i am indeed moving on to the second round. i hope to see you there as well. ive been looking forward to playing with you again. i won one of the games and got defeated in my other, but only because my country was revealed with the whole little banning incident and everyone attacked me

Yes, I was very surprised by the number of solos. I don't know if that's a sign of uneven competition, or people giving their all to win.

@ab: I suspect that the answer is rooted in the PPSC scoring. If there are 4 or 5 players and you have a good number of SCs, it makes sense to take your 7-9

even if someone else solos.

@ab that's why there was a solo in one of my games. Germany basically offered me more regions than a 3-way would have got, for him to solo.

The scoring system option I would like to see is PPSC unless there's a solo, then winner take all. Players would be rewarded for doing well, but still have to come together to prevent a solo.

@ab: that's the nature of a PPSC scoring system. Kind of like the way that non-anonymous games affect the league, perhaps it's OK to have a system that works this way. And based on my count, there are only 2 players who did better with a "strong second" than they would have with a 3-way draw. It has some effect on the results, but not too much.

@Ashen: you ended that game with 10 SCs, right? That's not as good as a 3-way draw.

if there isn't a solo, then there is a draw. in draw ppsc and wta work the same.
if there is a solo, then wta
then in both cases what you describe is the WTA system
there is no ppsc element here.

I think what he wants is a weighted draw. If no winner, then everyone gets scored based on their total SC count, not equally. That is (I think) what gram meant.

@Ab: OK. I'm really curious to see if I got the results right, but I can wait for one more game. For what it's worth, if I'm right, meta-gaming wouldn't accomplish anything.

Solo victory in a game = 36
Participation in a draw = 34/# of players involved in the draw
Surviving a game = # of SCs you control at the end of the game

surviving with 12 scs is better than a 3 way draw?
or if you have a 3way draw you get 34/3=11.333 + number of scs you control?

Solo victory in a game = 36

So if you participate in a draw you don't also get points for the number of SCS you control at the end of the game??
Could anyone enlighten me?

That's correct hellalt.

If you are in a 3 way draw with the breakdown as 17 - 15 - 2, the players with 17 and 15 SCs will only gain 11.33

which is significantly less than the point total they would have received if one of them had soloed and the other earned a "survive". In this scoring system, it would be beneficial for the 15 SC player to allow the 17 SC player to grab 1 more SC so that he gains more points at game's end.

I'm inclined to agree. This is the scoring system that was used in the past, so I didn't look at it very closely. At the end of the tournament, I will be sending out a short survey so I can make improvements for next year. At that point, I'll be able to get a better idea of what people think of the scoring.

Sitter etiquette

What are public-messaging-only games like?

In your experience, do players in public-messaging-only games choose to ally and coordinate in full view of the other players, or is it more like a gunboat game but with the ability to negotiate draws amongst opposing factions, etc? Or somewhere in between?
