What if there were some sort of "ding" when time ran out on turns?
Given that a fair number of people probably CD because they're off surfing the net on other tabs or something, would an audible "ding" at the beginning/end of turns help the problem of CD's?

Another Bullshit Game!
No specifics yet, til it's over. But, AH CD from the beginning, Russia soon there after. My (Italy) draw/cancel vote up from 1901, as was England's. No votes from Germany, France, and no surprise, Turkey.

I understand it's made up point, game on internet. But, the time is real, and the general lack of respect for others -- which is what everyone gets on me about concerning my resign rate -- is the issue. Nietz wanted to win, he wanted the points, he said so himself. Given that stance, he cannot rightly come back and say, "Chill, it's fake points in an internet game..." He took it seriously enough.

I played as France in this game and I can't say I minded Austria's CD as I felt it left the board divided into two camps of three. Russia's was a bit more problematic but as they looked out of it pretty soon anyway, it could have been overlooked.

On a side note, I'm curious why MichiganMan took Mars when you could have bounced Turkey out of Spain, preventing them from taking Portugal as well? The two centers they needed for the win.

For anyone who enjoys playing live games it's not just win at all costs. For me the best part of this site are the live games but the gunboat games can be spoilt because nobody can talk and agree what to do about CDs so why should you have to play another 2+ hours in a game that you have no chance of winning when you get a CD like this. MM is a great supporter and advocate of live games so I empathize with him because the people who run this site know of these 'weaknesses' in the gunboats and despite this issue being raised constantly on the forum I don't feel there are any efforts to improve the gaming experience when the code is available as certain things have been changed on the sister site, and from time to time people offer their coding expertise here. I have no idea why this issue is constantly ignored.
There are a number of issues that have been discussed to improve these games but the failure of the Site Admins to acknowledge this issue or to open a discussion on ways to improve I find very disappointing, is it so perfect it can't be improved !!
MM is a fan of the live game but not a supporter of the site, maybe Kestas could give people who do support the site financially some say in potential improvements going forward, maybe that would encourage more people to pay and that would finance the improvements, we could have a win-win-win situation here, anyone interested ???

MM I totally agree on your point about the time is real, that's why I am serious about dropping out of the game if you think it sucks because of an early CD, especially if you get a majority of powers opting to cancel/draw.

Now if someone drops out because he is getting his ass handed to him. I think that is VERY poor form. However, I'm not going to vote to cancel the game because of that CD. That is definitely part of the game to demoralize someone so much that, if they are a measly quitter, that they quit.

I would guess that a lot of the Austria 1901 CD's are sort of this case. They figured they got their ass handed to them when they drew Austria. Well, those people suck, and I would choose not to play with them if I can help it. That is one time I prefer draws to cancels, so I can see who the person was who wouldn't play because they drew Austria.

Your point about general lack of respect for others is very good too. It sucks when people drop out because they are doing poorly or because they perceive that their draw is poor. However, you may be viewed to be standing upon shaky ground with this point as the general perception I believe is that you yourself frequently drop out, or explode your position on purpose when things happen in the game that don't please you. This might be why people jump all over you when you start one of these threads.

be still my beating heart, Nigee came to my defense :)))

Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))

Simple solution,

If there is a CD in 1901/1902 it only takes 75% vote to cancel the game.
MichiganMan (5121 D)
12 Sep 12 UTC
I like that idea Gen. Lee, but I think the matter should be auto-cancel for CD's in 1901. After that, I agree, there needn't be a majority.
Riphen (198 D)

Then what happens if someone gets a country they dont like and CDs right off the bat.
cspieker (18223 D)
12 Sep 12 UTC
Then everyone gets a little message saying, "XXX dropped out the the game, the waiting period has been extended YY minutes", Or something to that effect.
cspieker (18223 D)
12 Sep 12 UTC
...just like you get when someone drops out during the waiting period.
cspieker (18223 D)
12 Sep 12 UTC
... and it would be cool if they could get a resign on their record, but that wouldn't be necessary if it made the coding more difficult.
cspieker (18223 D)
12 Sep 12 UTC
...and it should be NMR's in Spring 1901, rather than CD's (which take two turns).
Fortress Door (1837 D)
12 Sep 12 UTC
LOL

keep it in one post, cspieker :)
Fortress Door (1837 D)
12 Sep 12 UTC
and Riphen's post is why I am against the auto-cancel. If they make that feature, auto-draw
there should only be autocancels/cancels by majority in spring 1901, even by fall you can have for instance an Austria that is practically dead (Italy in Trieste, Turkey moving on them and Russia in Galicia), otherwise you can have games cancelled that are already developing well in the spirtit of the game/a majority cancelling a game just because they seee 2 powers growing really quickly. I'm really against an autodraw on the basis of if a game needs to be ended because of a cd or something then it is a game that has been ruined and shouldn't count (so should be cancelled), a draw is a game that has been played out to the point that none of the remaining players can win after a good attempt from all parties.
Forgot to add, I think the main problem here is that there are some players that do not play in 'the spirit of the game' (an example of this could be Riphen's example of someone resigning off the bat because they dislike the country), and I think really these players shouldn't be played with/we should strive to avoid them, I doubt there is any perfect solution to all these problems, and with so many different views I think it's understandable why the mods haven't implemented a solution for said problem
cspieker (18223 D)
12 Sep 12 UTC
An auto-cancel, or postponement of a game with at least one country not entering orders in Spring 1901 could be implemented. The moves would not be revealed, and the game would be automatically be sent back to another waiting stage with the remaining players still signed up. At this point those who submitted their moves could choose to leave (they may have other time committments). Optimally, the player(s) with NMR would be resigned, lose points, identified and be prohibited from reentering the game.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

You know what someone needs to do?

Someone needs to create a thread for live game players. Not for live games, we all know that already exists. This thread would be for players that can post "I'm online to play a live game" and we can set up locked live games for people that know what they are doing and don't CD.

It's always funny that there hardly ever CDs in non-live games. I guess people get bored of waiting for 30 minutes before a game starts. Maybe people forget. I've done that.
Nigee makes a great point.

As do many others in this thread, including Michigan Man.

CDs are a real problem on this site, many people discuss, brainstorm and offer suggestions and solutions on the problem. They are always ignored.

If you ever have the chance wander over to vdiplomacy. They have implemented tons of really, really great features over there. I wonder if these great things will ever be implemented on to webdiplomacy. They have something called a Reliability rating assigned to each player, you can set in the game options what the minimum rating is needed to join. Also, a turn 1 NMR causes an auto-CD and the game to be extended. This CD is then factored into the players record.

Again, I wonder why webdiplomacy makes no efforts to change or improve in areas like this. I have played here for 3 or 4 years, and I am not sure if live games have ever changed. This is no solution.

Zmaj also made a good point about the cheating which is being ignored.......

Nietsche always does this. One time I was forced to hold a 1 centre Russia against him after he was the beneficiary of a French CD. Refused to take the draw and wanted to take down Austria too. I was probably on the losing end of a F/R vs E/G battle, so I won't complain.
