Look, I know that there are many factors that contribute to these things, but consider the achievements of the Europeans (which, as I know, is comprised of many different ethnic groups), and those of most other cultures. I don't look at individuals as being inferior, so much as their culture and how they manage to represent it. If a black man robs a bank, I will not be biased against him, but if a vast majority of bank robberies were committed by black people, I would certainly develop some level of distaste for black people, even if only on a subconscious level. But since we live in a world where a sense of cultural guidance is being deteriorated and neglected, I have little opportunity to develop these slight biases. My only option, therefore, is to turn to history. Historically, who has dominated the world? Historically, who has produced the most notable cultural works, scientific achievements, and lasting monuments? How many great civilizations can I name from each continent?

When I finish reading 'Guns, Germs, and Steel,' I'll give you a more straightforward answer.

You clearly haven't started reading GGS, because not 30 pages in Jared Diamond completely and utterly shits on everything you just said with such to-the-point academic brilliance that I would be surprised if you could give a halfway respectable response to it.

Normally, I chalk KA's nonsense up to religion and his W Virginia heritage. This time, he's obviously coming from under the bridge.

Define smartest. IQ? IQ tests are easy to study for by taking practice test. And I doubt the smartest person her necessarily even knows there IQ. And smart on what topic? I doubt there is a such thing as an absolute smartest person. But the fact is we have PhDs and PhD candidates here along withvsome brilliant scientists and engineers on this site so for a high school kid to jump on this site and declare he isbthe smartest person here is beyond mere hubris.

Also, Guns, Germs, and Steel has a very mixed reputation in the scholarly community; admittedly it's not my field, but I can't think of any real academics who take it terribly seriously. I haven't read it myself, although I'd like to, but it has a reputation (that seems accurate from what I have seen) for reducing human history down to geographical determinism.

indicates a very, very, very, very, very, very, very shallow knowledge of history. For most of human civilization, brownish people in north Africa and the Middle East produced the most notably cultural works, scientific accomplishments, and lasting monuments (including inventing civilization). Between the fall of the Persian Empire in the 300s BC and the 1400s AD, nobody was clearly ahead. Since around 1500, Europeans (and European colonies) have been mostly ahead. This will almost certainly change, like everything else.

Isn't racism about making distinctions between - erm - races? (inteded as the failed attempt to define more races within the - one - human race).

Yes, good point about China. An intelligent observer in 1500 would have assumed the future would have belonged to the Chinese (then the dominant culture and empire) or the Ottomans (the most dynamic empire in the world). Europeans were just fortunate to be at a political, economic, and cultural point that made them able to take advantage of the opportunities to become the dominant world powers.
