Sitter etiquette

I need to get a sitter, but I've never gotten one before. What's the etiquette on that? I was thinking of going through old games and finding people that I got along well with. Is that the best bet for finding someone?

What are public-messaging-only games like?

In your experience, do players in public-messaging-only games choose to ally and coordinate in full view of the other players, or is it more like a gunboat game but with the ability to negotiate draws amongst opposing factions, etc? Or somewhere in between?

In the only one I participated in, it became a clusterfuck. E/F/G versus I/A/T with a 2 center Russia playing. We ended up in a 7 way draw because everyone was too afraid to stab anyone else.

It seems like a likely outcome if it appears there is a three way alliance. The other four have to band together to counter it. But if you can avoid that, then maybe you can get somewhere.

Your results may vary.

Sometimes if the people do not like talking it is a basiclly a gunboat but if you get a resionible ally and you realize you can not lose then you start talking freely

In my experience, it turns into the 'dark side of democracy' mob rule, where everyone decides to gang up on one or more powers.

I had very good experiences with Public Press, either in the "lots of talking" version or in the quieter one. The game can get stuck at times, but somehow, someone makes a mistake and gets eliminated. It's very different from the normal game, and when there is much talk it's also very different from a gunboat, except for the fact that moves say more than words.

It gives you the ability to have more creativity in your diplomacy. Also, I'd say its easier to find the player who you'll work best with.

The alliances tend to be much more honest and open. I enjoy public press games. It's how we play the Rage As Therapy series.

If you're playing gunboat right then you'll be able to negotiate an alliance there as well. Just because you don't speak doesn't mean you can't communicate.

The early part of a public press game does tend to fall into "mob rule." But if you're good at public press, you can make sure you're leading the mob (or at least in it) and not a target. Generally, talking a lot helps in the early stages--the quiet ones are most likely to get eliminated. After that, all sorts of things can happen depending on the early phases.

The key is to talk often early on in the game, because that's when everyone is searching for allies. I'm in a world public chat game right now and the quiet ones are falling. Just talk to everyone and stab one at a time, that's all i can say

Oh Civ how lowly you have fallen!

Civ V may be one of the biggest disappointment in my gaming career. No more religions! No more multible leaders! No more +/- numbers dip-o! No stable gameplay! No more crazy number of civs! On and on...and I thought Black Ops needs a couple patches, gees
