Congressional Research Service Report: Wealth Doesn't Trickle Down!
You can download the CRS report from this Huffington Post article. Damn I wish TC were here. I have never missed him so badly. Also krellin, who hasn't been spouting racial slurs ever since I rewrote "Hey Mickey" for him. But hey, the rest of you Reaganomics types, feel free to criticize the report and turn a blind eye to its findings! (link inside)

Step 1 for GOP image reform: drug legalization
N.B.: This is not intended to be a discussion on the merits or demerits of drug legalization. I'm approaching the issue strictly from an electoral standpoint, that is, would this change be a good or bad move for the GOP politically.

International Reaction to the US Presidential Election?
CNN's reports characterized the UK response in one word--"WHEW!"
Accurate?
What do our WebDip friends Across the Pond think?
(Do you even CARE, actually, is this as big a deal internationally as some believe it to be, or is that all false American-fueled sentiment?)

For those that say tl;dr, the Cliffnotes:

Old America = linear, mostly White, Western, homologous, mostly Protestant, and an assimilating melting pot

New America = non-linear, thoroughly diverse and multi-cultural, Western but with increasing numbers of Easterners and with more variety of Western thought, all over the map in terms of religion or lack thereof, and rather than an assimilating melting pot, it's a coalition of recognition, that is, a recognition of how diverse it is and thus making for a coalition that does not assimilate into one via a melting pot, but rather is more like a mosaic, with separate and distinct sects noticeable while still brought together for part of a greater recognizable whole.

technology vs the anti-technologist ey?

good rant by the way, a good way to view the wonderful tool called the internet. It's just a shame so many of us simply use it for porn.

But back to topic, I am happy that Obama won, I'm observing from Australia - and have read in the newspapers that Washington (state) legalised marijuana for sale up to 28g. Is this true?

Obi, one reason it was such a big deal to get a car then, is that MOST people did not use credit to buy that item, they paid cash, even for new ones.

Now, we can go in with no $$ down, and grab a brand new car. There is no accomplishment involved in that process, so there is not such a big deal about it now.

I am not sure I like the word Coalition, as they never last thru time......If that is the word you want to use, then let me ask, will this one last thru time?

I was on yahoo last night, reading some articles then reading the comments after.

One of them struck me as really really profound. It said "Please thumbs up me if you think a new civil war is coming" sounds rather boring, except for the fact this simple, idiotic comment got over 3000 thumbs up and.....22 thumbs down. SO regardless of which side people see this America from, it seems that they are all agreeing on SOMETHING, just wish it was something a little more...cheerful

Again Kaner, you dont live here. Dont be happy obama won, dont be happy if Romney won, it will be business as usual here, and the little guy is going to take it up the chute. The only time we are not taking it up the chute is when they need our vote, then it is back to the daily ass grinding they deliver.

*International Reaction to the US Presidential Election?*

If you don't give a shit about international opinion, then why contribute to the thread?
Stressedlines (1559 D)

Obi also left out some other things in his "new' and "old' comparison. First, yes, some things are better, but others are MUCH worse.

1) We had less than 6% of the population on any type of government assistance when Drau was born (someone can double check that, as I used a Wiki Source) Now....I am not sure exactly, but I know its over 40% that have some type of government assitance (not all in welfare of course)

2) debt...puke It is suffocating us. National debt, but MORE importantly, personal debt.

3) Lack of parental figures in homes as generally both parents must work to make ends meet, where in the past only 1 (usually the father) was needed. People were 100% more fiscally responsible back then.

4) Pride in ones WORK. This has also gone out the fucking window. Sure, not everywhere, but people worry more about 'finishing' than doing it right

5) Education...vomit. I dont even need to go into THIS one.

There is so many more, but I will just leave it thjere. And, of all the above none are getting better, all are worse, with no future of turning around.

So, lets not think New America is some fucking Utopia any more than Old America was, okay? Its a fucking nightmare right now in many ways. In some, yes, it is better

I did not start this thread, and just so you know, this thread has evolved/changed since the original post, as all threads do.

"Again Kaner, you dont live here. Dont be happy obama won, dont be happy if Romney won,"

And why not? As far as I can see you guys in the US have just elected the most sane out of the 2 candidates. Sure it doesn't matter who you vote for - you always end up with a government, but the thread was about international opinion, not domestic opinion.

If you can't keep to the topic - or at least pay lip service to the topic the thread is about then you should make a new thread, one perhaps that starts with: Domestic Reaction to the US Presidential Election?

And I'd be quite interested to read what people post in this, and quite happily stay out of any discussion about your domestic policies because I don't live in your country.

But the fact is, America (US) influences the rest of the world in many fundamental matters. So like it or not, we pay attention to who you happen to vote in to be your president. And I for one am happy that you chose to elect Obama over the other muppet.
Ursa (1617 D)

I think most West-European countries prefer Obama over any right wing candidate. I believe there was an international survey, which I can't find right now, which indicated that 'the world' was mostly pro Obama (only Pakistan got a separate category for hating both candidates).

