Taking over and loosing points instantly
I think it is unfair when someone takes over in a game and has to lay in a bet in an unfair situation. For example: it is Autumn diplomacy and you take over a country with 6 SC's, while 2 out of 6 are already occupied and there is not a chance in regaining them. So when the move ends you lose 2 SC's instantly and valuable points. Meaning that the system should consider this possible loss of points. Before you even start you are punished.

Curiosity
Massively awesome achievement. Unfortunately, it hasn't received the same popular news coverage as the LHC experiments but certainly worth celebrating.

Here is NASA's chief engineer talking about the mission:

Which is strange considering this is far more exciting and a lot easier to understand. I don't recall any news report about the HB that even came close to explaining it, and most didn't bother trying.

As a nation, we may have gotten to the point where an unmanned vehicle on Mars is a mere afterthought and no longer worthy of front page news. Obviously, it's quite unfortunate, especially as Curiosity will be active for several *years* on the surface of Mars. NASA should have timed its launch better to coincide with a weekend that didn't feature the men's 100m final :)

True. I wonder how precise their scheduling was. Considering NASA's poor public perception lately, it is odd that it would be scheduled for during the olympics (if, in fact, it was controlled with that amount of precision).
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

To me that suggests that NASA doesn't care about what kind of coverage they get as much as they care about what they accomplish in the mission, which is how it should be. If they go through the Olympics, then they can have a peaceful two weeks I guess.

Has anyone else gotten over the fact that we built a sky crane to land this thing yet? I certainly have not.

I still think it's pretty cool that we put the previous Mars rovers inside giant airbags and just shot them into the planet.

You know....we landed MEN on the MOON in, what, 1969 --- 43 years ago? With computers less powerful than your cell phone?

Get over it...cool...sure....massive achievement? Not hardly...

Krellin, try watching/reading a bit about the mission. I'd be shocked if you weren't at least a bit blown away with the complexity and scope.
krellin (80 DX)
07 Aug 12 UTC
Complex and scope...yes, amazing. They sent a robot to Mars and landed it....you know, kind of like they did in 1969 with people...only in 1969 they collected samples and came home with them....

I'm not saying it isn't really neeato!!! I'm saying that...big woop....relative to the advance of technology in society on the whole since 1969....this is a minor advancement from 1969. Seriously...

Launch windows for missions to other worlds are few and far between when compared to simple lunar shots. NASA really didn't have a choice in whent hey could make it happen. It was do it during the olympics or wait potentially months if not years to do it. Mars and Earth were in an optimal orbit solution to make it happen now with the greatest chance of success and least distance to travel.
Invictus (240 D)
07 Aug 12 UTC
krellin, that's spectacularly wrong. Mars, unlike the Moon, has a atmosphere that makes landing something big (and this thing is basically a car) extremely difficult. They had to come up with that whole system where they lower it down on a floating crane, which is likely the sort of technology a manned mission would use. So seeing that it works is a big, big deal.

And sending people to Mars will be entirely different from the Moon. There's the huge issue of how to get them back. I have a feeling that the dirty little secret is that the astronauts sent there will have to stay. They'll cloak it by saying that were establishing a colony and send more every few years, but men on Mars will likely have to stay on Mars. I hope I'm wrong, but it would probably be the most efficient way to go about it.

@krellin They sent people to Mars in 1969? Your an idiot! The moon is much closer (only 240,000 miles) and the moon orbits the earth with an perigee occuring once a month. Mars on the other hand is 34.6 million miles (25 times the distance) at it and Earth's orbital perihelion and that only occurs once every 2.1 years (780 days). So you are an idiot to even think of equating the two.

I've actually seen quite a bit of coverage. There was nothing up until it landed, but many news organizations went back and covered it retrospectively.

SC in Tuscany
The SC in Rome is fairly poor for building fleets compared to the one in Naples. However, of the SC was in Tuscany, Italy's ability to attack France would increase considerable. Conversely, it would also make it easier for France to attack Italy. All in all, do you think SC Tuscany would make Italy stronger or weaker?

Drawing is the last refuge of the desperate
I've seen a lot of people, when their end is getting near, suddenly throw out a vote for a draw. I'm curious how people read this: a last-ditch attempt to escape defeat or simply using one more tool in the arsenal?
