Pop quiz (test on media performance)
Now that the Arizona legislation has been vetoed and the issue is gone, I'm curious.

Please -- in your own words, and *without reading or re-reading any sources,* state what you think the recent controversial Arizona legislation said.

Tactical Advice
Hey, all. I was wondering if someone would be willing to provide some tactical advice. I am new to the game and am still unsure about some of the rules. I am playing England and am engaged in a struggle for Scandinavia with Russia. How do I avoid a stalemate up North? Russia has a strong alliance with Austria, and I France.

On the subject of distance running...
I'm running a 10k later this spring. My best recent 5 mile time is 35:08, and my best 6 mile time is sub-42 minutes. What is a good time to make my goal, and are these good times for an amateur? I don't want to embarrass myself.

How do you view the role of government?
This is a survey, not (yet) a debate thread. bo's thread about Arizona and the responses therein got me thinking about the question, and I don't think we've explicitly discussed it here in a while. I want to start out just getting answers to the question and then we can argue about them all we want (as is webDip tradition).

Well today was interesting
Normally I find the news on main websites pretty stupid (what celebrities hooked up today, etc), but I was pretty intrigued by the battery-less flashlight, the knife attack in China, and Russia trying to start a war.

Are countries 100% randomly assorted?
Is the distribution of which empire one starts of with entirely random or is it influenced in any way? I've checked my game history and I've been assorted Austria on 8 of 15 occasions and am getting slightly bored of it.

EU takes another step towards a total smoking ban
The EU has this week voted to ban menthol cigarettes and 10-packs.

There is the difference of Dutch and American, but yeah, seems parts of the US had chocolate cigarettes too.

@Draugnar the US ban on alcohol did work, the amount of alcoholism dropped exponentially during prohibition. We still are not back up to pre-prohibition levels of alcoholism in the US.

Scooter, even if that's true, you should look up what a post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy is, because you're apparently unaware that you just made one.

@oscarjd74 What else do you chalk the exponential decrease up to then? I am not a huge fan of saying that laws change citizens, but it seems pretty apparent that's the case with prohibition.

In other words, people like Oscar can make statements completely unsubstantiated by any data, and then decry that any data which disagrees with their conclusion is a 'logical fallacy', even though alcoholism was rising exponentially prior to prohibition.

Another factor that might have been significant is the fact that the start of the Great Depression pretty much coincided with the end of the prohibition. Unemployment rose to 25% in those days in the US. Desperate people are more prone to alcohol abuse I suspect.

Now Putin, if I were to state that the Great Depression caused the increased alcohol consumption then that would fit the data just as well as your hypothesis that it was the end of the prohibition. Do you now understand the fallacy? Or do I need to spell it out even more?
ScooterBrown (100 D)

I understand the fallacy, you just feel right into it.

You're not paying attention Oscar.

The point is alcoholism was rising *prior to prohibition*, and after prohibition ended it did not go back to pre-prohibition levels. The point is not that consumption skyrocketed after prohibition ended, because it did not.
Putin33 (111 D)
28 Feb 14 UTC
So actually the Great Depression point is an even more remarkable indicator of how prohibition worked at destroying production in the USA.
oscarjd74 (100 D)
28 Feb 14 UTC
From wikipedia: "Scholars estimate that consumption dropped to a low of about 60% of pre-prohibition levels around 1925, rising to almost 80% before the law was officially repealed."

Apparently the consumption started to rise again well before the prohibition was repealed. So the decrease might have just had to do with a reduced availability as the mafia needed some time to organize the illegal trade in alcoholic beverages. I'm not sure that was the cause, but this data certainly seems to falsify the hypothesis that consumption rose due to the prohibition being repealed.