Most western European countries are more 'left' than Obama wants to be. Universal healthcare and such are pretty normal here. What's more, the EU itself is left-wing liberal-ish, with right wing governments or movements causing stirs across the continent. As such, we Europeans are very esstranged of the Republican adherents, esspecially the more religious kind. Even for me as a Christian it's a strange and even fascinating world.

"But back to topic, I am happy that Obama won, I'm observing from Australia - and have read in the newspapers that Washington (state) legalised marijuana for sale up to 28g. Is this true?"
yes, however Obama cracked down on drugs in New Mexico last year (a state that legalized the sale in the 90s), so it doesn't necessarily mean its legal because the federal government can still enforce the drug war in any state.

Kaner, then jumpon Obi fornot staying on topic, and dont single me out.

Also, your previous post only said where you were located, nothing about your 'American born wife" Sorry, We cant read minds in America like you Aussies can. I went with the facts you gave me (an Aussie) so forgive me for trying to enlighten you a little as you were a little cheap in giving out your entire background.

So, if you want to bash me for not staying on topic, please, dont be a shitstain, and go find everyone else in this thread who did not 'stay on your holy topic' that you have managed to sleect me out for the only abuse.

You jumped on me first. I was only posting in regards to the what my opinion is of the result of the election.

I don't think I was *bashing you, only that you responded (in my mind) negatively to me after my neutral post which was on-topic.

Regarding the marijuana law (I don't smoke the stuff, but the wifies from Oregon and likes to puff now and then) will this become a problem in the greater scheme of things? as I understand it choof is illegal under federal law, but here's this newspaper saying that this state in the US has legalised it.

How does this work?

Kaner, i was actually attempting to inform how this is not really that great, since you were not American (the only fact you ever established) I dont see where I 'jumped on you' at all, but you certainly did on me with the "my wife is an American..." and it went from there.

Everything in that post was factual, including the part where I said "you dont live here"

The biggest news for marijuana users is from Isreal. Some scientists there have managed to create a strain that has many of the medical benefits, but none of the high. In short, the excuse of smoking for medical purposes when really you just like the stuff could well be about to vanish.

http://www.economist.com/node/21552609
Its not suppose to work. If your in a state that has it legal, don't start smoking because you can still be arrested for breaking a federal law.

And the irony of latinos and pot heads voting for Obama in mass numbers when Obama has ordered my deportations and cracked down on marijuana use more then any other president in history just baffles me.

I was never big on medicinal marijuana, mainly because all the pot heads on facebook now are convinced that marijuana is good for you, when its not.

Hey I'm sticking up for the white right-wing bigots. You can be intelligent and bigoted.
The reason why Romney is an idiot is because he was stoopid enough to believe that the US public would fall for that hoary old chestnut, give the richest people more money in tax cuts and you'll all be better off, I think that most people have heard that joke before, it's never as funny the 2nd time around :-)
NigeeBaby (100 D(G))

No matter how racists Americans think they are and would like to be in Pakistan they shoot schoolgirls in the head who support education, they assassinate people who support free speech, they blow up political leaders, they kill fellow Muslims because they are the wrong Muslims ....... no point trying to have a proper discussion about democratic systems and economic policies with these people, they are beyond bigotry, they are psychopathic 'religious' murderers.

"I am not sure I like the word Coalition, as they never last thru time......If that is the word you want to use, then let me ask, will this one last thru time?"

No.
It won't.
And recognizing and accepting that is the beauty of it.

After all, it wasn't a philosopher or writer, just a guy waxing on about baseball who said it best:

"America's rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again...but BASEBALL has marked the times."

Forgetting that last baseball bit there, that's as accurate a quick assessment of America, I think, as any--

Old, White Protestant Male America is being erased, and New, Coalition-Built America is sprouting up in its place...

And, just as Old America was once "new," so too will this New America someday become "old"...

And then IT will crumble and implode in on itself the way Romney's Old America and electorate did this election...and something NEW will take its place.

That's just the way the country works.
I'm not going to pretend that this Coalition of Diversity will last forever--it won't.
Moreover, it can't, change is necessary for the growth of a nation, status quos are static.
As such, New America is only useful so long as it's new; once it's old, it's time to start again.

I am not bothered by the idea of the mutability of political institutions--I am INSPIRED by it.

The country stays ever the same, has a lasting party, is the country that resembles Oceania.

Americas New and Old will come and go, but AMERICA over all, THAT will last (at least so far as any nation does.)
orathaic (1009 D(B))
09 Nov 12 UTC
Yes, me and all my liberal pro-woman, pro-freedom friends are happy when we see a very powerful nation which influences the rest of the world reject the great of two evils.

Next time try rejecting both candidates.

I'm sorry, but this thread is mostly for the mods or admins or gamemasters.
