This Time On Philosohpy Weekly: What's The Point Of All This Nonsense?
The question everyone asks at one point or another..."Obi, what's the point of this bullshit thread you keep posting and these pedantic, poorly-punctuated posts?" ;) (O n an alliteration kick from my last set of papers.) ;)
But really, what's the point of philosophy? (Taken to mean "thinking about life" and whatever connotation it may carry for you.) And of life?
If there's a point to all this, a goal--what is it? And if not...well, why bother, brother? ;)

There seems less than usual enthusiasm for an evening live game so I was wondering if anyone hadn't been on the thread and wants to play?

What happens, if someone doesn't draw?
Hi,
a game gets to a point where nobody has the possibility to successfully attack any more territories. What happens, if someone doesn't draw the game? Will it run endless?

Hardest country to play in Diplomacy?
In Classic Diplomacy, I'd say Austria. You have to put trust into quite a few alliances or arrangements. In Wilson and Gunboat Diplomacy I think the hardest is Germany, because everybody wants a piece of you. I think Italy is pretty tough too, but can be fun if played right. Flip side, easiest country, France.

Sequels You Wish Would Happen
Simple enough--what sequels for existing or old movie and/or TV franchises do you wish you could see?

No cheating the Reaper--so as much as I'd love to see another Marx Borthers movie, that's out--but other than that...any adventures you wish your favorite movie heroes could still go on?

Realistically, I'd quite like another Ocean's film. As long as it isn't like Oceans twelve.

Or another Bourne film. There were more books, although I've never got round to reading any of them...

What about another Blackadder series set in the 80s, at like a merchant bank in Thatcher-tastic London? The company could be owned and run by Queenie, Percy could be an incompetent department head who reports to Blackadder, and Baldrick could be his even more incompetent assistant, with Blackadder constantly conflicting with Melchett over bonuses raises and promotions. You could even have appearances by other regulars like Flashheart (a womanizing coke fiend) and Bob/Kate (another employee who just really happens to like Annie Lennox). The series 4 character lineup might work also, with George instead of Percy, and Melchett as the boss with Darling as Blackadder's rival, but I just can't see Hugh Laurie as comedic anymore.

@Tru Ninja:

Really?

Indy 4 was a bad movie...but MORE Star Wars films are desirable?

The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones...I USED to LOVE Star Wars (and if you doubt that, check my name.) ;)

But those two just really, REALLY turned what I almost could consider at one point to be a modern-day myth, maybe America's answer to The Iliad and Odyssey and The Legend of king Arthur and the Roland Legend and Gilgamesh and all the other great legends most nations around the world enjoy...

Two films with horrible dialogue, non-sensical plots, acting ranging from good-but-underutilized (Ewan McGregor...at least they got my childhood hero Obi-War right for the msot part in those movies, I buy McGregor as Obi-Wan in a way I just can't quite seem to by Hayden Christensen, whiny and moaning and crying, as the precurssor to one of the Top 10 Cinematic Villains EASILY in Darth Vader) to good-but-why-are-they-in-this-movie (Samuel L. Johnson...he appears for maybe a bit over an hour or so total over the three films, and whereas SLJ is kickass as a raging loose cannon, the SW prequels make him about as raging as molasses) to GOD PLEASE GET THE HELL OFF THE SCREEN (pretty much everyone else) a TON of horrible CGI...

And then Jar Jar and the Anakin kiddie...my childhood died that day... ;)

#3 was OK, better than the first two--not saying much--and I thought at least I could say "Well, they really botched the legacy of the franchise, but at least the last film goes out on something of a high-note."

And then they made an animated movie for kids...

A movei I never saw and never will see. Ever.

Star Wars as I knew it is dead...sad, but true, so let's stop picking at it's poor corpse, and thank God I became a Trek fna and THEY had the right idea--spend five minutes with the kiddies, rather than a film and a half or so, and then onto the action and fun we're all here to see.

Was that just an incredibly nerdy post?

Yes. Yes it was.

But this is coming from a person who quotes Shakespeare and Nietzsche, loves Star Trek and baseball, brings his own stuff to make his own tea for class, and has the username of a fictional science fiction character...twice, to make it redundant.

What else did you expect but an incredibly-nerdy post? :p

@Hell - the books are nothing like the films (as always), and indeed most of them weren't written by Ludlum. Not sure where you'd take the overarching story in a new film either - yes I liked them and the action is brilliant, but surely its finished?

