Urgent Pause Request

This game has 3 hours to go; Russia already missed last phase, and this will make the difference between draw/solo.

This Time On Philosohpy Weekly: What's The Point Of All This Nonsense?
The question everyone asks at one point or another..."Obi, what's the point of this bullshit thread you keep posting and these pedantic, poorly-punctuated posts?" ;) (O n an alliteration kick from my last set of papers.) ;)
But really, what's the point of philosophy? (Taken to mean "thinking about life" and whatever connotation it may carry for you.) And of life?
If there's a point to all this, a goal--what is it? And if not...well, why bother, brother? ;)

Anyone up for a live game tonight?
There seems less than usual enthusiasm for an evening live game so I was wondering if anyone hadn't been on the thread and wants to play?

What happens, if someone doesn't draw?
Hi,
a game gets to a point where nobody has the possibility to successfully attack any more territories. What happens, if someone doesn't draw the game? Will it run endless?

In-Game Computer Error
Game 59233.
Italy was to move Army Piedmont to Marseilles, supported by Fleet Lyon. Army Venice was to move to Piedmont. I double-checked my orders less than 3 hours before the turn progressed, and am absolutely confident that they reflected this precisely. Help?
Maniac (189 D(B))

Your orders say that GoL fleet support pie-mars; but pie is ordered to hold. If you think the system hasn't picked up your orders correctly than speak to the mods, but it is highly unusual for errors like this to be made.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 May 11 UTC
I bet I know what happened. Because you ordered an army to move that could move by land or by convoy, the system comes back and prompts with the by land or by convoy at the end. If you forgot to select this and save again, it reverted the order to a hold. I've had it happen to me and went "Doh!" and beat myself with a wet noodle for days for doing it.
jracademia (332 D)
23 May 11 UTC
@Maniac, I can guarantee that I ordered to move. I will start taking screenshots before orders, for safety's sake. How do I contact the mods?
@Draugnar, if you say so...There was only one infofield, though.
yebellz (729 D(G))
23 May 11 UTC
I think Draugnar's explanation is more likely.
Always double check your orders. Did they go from red to green after you saved? Close the browser/tab, then come back to the game screen to confirm that the orders were properly saved.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 May 11 UTC
Yes, there is one when you first select it. But when it returns from the AJAX call, the second will appear if (and only if) that option is available.
santosh (335 D)

I believe there was another thread on moves not reflecting orders. In short, moves not reflecting the orders stored onto the db before evaluation is literally impossible. If issues occur, they're only because the moves stored are not the moves intended. Typically, this is human error. It's easy to confuse territory names. It's likely that an AJAX call gets an http 500 because you clicked at a bad time for the server. This is a low probability even, but a possibility nonetheless. I think this is what happened in your case. You might have noticed the missing field, but that's probably harsh. Just bad luck, I think.
fortknox (2059 D)
23 May 11 UTC
I wish there was warnings when your support and your moves don't make sense... like you supporting pie-mars, but pie-mars isn't a move. It would warn you to say "warning: you are supporting a move that you do not have entered: GoL S pie-mars, but pie hold"). So you can still order it, but the system analyzes and determines that it is a possible mistake on your part...
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 May 11 UTC
But sometimes you are supporting ally or even enemy moves and those warnings could give away a stab or allow you to deduce what your enemy's actual moves are.
Katsarephat (100 D)
23 May 11 UTC
@fortknox: Of course that would be impossible for if the support is going towards a foreign unit, but it would be nice for your own units. If I ever get a chance I wouldn't mind looking into it, but I hardly ever have free time these days.
jracademia (332 D)
23 May 11 UTC
They went from red to green, yes. And I ordered them several hours before the turn ended. Each time I went to check my diplomatic messages, I checked my orders.
*Sigh*
If there's nothing the mods can do (because of overload or fairness), I'll have to live with it...Too bad it denies me a build that was time crucial >.<
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 May 11 UTC
There is nothing the mods can do because reqinding the game would totally alter the outcome and it is unfair to just implement your order on your word alone.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 May 11 UTC
rewinding, not reqinding
figlesquidge (2131 D)

Have to say, I'd guess you're wrong.
As others have said, I just can't think of anyway that your orders could corrupt and yet end up legitimate. If there was an error then you'd expect it to leave an impossible order, not a different wrong order.

Another possible cause for your issue (although I think Draug may well be right) is that the precise save command didn't get through. Make sure to check your orders after saving.
jracademia (332 D)
24 May 11 UTC
I'll buy that. After the explanations above, I probably just had tired eyes and screwed up vision.
Thanks for the help everybody! I'll be sure to triple-check orders now!

Hardest country to play in Diplomacy?
In Classic Diplomacy, I'd say Austria. You have to put trust into quite a few alliances or arrangements. In Wilson and Gunboat Diplomacy I think the hardest is Germany, because everybody wants a piece of you. I think Italy is pretty tough too, but can be fun if played right. Flip side, easiest country, France.

Sequels You Wish Would Happen
Simple enough--what sequels for existing or old movie and/or TV franchises do you wish you could see?

No cheating the Reaper--so as much as I'd love to see another Marx Borthers movie, that's out--but other than that...any adventures you wish your favorite movie heroes could still go on?

Mr. Sulu Takes On "Don't Say Gay" Bill: "It's OK To Be Takei!"
I had to psot this, as a Trek fan, and just because of the sheer hilarity...and because I back Takei on this.

Tennesse's proposed "Don't Say Gay" bill for classroom conduct is a joke, and a bigotted one at that--so Mr. Sulu has a backup plan... http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=dRkIWB3HIEs
