Taking over and loosing points instantly
I think it is unfair when someone takes over in a game and has to lay in a bet in an unfair situation. For example: it is Autumn diplomacy and you take over a country with 6 SC's, while 2 out of 6 are already occupied and there is not a chance in regaining them. So when the move ends you lose 2 SC's instantly and valuable points. Meaning that the system should consider this possible loss of points. Before you even start you are punished.

SC in Tuscany
The SC in Rome is fairly poor for building fleets compared to the one in Naples. However, of the SC was in Tuscany, Italy's ability to attack France would increase considerable. Conversely, it would also make it easier for France to attack Italy. All in all, do you think SC Tuscany would make Italy stronger or weaker?

Drawing is the last refuge of the desperate
I've seen a lot of people, when their end is getting near, suddenly throw out a vote for a draw. I'm curious how people read this: a last-ditch attempt to escape defeat or simply using one more tool in the arsenal?

Cancelling, pausing/unpausing, and cheat accusation policies
Details below.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
08 Aug 12 UTC
It has taken us a while, but here are our current policies on canceling games, pausing/unpausing games, and cheat accusations/repercussions. These are the policies that we are considering posting on the “Help” page.

Canceling games
We will consider canceling games when there are 2 or more multis in the same game and they had a considerable effect on the game as a whole. We will encourage the remaining players to cancel on their own. If they do not, we will ask for an explanation. We will determine if the explanation is warranted and either leave it alone or force cancel with an explanation.

Pausing/Unpausing
The players should take care of this themselves as much as they can. If they have agreed to pause, then they should have agreed when to unpause. If the unpause doesn't happen by said date, then they can email us and we will look into it.

Cheating Accusations/Repercussions
If you make cheating accusations in the forum, we will give you a stern warning and/or “small” point dock (10% of your total points or 20 to 100 D, whichever is smaller) for the first offense depending on the severity of the accusation and how well-acquainted you are with the site. For the second offense, we will levy a heavier fine, which will be at least 10% of your total points, and we will consider more serious actions depending on the specifics of the offense.

I hope this will help.

Could you please elaborate on Force Pausing.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
08 Aug 12 UTC
Force pausing is a trickier matter, and it does not come up as often as the ones above. I think there has to be rather extenuating circumstances such as a natural disaster or a sudden death in the family before we would consider force pausing. Part of the reason is that we would have to explain why we force paused a game instead of letting the players do it themselves. My own take on it is that I take into account whether or not the player could reasonably ask the others to pause the game and to agree to resume at a specific date. If it is not reasonable or probable, then I would consider pausing the game and explain the situation to the others in global press.

So, I think force pausing would be done on a case by case basis.
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 Aug 12 UTC
Yes, please do. If the mods are going to force pause when it was agreed to in advance, then I think I will start looking to play more over at VDip. While pause and unpause are not to be used as diplomatic tools, it has long been established that people can have a "never pause" policy and that this is acceptable. I have a "never pause" policy on pause rrequests longer than one week. So long as the game wasn't set up with a predetermined pause or a pause policy (like the leagues), I don't see where it is any of the mods business to force a pause. That's why we have sitter capabuilities.
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 Aug 12 UTC
@Zultar - You have fair warning that if you *ever* do that to a game I am in, I will make a humongous stink on the forums and in you rPM to the point of possibly getting banned. Pausing is up to the players and if a player has a natural disaster, that results in an extended pause, then they should just be forcibly CDed in all their games so a replacement can be found and the phase extended an extra couple phases to give the players time to find the replacement. Force pausing a game indefinitely is total bullshit!

Yes Draug, we all know you'll take any excuse to throw a fit.
"We will determine if the explanation is warranted and either leave it alone or force cancel with an explanation."

"If the unpause doesn't happen by said date, then they can email us and we will look into it."

Neither of these are policies. You are stating a willingness to use judgment, which a policy is supposed to override.

This makes absolutely no sense.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
08 Aug 12 UTC
@Lando

Everything zultar said made perfect sense to me. The policy is to look into it.
So, prior to this there was no policy and mods were not expected to look into reasonable pause/unpause issues?

Further, why were some of my games just paused without my vote?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

The mods are clearly trying to do a better job informing the Peanut Gallery of mod policies. That doesn't mean they didn't exist before now.
The fact remains that these are not policies in any way shape or form.

