Uncertified software installed in voting machines in 39 Ohio counties
Ohio 2012 may be a repeat of Georgia 2002 and Ohio 2004.

Remember Remember
The racist but fun-filled holiday that Americans unfortunately dropped in exchange for "religious tolerance."
Guy Faulkes Day/ Pope Night was an occasion for organized annual rioting every year in America. It was especially active in Boston where the North siders and the South siders met in the middle of town and beat the piss out of each other until one side one and looted the other side. The night ended with colonial Americans reminding each other, that despite all their petty local squabbles, the Pope was an ass hole.

If only we could come together like that today.

This concludes your historical moment with SantaClausowitz.

You know, I love the movie V for Vendetta, and I've been meaning to read the actual comic books. But this 'holiday' pisses me off like no other. It's pretty much the epitome of mindless teenager bandwagoning. I even have a full V outfit from Halloween, but I'm not wearing it tomorrow, because half the comments I got from wearing it on Halloween could be summarized as "LOLZ V FOR VENDETTA REMEMBER TEH FIVETH GUY FAWKS!!!11!" and it's usually coming from people that would be absolutely horrified if someone did what V did in real life.
Not to mention it bastardizes the history of the day and the historical event
Guido Fawkes: the last man to enter Parliament with honest intentions.

Quite correct to put in the inverted commas, one wouldn't want to resst on these laurels I am sure:

Are Papists a race too, now?

I'm off to the Ottery tar barrels tonight. Bonfire night is one of the best holidays of the year!
Invictus (240 D)

Using the word racism for anything nasty drives me nuts. Catholics are not a race. Ugh. And I bet the holiday was actually abandoned because, after independence, Americans saw no need to celebrate the failure of an assassination attempt on the king.
Soft spot? That I don't feel that people should be discriminated against and beaten for their beliefs. Guilty as charged.

And to full-of-shit, your Anti-American crusade continues I see, but as usual, your contrarian objection does not dispute my point, just maked another point that everyone knows, that America was/is intolerant.

It doesn't change the fact that Americans jettisoned an anti-catholic English tradition that was, for Protestants, a jolly good time.

"Are Papists a race too, now?"

Since there is no such thing as race, anyone and anything can be a race. But if you prefer "prejudice" do as you will

I myself have earned the title racist because I believe that it's necessary for the youngest Dutch children that their nannies speak their native language. Knowing who on this site have accused me of this, I consider the brandmark a badge of honor.
Invictus (240 D)

There is no scientific basis for race, you're right. Sorting people by skin color is as relevant as sorting them by eye or nipple color. But the English word would not apply to Catholics in any way whatsoever. It's wildly un-idiomatic to do so and makes my skin crawl.
"And I bet the holiday was actually abandoned because, after independence, Americans saw no need to celebrate the failure of an assassination attempt on the king. "

The holiday was an anti- Catholic holiday and was actually used against the king in the leadup to the revolution. George Washington, as commander in chief termed the holiday a disgrace, especially when Americans were trying to find French and Quebecois allies in the revolution. So the pope night celebrations ceased in the name of religious toleration. Toleration to get guns and ammo, but toleration nonetheless.

Even your political allies have 'branded' you a xenophobe. But I see the Dutch martyr complex is alive & well.
Alright, whatever, prejudice. Its so relevant.

"That I don't feel that people should be discriminated against and beaten for their beliefs."

Even if those 'beliefs' are the Gospel of John?
um, yes.

I can read Wikipedia too, SantaClausowitz. But for a holiday with such a long tradition to die out I bet more was going on than one disapproving letter from George Washington.
Nor do I know why this is an issue.

I don't think communists should be beaten either for the record.
Octavious (2701 D)

The flaming tar barrels at Ottery is a race, and a damned good one :)
Invictus (240 D)

Using the word racism incorrectly is relevant. It's like calling a croissant a muffin.
"I can read Wikipedia too, SantaClausowitz. But for a holiday with such a long tradition to die out I bet more was going on than one disapproving letter from George Washington. "

I read Gary Nash's book, perhaps the wikipedia author also read it. Did you? If you did you would know that Nash believes the squashing of the riots was an attempt to quell counter revolutions and institute order among the lesser sort. There's your other motive. I somewhat agree.
"Using the word racism incorrectly is relevant. It's like calling a croissant a muffin."

Which is also irrelevant.

I think men with a Van Dyke beard deserve a good clobbering every now and then. That said, I don't need allies, my political opinions float freely and independently over the forum to liberate the members' minds. That said, I retail the thread and go away:

The Redskins Rule--RGIII vs. Cam Newton for the Presidency!
17 out of the last 18 elections it's been the case that if the Redskins win their last game before the election, the incumbent president wins; if they lose, the challenger wins.
SO! Months of campaigning and billions of dollars comes down to RGIII and the Redskins on Sunday...vs. the 1-6 Panthers and a slumping Cam Newton. ...Sorry, Romneyites...HAIL TO THE REDSKINS, HAIL VICTORY... ;)
