Italy can't build fleets in Rome and Naples, and I can't build an army in Constantinople. Coincidentally enough, that's what we built in each of those locations before the reset.

"Clean" maps?
I apologize if this has been brought up before. I haven't been able to find it in the FAQ or rules though. Is there a way to view a "clean" map of the board, without the attack and support lines of the previous turn?

Order of Countries in reports
Why are country's orders reported in the order EFIGART
I would have thought that either EFGIART or AEFGIRT would have been the norm,
not that it is a big thing... in fact it is a little tiny pick, but I am always curious as to why certain things are done by programers.

Why don't we make it so that you can specify the length of the pause in days when voting. I shall elaborate in the next post.

What I am looking at is that since I joined the new feature has been the introduction of the /pause /draw feature.
There appears to be many more things that are done on different sites and potentials for new features and aspects.
Chrispminis (916 D)
03 Dec 08 UTC
Yeah, but honestly, I think the site is nice and elegant and I would hate to see it over clogged with features.

At the moment, I'd like to see a more GUI based mechanism for drawing and pausing. Maybe two buttons somewhere (under the map?) that have pause/unpause and draw/no draw sort of thing going on. Just pushing it would send an announcement on global that you've called for a pause or a draw or unpause or withdrawn your support of a draw. As well, have the ability of voting to exclude yourself from a draw so that an obvious outcome doesn't have to be played through just for a formally recognized draw.

It's a small thing, but I don't feel like the whole /command thing works well here. It's not so apparent to new users that the feature is available.

There are several French Websites running Diplomacy
one of the more interesting approaches is to mix languages on the same website so that Player A can get his results in English and Player B can play in the same game and get his results in French. This is only done at
www.stabbeurfou.org.

Actually 0.81 and 0.82 came out since you joined, so I think you're minimizing it a bit, but no I don't usually develop during semesters except to add things that are required (like the draw & pause commands, mod CP improvements etc). The largest releases 0.75 and 0.8 were done around this time in the last 2 years because it's the summer hols here and work isn't as mentally draining as study :-)

> There appears to be many more things that are done on

Maybe I'm misinterpreting, but I get the impression from your recent posts that you want phpDip to become a stabbeurfou clone.
There are definitely features which could be added here (and perhaps stabbeurfou could be made more beginner friendly), but each site fills its own niche

Making either mimic the other would defeat the purpose of either site e.g. Text-based vs generated orders, e-mail style messaging vs IM/forum style, committing to a tournament vs joining individual games, waiting lists vs selecting a game, etc. These are decisions which reflected what sort of site we wanted to build, not right/wrong

If stabbeurfou suits you and has the features you want then great, but we don't all look at stabbeurfou as the prototype of an ideal Diplo site, just because we have different goals

While I'm writing about this, do these sites with many more things being done really need this much advertising, especially here? :-P It seems to be getting a bit excessive
No other web-diplo site seems to do this, I've even had a stabberfou plug in the help forum in phpDip's Sourceforge project page :-| No idea what they were browsing around there for

I'm not sure, I'm always surprised to find that people don't know there's a large map because they didn't recognize the icon below the map right now, I'm not sure if a clear icon could be made at that size
The commands were a rushed fix though, and something graphical would be better

> I'm still waiting to do French translation. =)
Yeah translations and variants are the two features which are always at the end of the todo list :-(

I want to join the chorus of players who praise the people responsible for this site, not least Kestas who I sense is the Don Corleone of phpdiplomacy. A tip of the hat to you gents for developing and maintaining a site that continually occupies several hours of my day almost every day, much to the detriment of my work, my social relations etc. ;) I need to get a life but phpdiplomacy is in the way, unfortunately...

Let me restate some points so that I am not understood.
I GREATLY appreciate the efforts at the development here.
It is a wonderful achievement by Kestas and others.

When it comes to hobby services I am VERY GREEDY I want it all.
I want to see that the concept of competition drives to provide the bettering of all the products/services in the hobby. Clones is not what I am getting at.
Differences can be had in things such as
1, map displays different colors different languages
2, community scoring/ranking,
3. tournaments and games offered,
4. game entry and creation restrictisons
5. Variants supported either same board (Gunboat/Anonymous/Wilson/Escalation/Chaos/8 player whatever)
or different board configurations such as Youngstown/World/1901/Colonial
6. Communication ability between members not in the same game
7. policy on Identification
8. policy on gamemanship
9. availability of an GM to make delay and other policies including an Artificial Intelligence for missed moves
10. Different NMR and CD policies
11. Prize support for tournaments and or Demonstration/ShowCase games

Just to name a few

However Features of service, such as

1. optional email notifications,
2. full written reporting of orders such as retreats and builds
3. NMR retreat and build NMR's designations
4. retaining correspondence in game
5. retaining and accessing correspondence in forum
6. optional map icons on an individual basis (not just game wide at creation)
7. Different deadline structures that can be automated such as a M-W-F or Tuesday and Thursdays

These are things that I would like to see in all sites.
It is sort of like the automobile industry... I want everyone to have factory warranties, I want everyone to over a range of colors, I want everyone to have cars that fit a national safety criteria etc.

Like I said, call me greedy or demanding, I just want every site to be the best that they can so that the differences are focused on options with a high level of core expectation to the hobby.
EdiBirsan (1469 D(B))
03 Dec 08 UTC
Actually... these are points so that I am not MISunderstood... then again it is Diplomacy and maybe being 'not understood' has some advantage somewhere.