"All he said is if you e-mail us, we might do something (we might not). So, you're liekly on your own. Good luck"
Alderian (2425 D(S))

@Lando, you seem to think that a "policy" is a guideline of how to handle a situation so that the person doing it doesn't have to use any judgement of their own. That is a rather narrow definition and I disagree with it. In some jobs that type of policy can be good where the person's judgement isn't trusted for various reasons. In this case I personally would much more trust a mod's judgement than blind faith in some sort of decision tree.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Re: I disagree with any forced pause with one exception. If a natural disaster has occured, then it is up to the players to vote pause. The exception I mentioned is if the players not affected by said disaster have voted for the pause and only the player who can't get on hasn't. then it is safe to assume they would pause if they could and a forced pause would be acceptable. But too many players have policies against pausing to ever force a pause unless all non-affected players have agreed to it. Instead, the player should be removed form the game and the phases extended to allow time to find a new one.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

Lando, compare:

"We will unpause"
to
"We will look into it"
to
"We will not unpause"

These are all statements of how we respond to a scenario. We are saying what we would do. Looking into it normally means talking to the players who aren't unpausing to see what is going on (e.g. if they've forgotten about the game) and try to get the unpause to happen as cleanly as possible.

policy - A proposed or adopted course or principle of action.

Take it for what you will, but I don't see a "we will consider forced pauses/unpauses/cancellation on a case by case basis" to be an actual policy. Now, the Cancellation as stated is a policy "If multis/metas have affected the game in a major way, we will cancel it..." But the pause thing isn't a policy at all.

However, it would be better if the code were just changed to allow voting for a pause for a specific period of time and then the system autounpausing at that time if it hadn't been manually unpaused before then. If I knew PHP, I'd talk to Kestas and look into that, but I'm a .Net and Java developer.

I had a chance to participate in the game with a player who was multi. unfortunetely he was banned shortly after the game was ended and I was one of the players who were defeated. In my opinion game affected by multi should be cancelled by law and all points returned to the players regardless of the result of the game. The game itself should be ignored in all statistics.
Fortress Door (1837 D)
08 Aug 12 UTC
but if there was no cheating going on in the game, and it did not effect the game outcome (ie, a multi plays as Turkey and England, both taken out early in the game) then it is still a legal game, and should be kept. I loooked at the your game, Wyludnaicz, and there was only one banned person in it.

Bump

This community service brought to you by the Banhammer. A mythical weapon of immense power forged by Hephaestus himself, the Banhammer is wielded by admin and moderators the webdip over. Loki brokered the deal with the crippled god to forge the hammer, slighting the trolls of his own mythological origins. Severely pissed, these trolls now lurk the forums posting cheating accusations, threatening DDOS attacks, and causing general mischief and discord in threads. The moderators and admin, knowing the god-like powers the Banhammer bestows upon them, stay far from the forums, especially Kestas the Creator, avoiding conflict when they can. But when the trolls gather in strength and number, the Banhammer is wielded once more. And again for users_ghost. And again for definitely_not_user. And a final time for zombi_user. The Banhammer. Since 2006. Trusted in the hands of Geofram, trusted in the hands of fortknox.
Which kind of assholes have policies to refuse others' pause requests?
Draugnar (0 DX)
09 Aug 12 UTC
Several of the top players on the site. My personal one only denies pauses for people who knew in advance they'd need the pause early in the game and didn't have the courtesy to bow out or at least let everyone know before the game started. Emergencies will always get the pause granted by me and long running games get later game pauses granted because, let's face it, these games can run for months and you don't know if you will be out early or end up playing through the end game now how long it will take to get to the end game. But don't ask me for a pause in spring 02 because you are headed off on a cruise. I won't give it and I will call you all kinds of names for being such a disrespectful asshole.
Seems like pot/kettle kind of thing to me.

Games are for fun, keep them fun and respect your opponents.

you are the only person to have a policy like this as far as I know.
Draugnar (0 DX)
09 Aug 12 UTC
Well then yodon't know many players as well as you think. I know several off the top of my head (but I don't name names) who have a "never pause" policy. At least mine is about keeping the games fun by keeping fucktards who join then immediately pause (killing the fun) out of my games.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
09 Aug 12 UTC
The "never pause" policy, of at least the one person I know that has such, is reportedly due to too many times having a game paused and then ruined due to players not coming back. For league games though he had to accept pauses as part of the league tournament rules, but there he knew there was a TD to get things moving again if necessary.
Draugnar (0 DX)
09 Aug 12 UTC
Exactly! If the game is preset with rules regarding pauses, then either a TD or a mod can get it going again if someone tries to hold it hostage.
