Non-live "Live" gunboat game...
I am looking for a few players to play a non-live gunboat as if it were live. The honor system rules follow.

email reminders
Email reminders of deadlines would be good. I just started a game on here for the first time in 3 years and missed the deadline for the first move.

Not an app necessarily... but in a previous thread we had talked of a mobile site. One that has the ability tomove areas you're not using at the moment out of the way.

Visually simple maybe but not so programatically.
LegatusMentiri (100 D)

I've not found that to be difficult to program in my other sites. Just run a script that pulls browser width, I'd it's less than X, use mobile.css instead of mainline.css. replace the script files in a similar way to allow for div closures by button push and you're basically done.

I meant the email from before you post. You know, this whole thread is about notifications. Like turn processing, an email processor would.have to run on a regular basis tobsee which notifications it needed to send. Not difficult but not as easy as a lay person may think.
Draugnar (0 DX)

As far as mobile sites, there is actually part of the request that tells you the browser and version and most sites redirect to an "m." version that is mobile optimized when the conditions are right.
LegatusMentiri (100 D)

@Draugnar - I agree with you about the email notifications. It's not quite as easy as they might think. A constantly reoccurring process in the background which eats up resources if run too often but becomes worthless if not run often enough.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

Why would it be a separate process? When you send a PM, it can check if the recipient has email notification turned on and if so, send an email. When a phase changes and the notification is created, same deal. When an in-game message is sent, same deal. The only email notification that doesn't fit is the 30 minute pre-notification and from what I've seen I don't think that would be too tricky to manage. There is a part where, if I remember correctly, the game master looks to see if anything needs to be done with a particular game.

Add in the fact that webdip already sends emails, required for registering, and adding this code really shouldn't be too complicated. Just need to add the flags to the user table and the user configuration.
Draugnar (0 DX)
09 Oct 12 UTC
Then do it Alderian. But remember to default to false and provide a whole array of flags that cam be turned off and on and that live games shouldn't send any emails except.the soon to start warning and also remember that once you do people.will want other notifications like 30 million.utes until the turn runs type warnings... Do you do this for a living? Think about all the.possible things people.will want for this email. The granularity and the advanced warnings they will want and be sure to code for all of them.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

Programming? Yes. And I know enough not to try and give everyone everything they want. At least not in my business. You evaluate what they ask for, get to the bottom of what they really want, which can be quite different, then determine a reasonable set of best practices and give them that.
Draugnar (0 DX)

But this isn't a business web site. It is a demanding public website. Realistically thogu, we could evaluate the options they would want, decide on a fixed advance notice system, and.implement it. Seeing as you are the more familiar of the code, I bow to yoir judgement as to ease or difficulty.

I think it's unnecesary to have email reminders of moves, and I already get enough emails as it is without needing extra, maybe an email at the start of a game to alert the players would be useful, but i do not think it's a "must have"
There is also the issue of using Server capacity effectively
I also think it's more "realistic" to have players who do not return messages, miss orders or do other daffy things.
Traditional Diplomacy "mirrors" Europe between 1870 & 1914, so why expect all nations to be competently run ? Why expect all messages to reach their destination promptly ?
I suggest "purists" go play against computer programmes
I like the anarchic nature of human behaviour in these games -- it creates opportunity, and it provides alternative justifications for the "gentle betrayal" ie "I never got your message and didn't think you wanted that sc " or "that's the second time you missed orders and I had to act in the best interests of my country "
I can feel some sympathy for the mighty Mintz, but all I can offer him is, what happened was like Dianna Ross's left leg -- it's not right & it's not fair, but persevere and you may find paradise close by-- so join another game & have another crack at the caper
I really do hope Mintz wasn't driven away permanently...
I'm with Abge- I connect on the iPhone more than anything else. Works fine; why dick with it?

@MjrMitch - Actually this mirrors a boardgame from the 60s in which all communicatoon was face to face and people may have misordered but rarely.missed orders. So the purists (like me) woild.prefer opponents who converse. I don't care if there orders are perfect, but that they submot them and they communicate. You know, like in the boardgame.

The Great Debate II: Thucy, dub, 2WL,dD_ShockTrooper vs.My Fellow Krellinists?
It seems as if we have a new wave of vocal and talented akrellinist thinkers, who certainly seem as willing as I to type on the matter, albeit from the other end--so, care to debate, say, 2-4 akrellinists vs. the same # of Krellinists, on a thread w/ a neutral moderator, we each give an opening statement in succession (say, 500-1000 words or less), one rebuttal per person, and then open it up for questions, side with the most +1s for their comments "wins?"