@Mafia - Not sure if you saw it, but they made a documentary a few years back where they talked about the making of all the series etc, and in it there was mention that they did consider doing one set in the 1960s, but given the way 4 finished they felt that was a good place to leave it.
Mafialligator (239 D)
23 May 11 UTC
figlesquidge, I had heard of that, with the 60's rock band. Personally I think the Blackadder character would work really well to shed light on the absurd excesses of the 80s and of corporate greed in general (think about it, in every other era Blackadder is deplorable, but in the 80s he'd fit right in). But yeah that is a good point, the ending of Blackadder 4 really is a lot more powerful if the character doesn't appear again, leaving aside the slight hiccough that was Blackadder Back & Forth.
Octavious (2701 D)

What about Blackadder set in an English seaside resort? Blackadder could be the frustrated owner of a small hotel/guesthouse. Baldrick could play an incompetent waiter. Melchett could be one of those guests that seem to live there permanently. Bob/Kate could be an underappreciated maid that keeps the place going, and Darling could be his partner who constantly argues with him...

If only there was a way of making an episode that had some Germans in it.....

nobody likes my forest gump idea? It could be really cool if they picked up with the timeline like the origonal did. From the 80's and the aids epidemics to the gulf war, 9/11, iraq, and afganistan. i loved the way they did it in the first. to this day my high school history teacher submits that forest gump is the best movie to get a sense of what it was like for the average person growing up during those events
I would say there are three top things I want to see.

Another Ocean's movie (Ocean's 11 was fantastic...12 and 13, eh)
Another Master and Commander Movie (they did an excellent job re-enacting life at sea)
And more Firefly episodes (that series ended far too soon)

@goldfinger +1 for Master and Commander and another +1 for more Firefly, although it could be difficult with the way Serenity ended not to mention Nathan Fillion and Adam Baldwin having moved onto other projects (Castle, and Chuck respectively). I would have included Summer Glau, but I don't think she's in anything now that Dollhouse, Terminator: SC Chronicles, and The Cape are cancelled.
You could just pretend that Serenity never happened. And I think Nathan Fillion might be trying to buy rights to the franchise so he can make more himself, but I'm not sure...
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 May 11 UTC
Well, I think Joss Whedon kinda owns those outright and no one can force him to sell, but more power to NF and the Browncoats if they can convince JW to sell them.

Other sequels I'd like to see... Farscape and Lexx.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 May 11 UTC
And why would I pretend Serenity never happened. No, it was a great movie. I mean, River Tam kicking Reaver ass! And I really think that squad of Union soldiers would have regretted trying to take her down. Let's just set the sequels as prequels to Serenity.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 May 11 UTC
They should also do a prequel spin-off of Babylon 5. Say, Bester's early days leading up to him becoming top PsyCop as it were. Or maybe the Earth-Minbari war.

@Draug

Serenity was a disaster. The entire plot revolved around non-canon events.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 May 11 UTC
Well, I discovered Firefly through Serenity, so you have to give it some credit for bringing in a new fan base. And what, exactly, was non-canon about it? I've been catching up on the original show via Netflix, but would like to know what the problems were.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

How River is rescued was completely change for no real reason, but, honestly that didn't bother me much.

My big problem is the relationship between Mal and Simon in the movie. By the end of the series, Simon had become a real part of the crew. I'm not sure how far you are in the series, so I won't spoil anything, but one several occasions, Mal made it very clear to the crew (and audience) that Simon and River where just as much of his crew as anyone else. So, when the movie came out and Mal was a huge dick to Simon and even said "you aren't on my crew" that really, really bothered me. It was completely unnecessary and, worse yet, that non-canon relationship drove the whole plot of the movie, which really made it hard to stomach.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 May 11 UTC
OK, I get that. And yeah, I have seen enough of the series (first round was hit and miss on TV which skipped episodes, but got through the series) to know that Simon did become a true member of the crew. He was the ship's physician as it were. So maybe we should consider Serenity as taking place early in the series, although that would make some of River's actions that I've seen in the series a bit out of place as well.

Dang it, now you are making it difficult for me to assimilate what is a great movie (if viewed independently of the series) with the series it is based upon. I wonder why Joss got things so out of whack there. He is normally better about keeping things consistent.

Mr. Sulu Takes On "Don't Say Gay" Bill: "It's OK To Be Takei!"
I had to psot this, as a Trek fan, and just because of the sheer hilarity...and because I back Takei on this.

Tennesse's proposed "Don't Say Gay" bill for classroom conduct is a joke, and a bigotted one at that--so Mr. Sulu has a backup plan... http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=dRkIWB3HIEs
