Is the GOP Dying?
Amid yet another sign of a complete brainwashing scheme to throw out anyone with a half bit of independent thought, the GOP appears to be splitting. Where's the line, (when) are they going to split?

You idiots!
I'd like to point out to everyone on this website that is a Marxist (There are quite a few of them, though I've muted most), that it hasn't worked in the long run ANYWHERE. Soviet Russia, Cuba, France, Norway, Poland, Rumania, Czechoslovakia, Angola, Somalia--all places where Marxism existed for a long time, ended up worse off then they were before.

Close the damn prison Yankees. You're creating new enemies that all NATO countries will have to go fight again. The NRA is a much more dangerous organization now than Al Qaeda is. Move on.

policy question: game cancellation due to banned players
I know that if 2 players are banned in the same game the policy is to cancel the game after the players have been given an opportunity to draw it.

Normal Games?
Although I haven't been on this exact website very long, I've noticed that there aren't that many normal games anymore. I don't mean like classic, or world diplomacy or whatever. It just seems there are a lot of gunboat and winner-takes-all/no in-game messaging games. I'm not dissing those types because they can be fun. But diplomacy is about talking with people. I'm not dissing different types. I'd just like to know other people's views on this.

Survey about Lando's tournament and TD policy
Just in case people don't look at the tournament's thread.
Here's the survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/SQNP86Z
We will take everyone's vote into our decision. If there is a disagreement between tourney players and everyone else, Kestas will decide what to do.

Can the moderators please ban people who sign up for games and don't show up to play them?

A no-show totally messes up the balance of the game.

mobile app!
I think a mobile app for this site would be great. Notifications when people send messages or that a phase is almost finished would help games move along much smoother. I'm sure there are many more things that could be done on an app, maybe even everything, but that alone would be helpful. I don't know anything about programming apps, though, so someone get on it!!

There's a potentially interesting debate on the pitiful farce that masquerades as the Italian justice system these days, but I guess it fits rather well with the pitiful farce of Italian politics and Italian economics.

But these things are never fun unless we have an Italian around we can feel smug against. "Ha, you may have great weather and live unnaturally long and forfilled lives, but your country is shite in both the real world and Diplomacy", sort of thing... Maybe there's one on vDip we could invite over and then be total arseholes to?

Innocent. The case against her was always absurd.

Well, most people who have looked at the case closely say that there are strong suspicions about her, but the investigation was led so badly that the whole case is a mess (and Italians sadly agree to that btw), and we will probably never know the truth.
There is a strong divide in public opinion across the two sides of the Atlantic: most Americans think she is innocent, most Europeans think she is guilty.
What bothers me in this case is that most people are interested in this case out of voyeurism because the main suspect is good looking, or because they vouch for or against the US, but not many care about the victim or her family.

I remember when I first read about it she sounded so guilty. Especially the way Knox blamed her boss, even though he couldn't possibly have done it. Then there was her allegedly strange behaviour. The sexual promiscuity, sado-masochisticm, possibly even devil worship .And the clincher was the forensic evidence against her, which seemed so strong at first.

But you don't have to scratch very far beneath the surface to realise the whole case against her was a fantastical concoction by an idiotic and possibly corrupt prosecutor who had a an obsession with the idea of sex and the black arts. The whole case was a witch hunt. It made for a great story but that is all it was - a story. And because the story was so shocking it achieved a lot of press coverage. The truth was far mundane (the truth often is but people prefer a more imaginitive story).@

Read about the prosecutor here:

The prosecutor has indeed been terrible, so the investigation was spoiled, but that does not mean that there is certainty about what actually happened. It is said that a much more professional team took over the case for this retrial, so we should all hope for a fair trial and that the truth arises. Anyhow whatever the conclusions, there is little chance that Knox would ever return to serve jail time in Italy as it would require extradition from the US and this probably is contrary to the principle of double jeopardy. What bothers me in this case is the behaviour of Knox, telling different stories, accusing an innocent man with no reason (why the heck would she do so?), saying police and judges are all lying to convict her etc.. it does not mean she killed her room mate, but something does not work here. Maybe she covers her ex bf, or who knows what happened, but innocent people usually do not change stories a few times.
spyman (424 D(G))

There are plausible explanations for all of the above. See the link I posted which discusses all of the points.

Regarding Patrick Lumumba who Knox blamed which does sound quite damning. However she was manipulated by the police into blaming him. She was in shock at the murder of her friend, she was being accused of being involved and questioned for several hours about the case with the police insisting that they already knew Lumumba was the murderer. Knox cracked under pressure and basically agreed to say what the police wanted her to say. She recanted (the next day I think or very shortly after).

The case against her was feeble. There was no motive and the alleged forensic evidence against her was totally discredited.

The real murderer, Rudy Guede, was a troubled street person who Knox barely knew. But the prosecutor concocted a story about how there was some kind if weird ménage a trois between Knox, her boyfriend and Guede but there was zero evidence supporting this idea.
Julien (2065 D)

yes the lack of motive is the most troubling part.
but i also read that 1. it has been proved that guede did not act alone 2. the forensic evidence is there but was not handled properly the first time, this is why there is hope on this second investigation with (hopefully) more professional investigators 3. i do not believe that all Italian policemen are liars would invent a culprit and harass an innocent girl into telling that guy is guilty. her main line of defence is to discredit italy police and judicial system, but this does not help to explain many unresolved points that seem to accuse her.
but, once again, she may as well be innocent, im only saying here that it is a bit early to draw conclusions over this case. You'll agree with me that if she is innocent, her going back to jail would be infamous. and you'll also agree with me that if she is guilty, her being free and writing a book and giving interviews is also infamous. So the only thing I hope in this sad case is that some clear conclusions can still be drawn, and that relief will be brought to the family of the victim.

The Star-Crossed Stars and Bars--Mere Symbol of the South or a Symbol of...THAT South
http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2013/04/why-accidental-racist-is-actually-just-racist/274826/ A little late to the party on this one, but I've been very busy with classes (hence my brief absence...anyone miss me? *crickets* LOL) but as we have quite a few Southerners here, I thought I'd ask--would you ever wear/display a Confederate flag, and just take it as a symbol of the South, or is that spoiled by some of it's possible negative connotations?

Civil disorder on saved moves?
If you save your orders but don't mark as ready and then time runs out, does civil disorder ensue? Or are saved orders carried out? Sorry if this answered somewhere in the rules section, but I could not find an answer.

Funny baby stories about your baby or you as a baby
As a dad of a 29 month old baby, there are a number of things that my daughter does that just makes me burst out laughing. I would like to share some of them with you folks, and if you have your own to share (whether of your kids or of yourself when you were little), that would be great.
