Pop quiz (test on media performance)
Now that the Arizona legislation has been vetoed and the issue is gone, I'm curious.

Please -- in your own words, and *without reading or re-reading any sources,* state what you think the recent controversial Arizona legislation said.

Tactical Advice
Hey, all. I was wondering if someone would be willing to provide some tactical advice. I am new to the game and am still unsure about some of the rules. I am playing England and am engaged in a struggle for Scandinavia with Russia. How do I avoid a stalemate up North? Russia has a strong alliance with Austria, and I France.

On the subject of distance running...
I'm running a 10k later this spring. My best recent 5 mile time is 35:08, and my best 6 mile time is sub-42 minutes. What is a good time to make my goal, and are these good times for an amateur? I don't want to embarrass myself.

How do you view the role of government?
This is a survey, not (yet) a debate thread. bo's thread about Arizona and the responses therein got me thinking about the question, and I don't think we've explicitly discussed it here in a while. I want to start out just getting answers to the question and then we can argue about them all we want (as is webDip tradition).

Well today was interesting
Normally I find the news on main websites pretty stupid (what celebrities hooked up today, etc), but I was pretty intrigued by the battery-less flashlight, the knife attack in China, and Russia trying to start a war.

Russia's not going to start a war, and even if they try, the US isn't going to do that. It's just talk meant to play at your emotions.

Oh I meant with Ukraine and the EU. Though we all know the EU will never actually do anything that leads to fighting.

"Though we all know the EU will never actually do anything that leads to fighting."

The sad part is I think you actually believe this.

I think he means they'll never actually start a war that's not, to use a sports analogy, a one-sided contest.

What bo said. The EU are followers, they don't make decisions on their own, they just follow whoever, mainly the US, makes the choice, and since I don't think the US would take action against Russia for this then there's no way the EU would on their own.

Last I checked France was an EU member state and very active in the Centrafricaine Republique, Mali, Libya, pushed for war with Syria, etc. They have been at the forefront of all these interventions.

Also EU as a whole played a very big role in contributing to the conflict in the West Balkans in the early 1990s. Germany and Austria recognized Croatia and Bosnia before anything could be negotiated, and Germany pushed heavily for the rest of Europe to follow suit.

The EU are anything but passive onlookers.

So what do you think of Russia's move into Ukraine? Or of the new flashlight technology?
Putin33 (111 D)

I salute the former and also applaud the people of Donetsk for taking over the city government. Down with the putsch.

I have no idea about the flashlight thing.

"Last I checked France was an EU member state and very active in the Centrafricaine Republique, Mali, Libya, pushed for war with Syria, etc. They have been at the forefront of all these interventions."

There was little noticeable intervention in Syria because, like jmo said, the US didn't go with them. Libya was a relatively unique situation for France, given that they were just a thin waterway away, and Mali was a terrorist group. I'm not up to date on the situation in CAR but if it involves the LRA in any way then it is a conflict worth having.

No one said the EU are passive onlookers. They simply aren't about to start a war with Russia, who would spank their collective asses if they fought without the US, and even with the US in a WW3-esque scenario, it would be a toss-up, which isn't the EU's type of fight (as I made mention of before).

Basically we're calling the EU cowards when it comes to a fair fight. Only willing to step in if they know the cost to their troops will be negligible.

It's not like that's a bad thing. Human lives aren't worth throwing around recklessly.

Oh I didn't say it's a bad or good thing, I just said it how it appears to be.

1.) I hope there isn't a 2nd charge of the light brigade.
2.)The knife attack was interesting because of the fact that it was organized and caused by multiple assailants. I would expect an organized group with ideological motivations to have something other than knives. But sadly they took quite a toll on innocent life, and it could have been worse.
3.) While it is an interesting invention, I think Crank Powered flashlights will remain the norm.

Are countries 100% randomly assorted?
Is the distribution of which empire one starts of with entirely random or is it influenced in any way? I've checked my game history and I've been assorted Austria on 8 of 15 occasions and am getting slightly bored of it.
