Is the GOP Dying?
Amid yet another sign of a complete brainwashing scheme to throw out anyone with a half bit of independent thought, the GOP appears to be splitting. Where's the line, (when) are they going to split?

You idiots!
I'd like to point out to everyone on this website that is a Marxist (There are quite a few of them, though I've muted most), that it hasn't worked in the long run ANYWHERE. Soviet Russia, Cuba, France, Norway, Poland, Rumania, Czechoslovakia, Angola, Somalia--all places where Marxism existed for a long time, ended up worse off then they were before.

policy question: game cancellation due to banned players
I know that if 2 players are banned in the same game the policy is to cancel the game after the players have been given an opportunity to draw it.
philcore (317 D(S))

I've always thought it was a reasonable policy, but the only time it affected one of my games was like 4 years into a classic game, and then it just made sense. Too much had happened in the game and the balance was clearly upset.

Recently however, two players were banned, and I took over one in a classic game, and the other in a world game, and now I see things slightly differently.

In world games, two players don't really mean shit, unless they're neighbors, and even then, it seems unlikely that they are able to upset the balance very much because there are so many other players.

In classic and AM games, there is definitely a balance issue. However if they are caught in the first year, then they haven't really had time to affect anything.

The world game I took over never got a message that it was going to be cancelled. I think this is appropriate, but there still should be a clarification on the policy.

The classic game though did get a message saying it would be cancelled. But after "protest" on the global by me and one of the players who was in the game originally, Jmo, being the wise and fair mod that he is, allowed the players to choose. France, the other player who wants to continue, hasn't even taken Spain or port yet, and Belgium is still open.

Since this happened in the first year and both positions were taken over in fall retreats, there hasn't really been any imbalance due to the banned players. So I think jmo's decision to let the players choose is the right one. I suggested that since he paused the game to allow for a draw decision prior to cancelling, that our unpause votes be used as our indication to continue. And if anyone decides not to, then I'm fine with it being cancelled. But it got me thinking about the policy and I figured I'd bring it up to see if maybe we can get some clarification on the special cases.

I might suggest something along these lines:

World games ... Only take action if someone in the game requests it

Classic games ... If before completion of the second spring diplomacy phase, pause and tell the players if everyone draws, its a draw (current policy) but if everyone unpauses, then continue, otherwise cancel.

Ancient Med ... If before completion of first fall diplomacy phase, pause and tell the players if everyone draws, its a draw (current policy) but if everyone unpauses, then continue, otherwise cancel.

I agree, but I'm not sure this needs additional policy though. Leaving it up to the mods to moderate in special cases seems to be the wise strategy. If you prescribe too much, it will effect the room that mods have in decided - in that fair and wise fashion - what is the most appropriate course in any given situation.
philcore (317 D(S))

@mow if the policy is that the mods can decide case by case, then that is still a different policy than the one which is stated. At this point jmo is acting outside the policy, I would prefer it if he were acting within the bounds of it because it stated that they have that leeway.

Don't get me wrong, I'm saying that what he's doing in my games is absolutely the right thing to do, I would just like it stated, so that a future mod, who is less experienced, doesn't feel like he's bound by the policy that has become the norm.

Also, I think that proposing the mechanics of the implementation of the policy, takes a little off their plate. They can just pause a game and state the conditions and lettuce players decide. Nice and easy.

Or cabbage the players decide ... Whatever!

That was me playing off my autocorrect ;-) I crack me up!
Lettuce decide! :-D
@philcore - current policy as per we operate on is that if a game has more than one player banned for cheating in it, it will be cancelled unless there is unanimous opinion among the players to continue on. If there are 3 or more cheaters caught in a game, we usually don't even give the option to continue.

You bring a valid point to world games though. I believe a more appropriate number to draw the line on cancelling would be 4 players on that map.
philcore (317 D(S))

@gf right, but I think in this case jmo is doing the right thing by taking into consideration how early the players were caught. I would just like it to be the policy that all mods understand that they have that option. For the record that classic game will still likely be cancelled, because 2 players haven't logged in for 3 and 4 days. And I'm fine with that, he'll, I haven't even had a chance to move, so I'm not too invested unit - after all, I have the masters to deal with ( not being one of the drop outs! ;-)

I just think it warrants a review. Let what jmo is doing being the. Orm, rather than the exception.
philcore (317 D(S))

S/B let what jmo is doing being the norm,
Can I ask what happened in gameID=115493 then? I took over a civil disordered Italy during fall of 01', and someone else took over England, because i wanted to help out the game, but no one mentioned the policy, and there were (more) than two players banned over the course of the game... As well as some people who NMR'd into civil disorder (it was a pretty messed up game). I ony ask because it took us most f the and to convine one of the players the and shouldn't be played through and we basically had to play it till he got bogged down.
@Ancient - those were two completely unconnected multis that happened to be in the same game. Since there were no connections between them, they could not have cooperated to influence the game at all, so the automatic cancellation policy was not used.

The general policy is the cancel a game when there are 2 or more cheaters in a game who have been cheating together. The general problem is that having any cheaters in a game alters the diplomacy of the game. Especially in the opening year. As a rule games are cancelled because that kind of influence makes it unfair to someone who takes over a cheaters position.

In the case of world games we try not to interfere, since almost every world game is affected by bans, CD's or nmr's. In those games cheaters are very rarely next to each other. I've only have to cancel 1 world game where 6 countries were being operated by the same person.

Every case is unique though, in the game you mentioned philcore, the game hadn't been overly affected so it's fair to let everyone decide what they want to do. In games where someone has been eliminated though, or in games where alliances have already been established it is usually unfair to let the game continue.

AncientMemories, the game you mentioned did have multiple banned players, but none of them were working together, so the game alliances weren't affected.

Ok fair enough. I think the policy makes sense, for the most part. I was just wanting future mods to be able to have the discretion to decide, as you did, rather than feel like "rules are rules" and that their hands were tied.
Hazel-Rah (1262 D)

I was France in the game AncientMemories referenced. Game alliances were absolutely affected because the game balance was so screwed up. When England is banned and/or NMRs multiple times in the first few game years, that has a direct affect on how France, Germany, and Russia are going to interact.

In our case, Russia decided to take advantage of England's absence (and what I'll call a misstep by Germany in the first year) by quickly securing Scandinavia and descending upon Germany. I'm not sure of his motivation, but it was as if Russia had had a plan from the outset to take down Germany, and nothing was going to stop him, not even the calls from every single other player for a draw.

I played most of the game, not to win or draw or survive, but to spite Russia. Without England to worry about, what else was there to do? At every turn I asked myself, not what moves would best secure more French territory, but what would frustrate and annoy Russia the most. Because the game was so irrevocably messed up that the only joy I was getting out of it was abusing him.

What I'm saying is, I believe if in the first few years multiple players leave a game through bans or civil disorder or whatever, an automatic draw for those left should be the default option. Those of us interested in a fair, balanced game should not be held hostage to those looking for a cheap win.

Normal Games?
Although I haven't been on this exact website very long, I've noticed that there aren't that many normal games anymore. I don't mean like classic, or world diplomacy or whatever. It just seems there are a lot of gunboat and winner-takes-all/no in-game messaging games. I'm not dissing those types because they can be fun. But diplomacy is about talking with people. I'm not dissing different types. I'd just like to know other people's views on this.

mobile app!
I think a mobile app for this site would be great. Notifications when people send messages or that a phase is almost finished would help games move along much smoother. I'm sure there are many more things that could be done on an app, maybe even everything, but that alone would be helpful. I don't know anything about programming apps, though, so someone get on it!!
