Build Location Bug
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=7151

Italy can't build fleets in Rome and Naples, and I can't build an army in Constantinople. Coincidentally enough, that's what we built in each of those locations before the reset.

Here...the stupidity of Zxylon.
Zxylon is a fool. Madmarx is going to be 3500 points up because of that.
I request two things: 1. We remove Germany. 2. We draw 4-way.

"Clean" maps?
I apologize if this has been brought up before. I haven't been able to find it in the FAQ or rules though. Is there a way to view a "clean" map of the board, without the attack and support lines of the previous turn?

Order of Countries in reports
Why are country's orders reported in the order EFIGART
I would have thought that either EFGIART or AEFGIRT would have been the norm,
not that it is a big thing... in fact it is a little tiny pick, but I am always curious as to why certain things are done by programers.

Question
Don't worry, it's related to Diplomacy.

What's the general rule of thumb for backstabbing a weaker ally? How many more SCs should I have before turning on my ally?

Why don't we make it so that you can specify the length of the pause in days when voting. I shall elaborate in the next post.

Smart Phones
Hey- Let me say how awesome it is to be able to easily play this entire game on a smart phone. Now I can't resist checking for messages from other players to plan a stab while I am at work, on lunch, in traffic, in long winded meetings, or relaxing on the couch.

Surrender or Resign
Is it possible to surrender or resign in a game? Or is Civil Disobedience the only way that happens?
Darwyn (1601 D)
03 Dec 08 UTC
There is no way to surrender or resign...Civil DISORDER is the only way to opt out, but that is frowned upon.

I would urge you to stick it out. It makes for an unbalanced game. And besides, as long as you aren't eliminated, there is a chance you can get back into the game, at least in hopes for a draw or survival for a share of points (if PPSC).
Civil Disorder (not disobedience) is not surrendering, it is quitting. Please finish your game.

This site would be so much better if, say, half of the people who CD just didn't CD on principle (my recommendation). (not that it isn't amazing already). but, come on, if you're down to 2 SCs its not hard to enter moves for them. plus people see in your rankings etc when u CD

I personally feel that if you sign up for a game you should play it to the end.
What I want is a method for the players to end a game early without engaging the draw or whatever.

I would also like the ability of players to resign for personal reasons in a manner that is respectable and allows for a replacement player right away.

On of the ideas might be to allow someone to resign and the game is automatically delayed for 48 hours to allow for a replacement. sounds like a reasonable solution to the going into CD.

As for surrendering... a better word might be concession.. I see nothing wrong with an option to have a concession to a win or a concession to a draw that does not include you. This allows the games to be ended faster, with a more social ending than the current Kill System where you have to kill people to get them out of the draw.

Here is a proposal for site change.
There is an option
/offerresignation.
If all players except 1 write /offerresignation, then the game ends with a winner.
If all players write /offerresignation or /draw, then the game ends with the players that wrote /draw sharing the points.
It needs to be made clear in the help that the other players do not have to accept the resignation offer, and that the player must play on if the resignation offer is not accepted or they go into CD.
There is also /unofferresignation, but it does not take affect until the beginning of the next round. You cannot allow withdrawing resignation at will or one player might offer resignation, the others writing /draw, then the resigned player withdrawing resignation just before the turn ends for an undeserved participation in the draw. A consequence of this is that you could write /offerresignation
/unofferresignation
for a 1 round resignation offer.

Seems like an approach. Have no idea how the code thingees do it, but it might work.

Would it be easier if there were buttons on the side or top of the map for draw/concede/resign whatever?
Can you do buttons in php code?
Katsarephat (100 D)
05 Dec 08 UTC
It does seem like a sound strategy, from my experience, though I have no idea how draw and pause votes are handled in the database.

As for buttons in PHP, yeah, in fact buttons are doable in straight HTML (which is the web development language most people use when you aren't even bothering with fancy programming on the site). All PHP has to do is output the HTML code for a button, and have code such that when the button is clicked the same thing that happens with /draw and /pause happens on the button click.

Bleh, I might have gotten a bit technical.
Caviare (123 D)
05 Dec 08 UTC
Buttons are nicer certainly, but means you also need a way of displaying each player's status with regard to offers: draw offered/resignation offered/no draw or resignation offered.
I guess that the reason Kestas started this /command style of doing things in the global messages area is that a record of what the other players have done with regard to draws and so forth is there for all to see without him having to implement a special player status area.

My proposal raises questions about how to divide the pot in PPSC if there is a winner. You couldn't allow the resigning players to get a share of the pot based on current SCs because the winner would end up with less than half. You could give the winner the whole pot, but then there is a strong disincentive to offer resignation. You could give the winner 18/34 of the pot and then divide the remainder between the survivors based on SC count. This is the best I can think of but it prevents the winner gaining more than 18/34 which they can currently do by pouncing on a whole lot of SCs in the final year.

Why did my post go bold and the typeface increase in size for earlier posts?
EdiBirsan (1469 D(B))
05 Dec 08 UTC
I see no bolding and typeface increases on my browser (IMac=Safari)

Point division is probably a matter of 18/34 for the conceded winner and the rest get a ratio of their points
"You could give the winner 18/34 of the pot and then divide the remainder between the survivors based on SC count. This is the best I can think of but it prevents the winner gaining more than 18/34 which they can currently do by pouncing on a whole lot of SCs in the final year."

As far as I know, you can not gain more points than 18 centres' worth in a PPSC game, regardless of how many centres you take in the game's last turn to win. Apparently back in the beginnings of this site they had a lot of people waiting to finishing off a game until they could position themselves for the optimal gain of supply centres at the end, so they changed the rules so that you can only win half the pot in a PPSC game in a solo, or so I am told. I guess the point was to speed up the games and to stop players from wiping out other people in the game when they were trying to get upwards of 20 centres to win,
So you need not worry about that being an incentive for players not to allow other people to resign Caviare :)!

Retreat Phase Suggestion
I know this has been brought up before, but I don't remember if there was support or not so I'll bring it up again. If a unit is dislodged and has no retreat options can we please change the code so a forced disband is automatic? It's incredibly annoying to wait on somebody to order his forced disband.

Bug?
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=6952

This seems pretty basic, but there's either a bug, or I don't understand the rules? Take a look at the Iberian peninsula. Shouldn't the English attack on Spain cut the support to Mid-Atlantic Ocean?
