This Time On Philosohpy Weekly: What's The Point Of All This Nonsense?

The question everyone asks at one point or another..."Obi, what's the point of this bullshit thread you keep posting and these pedantic, poorly-punctuated posts?" ;) (O n an alliteration kick from my last set of papers.) ;)
But really, what's the point of philosophy? (Taken to mean "thinking about life" and whatever connotation it may carry for you.) And of life?
If there's a point to all this, a goal--what is it? And if not...well, why bother, brother? ;)

What happens, if someone doesn't draw?

Hi,
a game gets to a point where nobody has the possibility to successfully attack any more territories. What happens, if someone doesn't draw the game? Will it run endless?

I'd like to set up a game where the players are all anonymous and there is no in game messageing but everyone, in the game or not can discuss the game in the forum and advise players how to play their moves. Any takers?

So Is this like a SoW? where players play and advisors advise? Or a game where we only speak of the game in the forum (which would be like publice press) or a game where we only PM each other, where we could make up which countries we are, moves etc.

7 anonymous players play a gunboat game. They and anyone else who wants to contribute talk about the ongoing game in the forum without giving away their country (if they have one).

But wouldn't this just give rise to the following situation:

Player A (England): I believe that this game could look good for England and France if England moves XYZ France moves ABC.
Moves: England really moves XYZ, France believes Player A and plays ABC....this would rapidly become a globalpress game...

possibly - it depends on the lengths players goto to cover up their identities and if other (non-players) get involved

A game would have to be set up by a third party or everyone would know that the person who opened the thread was indeed a player.

Easy enough for someone to setup the game and then drop out before six of the seven players join.

And yes it could become global press, but with outsider's input as well.

I don't think it matters if players know who's in the game, as long as they don't know which country their playing

Good idea Alderian I'll set up a game and then drop out. Please do not inform anyone if you have signed up or not. I will participate in the debate about what players should do to try and keep a debate going, others who arn't playing should be encouraged to comment on the game as it progresses. As this in't normally allowed it could be fun.

good to see a game added, i think the link coudl have been in the opening :p

i'd like to see a way of turning diplomacy into more of a spectator sport (to raise money of course) but i don't know how... this is a small step! good luck.

I could take part on the game or just make comments on the thread like I did on SoW. This could be fun, as you can suggest orders even if you aren´t in the game or you can even pretend to be another country (not sure if this is allowed, Maniac?).

In-Game Computer Error

Game 59233.
Italy was to move Army Piedmont to Marseilles, supported by Fleet Lyon. Army Venice was to move to Piedmont. I double-checked my orders less than 3 hours before the turn progressed, and am absolutely confident that they reflected this precisely. Help?

Hardest country to play in Diplomacy?

In Classic Diplomacy, I'd say Austria. You have to put trust into quite a few alliances or arrangements. In Wilson and Gunboat Diplomacy I think the hardest is Germany, because everybody wants a piece of you. I think Italy is pretty tough too, but can be fun if played right. Flip side, easiest country, France.

Sequels You Wish Would Happen

Simple enough--what sequels for existing or old movie and/or TV franchises do you wish you could see?

No cheating the Reaper--so as much as I'd love to see another Marx Borthers movie, that's out--but other than that...any adventures you wish your favorite movie heroes could still go on?
