Claims of metagaming
Do people really do this as a tactic? I'm curious because I was just sent a sternly (but politely) worded email regarding such a charge, and I know for a fact that it's baseless, so either someone is a bit precious about being ganged up on, or they're using it to gain some sort of advantage in a game.

Need a mod for this game
Here is the link
http://www.webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=62836#gamePanel

England, Italy, and I (Austria) voted to draw and unpause, however Germany is gone. I don't want to take the win away from Italy, considering he wins the next game, could a mod unpause the game? Germany did not have a chance to win anyway. If anyone did it was England.

Everybody is still alive and I would really appreciate a draw (the name of the game pleases me). Anyways a lot of people left because for some reason WebDip went down.

Hey, mods, I kinda made a big mistake...
I signed up for a live game as the last player (can't leave) thinking it was starting in 18 minutes. It's starting in 18 hours. I am 99% sure I won't be here for it. Is there any recourse?

Dearest WebD people, wishing you a happy Canada Day regardless of your nationality (although I know there are a few of us here). It's a beautiful, sunny day here in Ottawa...and I invited Will and Kate over to my house party tonight, but still haven't heard back from them. Hope you all have a great day!

So, I was going to wait a month to talk about this, but, honestly, I'm just too excited. So, put your name and where in the *world* you're willing to travel, so we can pick our next destination. This is just to get a general impression of where the most activity is.

Just to throw the Europe option open, London would be do-able, and I might have a venue possible. It depends how many you need for a tournament! I lost track of the previous FTF one in the US - how many people turned up?

How about 1000 miles from Ottawa. That will let me go as far south as Charlotte NC.
We had 17 people at Boston. (21 people paid and 4 did not show up on Saturday)

WebDip Cruise for F2F in 2012!
Draugnar (0 DX)
16 Jun 11 UTC
I need to talk to the cruise lines. They do other themed cruises including poker. Diplomacy (or board games in general) could be a cool cruise. Of course the nerdy/geeky guys would outnumber the women 20 to 1.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
16 Jun 11 UTC
Yeah, why would we want that?
That's the only criticism of Diplomacy (and chess) that I can find. Both are too male-dominated.
Geofram (130 D(B))
16 Jun 11 UTC
It would be best just to rent a conference room from the cruise, instead of trying to have them plan the whole event. Much cheaper.
Poltergeist (0 DX)

If it is a cruise I highly recommend Seattle as a starting hub. Go to Canada California, sail around the world :)

Crazyter (1335 D(G))

I am really loving this cruise idea. Perhaps we could leave from Seattle, cruise to Alaska and sightsee by day, diplome by night. ANother cool cruise would be down the Rhine River or such. CHeapest might be the Carribbean. I love to travel-I'll do any of them. I agree that we just need to rent the conference room. So Draug do you ant to google/call the cruise lines and see what we can find? If even 6 other people sign up, and it fits in my schedule, I will definitely go.
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
16 Jun 11 UTC
For me, the idea of a cruise was to have a great venue/room, easy food, and really pack in the diplomacy. I'm thinking three days max, for me, and we play every day. We're either playing diplomacy, eating or sleeping. Sure, maybe there's an hour or two that we schedule our diplomacy around something interesting, but far and away the point would be diplomacy.

If people are interested in a week long cruise where you alternate a day of play and then a day of diplomacy, that's great, but I'll wait for 2013 if that's the case... Or maybe we have a 2012 Dip Cruise and also a 2012 "Boston" sort of event in a city, so people could pick and choose (and those really into it could do both), assuming there is enough intererst for two separate events?
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
16 Jun 11 UTC
day of play = day of vacation = day of excursions
Thucydides (864 D(B))

well if we do cruise it's up to yall on how long it should be but i think it ought to be in the caribbean both because its cheaper and because i am a much bigger fan of it.

A company I used to work for had a small office in Puerto Rico and I got to know the folks as the IT gut. The reason they never vote for independence is they like the US dollar and privileges and the reason they don't vote for statehood is they like not paying Federal Income Tax. So they like the status quo.

They do cruises where you sail around but never make port. A short three day would give us an evening of meet and greet and two full days of play.

just FYI - there is a DC FtF tournament planned for 9/30-10/2. I'm getting the details soon so will post it on the forum. hopefully we can get a webdip contingent there.

Also looking forward to hearing from Wiz on his experience at the Boston Massacre this weekend... wish I could go ;)

What about a trans atlantic cruise. They are longer but usually quite cheap. Then people on both sides of the ocean would only need 1 airfair.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

how cheap?

Never, ever, ever ask me to pause a game again.....ever
As you probably know I don't like pausing, but will do so occassionally when people promise to be back by so and so date. But then somebody else announces that they won't unpause for another week, and there is nothing I can do - and of course the mods won't intervene. Which is all fine, but don't ever expect me to pause again - if you don't like it don't join a game I'm in. /endrant

A Question On Film
Took a Film and Lit class this semester--and it was a lot of fun, one of the msot enjoyable classes I've had while in collage, the material was only so-so, but the atmosphere and folks there were great--and it got me thinking: what "kind" of art would you classify film as? A different kind of theatre? A different, motion-based kind of canvas/physical art? Another kind of medium? It's own category? How should we evaluate film artistically, as it's now such a part of our modern culture?
