school help run cable and his wife does the accounting) and he rakes it in. He is good to the neighbors though, and only charges them for materials (no mark up) and his coop labor costs provided we return the favor in our businesses. :-)

@ Draug

I think you'll find 17-20k pounds is more akin to 27-31k US. Pounds are worth more than dollars, British pints are bigger than US pints. Easy rule of thumb "British is best" ;)
Octavious (2701 D)
04 Feb 13 UTC
Also... how the hell can you have huge variation in salaries like that without massive labour disputes?!? I can sort of understand a bit of extra money for workers in Alaska and places with significantly higher costs of living, but the scale of the variation seems insane.

Draugnar (0 DX)
04 Feb 13 UTC
@Oct - The scale of cost of living and median incomes varies from state to state. Indiana, where bo_sox lives, for instance, has a median house price of about 25-130k. Ohio is significantly higher. Kentuckies is lower overall (although regionally, northern Kentucky is higher than most fo the rest of Kentucky). Remember, the contiguous 48 US states is damn near as big as the entirity of Europe ad has a lot more diversity in cost of living, education levels, etc. Each state is more akin to a European country.

"has a median house price of about 25-130k" - it's getting silly :) Also, the diversity difference you claim is not quite true… In the 27 (not 50?) states that make up Europe, you have average income levels between 75k to 350 € ( times 1.3 to get $) a year, and a population of roughly 540m people (which is closer to the double of 300m than nearly as big)… It is nice to be seen from the outside as one common place, though - it give hope for the future it may once become truth ;) Or as a friend of mine once said: Moving from Berlin to Paris is the same as moving Tokyo to Osaka (though I might have put the analogy inversely).

Draugnar (0 DX)
04 Feb 13 UTC
I meant 125-130k by the way. :-)
X3n0n (216 D)
04 Feb 13 UTC
it's still not a real median, but I'll take it as a viable approximation :) missing information includes: how big a house you'll get for this (where I live the equivalent corresponds to a 2 room flat with balcony in a medium ranked neighbourhood).
125-130K is a nice down payment on a house in San Francisco. You'll still probably need to pay PMI (median $789K asking).
Draugnar (0 DX)
04 Feb 13 UTC
X3n0n - I said in Indiana. And it doesn't matter the size. Median is middle aka typical. So the typical home bought in Indiana costs a little over 125k. The typical home.in Cali is closer to 800k. Ohio is around 200k.

What you get for 200k depends on the part of town. Where I live it is a 2 story 4 bedroom around 40 years old on half an acre or so. Want new and they start around 275k and are smaller lots.
X3n0n (216 D)
04 Feb 13 UTC
Thx, Draugnar - I pretty much know what the median is, but to make sense of it, I'd like to know what the typical house is. Where I live, typical would be considered a 4 room flat with balcony, 40 years old, price 600k, but older or bigger climbs the log-ladder (guess that is the difference between the old and new continent). If I were to buy your house here, it'd get me up to 1.3 or 1.4 easily.
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Feb 13 UTC
Not likely. My house is a 3 bedroom brick ranch with partially finished basement and add on family room - 53 years old on just under 2/3rds of an acre. Current value just over 100k but I bought it off foreclosure for 45k. Had to do lots of work (another 50k in repairs) to get it livable.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))

"3 months and counting..."

You're welcome.
X3n0n (216 D)
05 Feb 13 UTC
sounds great, draugnar! and you are right, a ranch you wouldn't find here :)
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Feb 13 UTC
To clarify, a ranch is a one story house. I jist meant the house I previously described was different amd more expensive than what I live in (although I love my old brick ranch and my big lot full of pear and apple trees).
