Personally, if you want to play with friends, make a private game. That's what they're there for. Don't try to mess around trying to do something you know you are going to get caught at. And anyway, what do you have to gain from metagaming? Oh, another win on a random game that has few to no practical applications. If you're going to cheat, do it somewhere where it makes a difference, like the IRS.

It's allowed for people to email the mods about a suspicion they had but it's frowned on to mention it in the game and use it in any sort of diplomatic way.

As in "I know you're a multi but if you help me solo I won't tell the mods." yeah no. That's bullshit. Lol.

And if you know for a fact that you're not cheating Bernardo then you have nothing to worry about so just cooperate with us as we investigate :) It won't affect your game.

OK, so how about "Hey, I've played against you on other games, and get the impression that you're a reliable and trustworthy player. If the opportunity presents itself, would you be interested in an alliance?" (not an exact quote).

Does that count as meta-gaming? How about if you decide to not trust someone because you know they have a history of stabbing?

Oh, and Axx, this wasn't a case where people who knew each other decided to join a game together, it's a case where someone recognised a player (me) from another game and let their opinion of my behaviour in that game sway their decision to offer an alliance.

Bernardo, that's completely okay. If you've played with other people you naturally pick up on their tendencies. The rule against metagaming is out-of-game stuff; their tendencies are part of their play style which is certainly within the game, and though acquired outside of the specific game it is still information from within the game and thus legal.

Livedip, I won't hold that against you. BUT DON't EVER JOIN A GAME YOU KNOW HAS ME IN IT IF YOU CAN HELP IT!!! Anyway, it's find to pick up tendencies, and be alert, but you shouldn't hold people to those tendencies

A friend of mine was playing England in a game recently where France announced in the global that England had admitted to being a multi, also playing Germany. Totally untrue, and needless to say England and Germany turned on him pretty quick (cue "See, I told you! Look at them working together!")
So yes, it is occasionally used as a (poor) tactic. In your case it sounds like you received the email from a mod-- as long as your accuser is going to the mods rather than making public accusations I wouldn't worry about it too much.
