Claims of metagaming
Do people really do this as a tactic? I'm curious because I was just sent a sternly (but politely) worded email regarding such a charge, and I know for a fact that it's baseless, so either someone is a bit precious about being ganged up on, or they're using it to gain some sort of advantage in a game.

Need a mod for this game
Here is the link
http://www.webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=62836#gamePanel

England, Italy, and I (Austria) voted to draw and unpause, however Germany is gone. I don't want to take the win away from Italy, considering he wins the next game, could a mod unpause the game? Germany did not have a chance to win anyway. If anyone did it was England.

Hey, mods, I kinda made a big mistake...
I signed up for a live game as the last player (can't leave) thinking it was starting in 18 minutes. It's starting in 18 hours. I am 99% sure I won't be here for it. Is there any recourse?

This is getting ridiculous...
gameID=43762 We started with 170 pot, we have 344 now. I don't know why people join for one phase and never come back, but it is getting a bit silly having a new India, Pacific Russia and Antarctica every second week.

Can anyone defend socialism?
Can anyone defend the idea that "government" can produce a better society by diminishing individual freedom in exchange for increased socialist imposition of government power on the individual?

@Yonni - The 'X' ship program didn't need government help. All the things you mention could have been done through private industry. Hell, harnessing electricity? No need for the government there. The microchip? A government progrma (NASA) may have provided the impetus to speed up the progress, but it would have happened. Sometimes the government provides the funds and the impetus, but the government is *not* an innovator.

@Chew - Had to read that twice to catch the Clinton/Dodd/Frank/Waters sarcasm. For a minute there I thought you were about to credit Clinton with bringing the FMs under some control and somehow reducing the damage. Glad I was wrong. Whew! +1 to Chew.
guak (3381 D)

@Yonni: I think it is an absolute fallacy to state that the government is needed to achieve scientific progress. I am sure that if the government did not take such a large piece of the pie from taxes, private companies would invest more in developing technologies.
Tettleton's Chew (0 DX)
23 Jun 11 UTC
Yonni, What specifically are you talking about? The space program was the government paying private contractors to build everything? Today NASA is ending space flight while private companies keep undertaking space flight. The government has the lead in nuclear engineering? I guess we can ignore the transistor and integrated circuit developed at Bell Labs. The personal computer is somehow a government invention now? Java computer language, Viagra, consumer electronics, etc are all thanks to the government? I can't wait to read the fantastic chain that will be posted that claims that all inventions whatsoever weave their way on a web back to some "government" project.

The private sector is bad at producing order, stability, basic research, infrastructure and an educated workforce.

Basically the stuff you need to make everything else work.

Oh, I forgot: and legislation against raw milk.
Tettleton's Chew (0 DX)
23 Jun 11 UTC
Who wants order and stability? Life is about being free to take risks and make huge leaps that destroy the old order and replace it with a new, vigorous framework.

Order and stability are dangerous ideas to organize any social group around. White supremacists relied on these two ideas in their arguments to maintain segregation.
manganese (100 D)
23 Jun 11 UTC
White supremacists, indeed. Does that count as a Godwin?
Tettleton's Chew (0 DX)
23 Jun 11 UTC
"legislation against raw milk" is simply a pseudonym for government attacks on individual freedom. When you have to regulate what milk people drink all you no government has lost its mind.
Tettleton's Chew (0 DX)
23 Jun 11 UTC
Manganese, are you denying that white supremacists in the South used arguments about maintaining Order and Stability as crucial pieces to justify segregation?
Now if you are embarrassed that your ill conceived post associated you with the arguments of white supremacists look in the mirror for the culprit.
Your ill conceived ideological statements are easily exposed.
Yonni (136 D(S))
23 Jun 11 UTC
Of course a lot can be undertaken by private enterprises. However, there are certain projects that certainly need government organization/funding. From a Canadian perspective, CANDUs wouldn't exist with national labs. CERN (at least in the capacity it has today) wouldn't exist on private funding alone. Research at universities is funded (in part) by government grants.

There are many areas of research without immediately realizable financial gains. Government funding often serves as the most efficient means of exploring these areas.
Yonni (136 D(S))
23 Jun 11 UTC
Also, saying shit like "can't wait to read the fantastic chain that will be posted that claims that all inventions whatsoever weave their way on a web back to some "government" project." really belittles your argument. You're clearly misinterpreting what I said on purpose.
manganese (100 D)
23 Jun 11 UTC
I do not deny that racists used those kinds of arguments.

