How old is Ankara Crescent?
Anyone know if Mornington Crescent is the source of inspiration? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mornington_Crescent_%28game%29
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
04 Nov 12 UTC
OK really wtf is ankara crescent? I search and it just links back to webdip and vdip.
dubmdell (556 D)

Basically, players submit one order at a time (usually starting on the standard map then quickly moving off it; popular choices are the inclusion of Moscow south coast and Switzerland; my first order is always Edi-Mos) and then, after a few moves, there is a lot of arguing about the rules. Sometimes players will argue over which set of rules they're following, sometimes they'll argue over the rules themselves. There's occasionally commentary about the strategic value of moves other players have made. It's great fun and generally very silly.

Mornington Crescent seems to be exactly like this, and so I wonder if it serves as inspiration. Anyone know?

Ankara Crescent was inspired by Mornington Crescent, but has since been rather foully corrupted.

Awww... I thought this wonderful game was an original idea spawned by WebDip. Shame on you, dubmdell, for destroying my myths.
Maniac (189 D(B))
04 Nov 12 UTC
I am the creator of Ankara Crescent and whilst mornington crescent may have been presented prior on some obscure radio channel on some obscure island off some obscure continent, nevertheless their lawyers now accept it was my idea and have paid me royalties ever since they tried to sue me.
Zmaj (215 D(B))
04 Nov 12 UTC
So why haven't you already invited us to a face-to-face tournament on your private jet?
Pete U (293 D)
04 Nov 12 UTC
Because aforementioned radio show is only listened to by one little old lady in Llandovery (and her Highland Terrier), so the royalties are liable to be in the region of £1.72 per annum, before deductionds.

And anyway, Maniac is guilty of plagerism - the original rules came from the court of Henry VIII, and all he did was update the spelling
Jamiet99uk (873 D)

Ah, good old Mrs Trelease. She does write such lovely letters.
Maniac (189 D(B))
04 Nov 12 UTC
@pete U, as some of the places visited didn't exist at the time of Henry VIII, I think you are being a bit disingenuous.

@jamie - mrs trelease is really mrs maniac.

@zmaj - the top 2000 players did get an invite to play face-to-face on my private jet, sorry you missed out by ten thousand or so places.

Actually, that was a great game on Maniac's new 747-8I fresh off the factory floor. Boeing let him get one before Lufthansa got their's. That was one sweet ride.
Pete U (293 D)
04 Nov 12 UTC
@Maniac. Disingenuous? Me?? In an Ankara Crescent thread???

Anyway, you KNOW there are non-existent places in the game. No one really thinks Dollis Hill or Swiss Cottage are real places, do they?
damian (675 D)
04 Nov 12 UTC
"my first order is always Edi-Mos"

A good option, but I've always preferred the userID=6710 variant. Where you order Edi Birsan to Moscow. I find it improve the quality of the game dramatically.
Draugnar (0 DX)
04 Nov 12 UTC
My orders always include "Edi Birsan to Switzerland". Once Edi controls Switzerland, we are all in trouble.
Alright what crazy set of rules are you using?
Moscow is covered in snow and therefore impassable in the winter
Pete U (293 D)
04 Nov 12 UTC
ILGS - it's not winter yet. It's Autumn. WInter rules don't kick in until Dec 1st, as codified by Maniac.

Please keep up

Those damned Dollis Hill loops...
omnomnom (177 D)
05 Nov 12 UTC
Are we playing, then? English Channel.
dubmdell (556 D)
05 Nov 12 UTC
Edi Birsan cannot control Switzerland as he is no longer an active user (per the Ankara Crescent Convention of 1914 ruling, section 12, note b: "A movement-pun based on a player's name may only be used if the player is still active. An inactive player nor any puns on the inactive player's name may not control Switzerland.").

omnomnom, I will take your English Channel and raise you a Nile River.
omnomnom (177 D)

I see your Nile River and abscond to Pyongyang.
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))
05 Nov 12 UTC
I don't think your abscontion is valid. The most recent revison of the abscontion rules (the 2004 Kuala Lumpur Assemblage) dictates that one cannot abscond with a river to any space located north of an adjacent space relative to Botswana up to and not including the Panama Canal Zone.

@2WL - You are the first true Ankara Rule Nazi I've ever seen!

Godwin's Law for the win

And I move from Godwin's Nazi Germany to Ankara Crescent for the win.

And I'm the last one to post so far so... Winning!
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))
05 Nov 12 UTC
I believe a rider was tacked onto the most recent Holocaust Denier bill that stipulated that players could not invoke Godwin's Law in games of AC if the game took place outside of Iran. I could be mistaken, but we may need video review in this case.
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Nov 12 UTC
So, riule Nazi, what is the penalty for invoking Godwin's Law?
omnomnom (177 D)
05 Nov 12 UTC
The invocation of Godwin's Law allows, according to Section 6, regulation 731 of the 1289 rules for two moves to be made by relevant players. I move to Iran to prevent the invocation of Godwin's Law from preventing me moving to Djibouti.
dubmdell (556 D)
05 Nov 12 UTC
The 1289 rules were written only in German and all copies were burned in 1941. Nice try to invoke them, but I learned that trick last game when someone took me for a ride. Oh the fool I was! but not again. You're not doing squat with Djibouti.

Instead, Iran to Ethiopia.
omnomnom (177 D)
05 Nov 12 UTC
Hah! You've fallen right into my trap! The Ethiopians, under my careful guidance from my secret base in Iran, attack and drive you all the way out to the ruins Xochicalco, deep in the heart of Central America. In the interim, I move to Laos via Atlantean land-bridge.
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))
05 Nov 12 UTC
The land bridge is only available in the Pangaean variant, which was outlawed in 1896 following the Confederation of the Papal States and Djibouti.

F Southern Rhodesia moves to the Aral Sea with support from the RAF.
omnomnom (177 D)
05 Nov 12 UTC
Oh, so we're NOT playing with the Pangaean variant? This changes everything...
Iran moves to India...
Maniac (189 D(B))

The Redskins Rule--RGIII vs. Cam Newton for the Presidency!
17 out of the last 18 elections it's been the case that if the Redskins win their last game before the election, the incumbent president wins; if they lose, the challenger wins.
SO! Months of campaigning and billions of dollars comes down to RGIII and the Redskins on Sunday...vs. the 1-6 Panthers and a slumping Cam Newton. ...Sorry, Romneyites...HAIL TO THE REDSKINS, HAIL VICTORY... ;)
