Live Game
I apologize, but I couldn't locate that large thread specifically for live games. Therefore, I'm asking here if within the half hour or so anyone is interested in a live WTA game. Thanks...

Need to drop out of the Masters tournament
Real life is an issue and I need to reduce my game load. I'm going to try and finish out the League, but I need to drop out of the masters. I'm currently getting my butt kicked in Round 4 because of a couple of NMRs.

Advise for new players.
I believe if the game of Diplomacy grew in popularity then the world would be a better place. Why don't we all just throw together some advise for new players so we can increase the love of Diplomacy.

@ obi: I know it’s maple’s cup of tea, but how about “overrun” for a derogatory nickname? :)) Might have to do something with those huge blocks of text you mentioned :))
(No offence, obviously :))
to win a battle, do you need two support move orders (to destroy an enemy unit) or one move & one support move order? & does the party moving hold more sway than the one carrying out support? tell me what is the most proven method of attacking
successful*
the whole time would predict two support move orders destroyed the enemy unit
chtalleyrand (345 D)
15 May 11 UTC
@ unparalleledsupremacy: Well, to MOVE to the territory occupied by enemy unit you obviously need one unit moving there and at least one another unit which gives support to the moving one. The strength of each unit is equal no matter if its is moving or giving support, so it’s the number of the units on each side which matters in the battle.

The most successful method of attack is (simply tactically) attacking enemy unit (one unit moves, all the rest support move) with the number of your units exceeding the maximum possible number of units which enemy can use for defense.

As to your last post, as I said above you need at least one unit moving. To defeat one stand alone enemy unit it’s enough to attack it with one unit and support move with another one.

You may find the Diplomacy rulebook quite useful for answering your questions. Description of support orders starts on page 7.

obi-twerp posted, "(And "Obi-wanker" is even worse than Fag-Naur!"
########################################################
Nice punctuation, English-boy.

IIRC Fag-Naur pulled his whole "I'm quitting, if the mods don't ban mapleleaf" tantrum just because of my DELIBERATELY insipid method of attack. I figured Fag-Naur out perfectly, and I PLAYED with him

Get it, obi-ohlookatmelookatme?

Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

One day, maple, you will be banned... For all eternity.
mention his age, its made him shut up everytime.
why wouldnt it, geezer is pushing fifty (past fifty?) and acts like a 14 year old to a college kid.

(hey, I'm creeping on 50 before long here ...)
actually takig a closer look at the situation from a diplomatic perspective, seeing that im naturally allying myself with obi and draug, authors of some of the most ridiculous posts i have read, i don't know if I can carry on with Maple. I think im going to declare myself neutral
Draugnar (0 DX)

Thanks Sanata, I was going for provocative (to maple at least), but inane (silly) works just fine too. Should get him riled up.

@chtalleyrand - i definately do not propose checking game histories as I like to play each game without any outside influeneces. One cannot help but remember a good oppenent you came across youself so you can't wipe this from your memory, but one shouldn't purposely research other players IMHO.

I try and determine other players possibl moves based on what has happened so far in the game, particularly the diplomacy, good diplomats know the good moves, bad diplomats don't. This is my starting point, if i need more info i will try and illicit it if possible my asking some questions that could reveal their level of play.
chtalleyrand (345 D)
16 May 11 UTC
@ Maniac: I see, thanks. And the thing about playing each game without outside influences - is it because you find it more effective (do you really believe people in each new game act independently from their behavior in previous games? but how about patterns of decision making, choices etc. which are more or less inherent in all human beings?) or just because it's more fun this way?
Ursa (1617 D)

I guess this is what every newbie wants to see: trollers trolling and the active forum members slapping eachother with their gloves.
Maniac (189 D(B))
16 May 11 UTC
@chtalleyrand - i used to play diplomacy at school with a bunch of friends and enjoyed it immensely. I try to emulate that experience here which is why I personnally don't trawl through endless previous games and which is why I also draw some games i should win (because that's what i would've done if we were all sat round my kitchen table all those years ago.
chtalleyrand (345 D)
16 May 11 UTC
@ Maniac: I got you :) Fun it is then! Well, aren’t we all here because of that? :) And I agree with you, studying of previous history can be boring at times :)

Maple...I think you're losing heart, dear friend...

I mean, spoofing my Philosophy thread was brilliant! An entire thread-length roast and troll session, all in one...it broke new WebDip Absurdity ground! It made me truly believe your career as a full-time troller was on the rebound!

But "obi-ohlookatmelookatme" is even worse than "Obi-wanker!" At leas the latter somewhat mimicked the sound of my name, "wan" to "wanker," but this?

"ohlookatmelookatme?"

You've used that material, maple! Yes, I post quite a bit, we get it! Yes, I have post an absurd amount on asurdly-abstract topics and long-dead white men!

We get it!

New set of jokes, please, maple...or do you have nothing more to find to make fun of?

Because, again, there's nothing sorrier--if it's spelled wrong, or spelt wrong, or improperly spelled, or ImPr0purlee spelled, I don't care, find a new angle!--than a jester who's run out of jokes.

(Further advice for newbiews:

Jesus teaches turning the other cheek, yes? Well, because the only way I could possibly appear more egotistical than I already have been before is to make a Lennon-esque statement and imply I might be bigger than Jesus, I suggest, for WebDip, that you take the slaps to your cheek--gay jokes are old hat, maple, try to make fun of something else here--with a grin, congratulate the fellow on a good jest...and come right back with a double-barrel response of a barb of your own and a stab in the next game! ...And obiwanobiwan does NOT approve of or endorse metagaming, so everyone cool their jets.)
Advice for newbies: pay attention to whether you're in a PPSC game or a WTA game. In a WTA game, you either win the game and take all, draw the game and split the pot equally among all survivors, or get nothing because a) you got eliminated, or b) someone else got to 18 first.

PPSC is more forgiving. If the game ends in a draw, the pot is split equally, and you get nothing if you're eliminated... but wins work differently. If someone wins, you get points according to your SC count. Even if you're the winner.

So in a PPSC game, there's really no reason to ever let yourself be eliminated, and little reason to risk elimination. There's always someone you can sell your services to in exchange for security.

To everybody who left gameID=58907
Please realise that when you leave games, you change the entire balance of the game. It's worse when you leave in a game without messaging. I hope you burn in diplomacy hell.

To those people who joined the game in the middle looking for an easy draw and then left later, I hope you suffer the same fate repeatedly without respite.