I do deny that it is relevant.

Tettleton's Chew (0 DX)
23 Jun 11 UTC
Instead of order and stability the emphasis should be on the greatest individual freedom possible. Milton Friedman phrased it perfectly when he said that a society that demands equality before freedom will achieve neither, but a society that puts freedom above equality will achieve a great measure of both.
It's so shocking to see so many people intimidated by freedom and secure in an ever increasing sphere of government power.
Our founders saw government power as corrupt and malignant.
Tettleton's Chew (0 DX)
23 Jun 11 UTC
Manganese I submit you cannot use arguments that can be co-opted in any way by racists. If you rely on personal freedom and the expression of individual self-determination you do not have these kinds of problems.
Putin33 (111 D)
23 Jun 11 UTC
Friedman was a support of Pinochet (freedom indeed) and Washington & Adams were in favor of the Alien & Sedition Acts. Jefferson himself sued people for seditious libel.

Oh well carry on with your sloganeering and cheap rhetoric.

Tettleton's Chew (0 DX)

Putin, you post inaccurate historical fiction all the time. I guess when you support indefensible ideologies you have no choice.
Putin33 (111 D)
23 Jun 11 UTC
Oh and the greatest founder of them all, Hamilton, believed the President should be President for life and did more than anyone to expand the power of the national government after the disastrous years of the Articles of Confederation.

Now you're just being weird.
Putin33 (111 D)

"Putin, you post inaccurate historical fiction all the time. "

Really, what did I say that was inaccurate in that last post?
Tettleton's Chew (0 DX)
23 Jun 11 UTC
Thank you for the compliment manganese. If you thought I wasn't weird it would mean something was really wrong with my ideas.
Tettleton's Chew (0 DX)
23 Jun 11 UTC
That Friedman was a "supporter" of Pinochet, but that is an old, discredited line of fantasy anyway. I've seen that you rely on old , discredited lines of reasoning.
Putin33 (111 D)
23 Jun 11 UTC
Dear Tettleton, are you in favor of the Civil Rights Act of 1964? Or do you believe private property owners have the right to discriminate?

If you oppose the Act, you can kindly shut your face about your supposed libertarian anti-racism. If you support the Act, apparently you love government power more than you let on.
Tettleton's Chew (0 DX)
23 Jun 11 UTC
Stalin and Lenin are your heroes Putin, How many millions do you think they murdered between them? You rant about Hamilton, Jefferson, Washington, and Adams. What circus freak show do you perform in?
Tettleton's Chew (0 DX)
23 Jun 11 UTC
Discriminate Putin? What do you mean by the value laden term? Be specific. I've learned that you can only throw out ambiguities and I've known you for such a short time?

I will be specific. Can a private property owner discriminate based on race, sex, gender, ethnicity, or religion when he puts his private property out for public consumption, absolutely not.
Can a private property owner discriminate based on credit rating, smoking habits, and pets absolutely.

You should try clarity Putin. People who use logic and reason would take you more seriously.

manganese (100 D)
23 Jun 11 UTC
Chew, you're ideas aren't coherent enough for me to find them weird. I was referring to your argumentation. It makes no sense.
Tettleton's Chew (0 DX)
23 Jun 11 UTC
How would chew know what you were referring to manganese. You have Putin's disease of being imprecise and ambiguous.
Lin Biao Jr. (359 D)

And who decides the bases upon which the private property can or cannot discriminate?
You?
Putin33 (111 D)
23 Jun 11 UTC
Right, this exchange of love letters between the two of them never happened, and Pinochet never implemented Friedman's policies (to disastrous effect).

Yonni, I've already realized that a vast majority of the posts in this thread don't rely on credibility, but if you want to single me out feel free. I'm an advocate of individual freedom after all.

Never, ever, ever ask me to pause a game again.....ever
As you probably know I don't like pausing, but will do so occassionally when people promise to be back by so and so date. But then somebody else announces that they won't unpause for another week, and there is nothing I can do - and of course the mods won't intervene. Which is all fine, but don't ever expect me to pause again - if you don't like it don't join a game I'm in. /endrant

A Question On Film
Took a Film and Lit class this semester--and it was a lot of fun, one of the msot enjoyable classes I've had while in collage, the material was only so-so, but the atmosphere and folks there were great--and it got me thinking: what "kind" of art would you classify film as? A different kind of theatre? A different, motion-based kind of canvas/physical art? Another kind of medium? It's own category? How should we evaluate film artistically, as it's now such a part of our modern culture?
