So I was reading the Dutch news and it said that yesterday, the American Dept. of Defense placed a call to the reverend who was organizing these Quran book burnings last year to ask him to stop doing that. So I googled it.

I'm a relative newcomer to football (only really been watching the last 3-4 seasons). I live in the Chicagoland area so I know that the Bears/Packers rivalry is among one of the greatest. What are the other (in)famous rivalries along the same lines?

NFL PICK 'EM RETURNS! :) (Week 1!)
Same as last year, very simple, pick the winners in each game for Week 1 before kickoff of the 1pm EST games tomorrow...and there are some FUN matchups!
Bills/Jets in a battle between AFC Wild Card hopefuls! The 49ers/Packers revive their glory days rivalry! RGIII debuts vs. the Saints! The Broncos and Steelers rematch with Peyton at QB! A double-header for MNF! PICK 'EM!
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
09 Sep 12 UTC
And we'll track the scoring again throughout the season...so...

Week 1, Obi's Picks:

IND@CHI: The BEARS take it easily, despite a decent rookie showing by Luck
PHI@CLE: The EAGLES win easily as well, making Cleveland fans why they even bother...
STL@DET: The LIONS get a win, and they'll need all they can get in the tough NFC North
MIA@HOU: The TEXANS also take an easy one.
ATL@KC:On a hunch, the CHIEFS in an upset, I think Atlanta will under-perform this year
JAC@MIN: In maybe the worst game on this week, the VIKINGS get a win, Peterson or no
WAS@NO: Tempting to take an RGIII upset, but I'll still pick the SAINTS here
BUF@NYJ: Sometimes two heads--or QBs--aren't better than one; the BILLS in a mini-upset
NE@TEN: The PATRIOTS win. That is all.
SEA@ARI: In a year or two the SEA could might challenge my Niners...SEAHAWKS win
SF@GB: Not even a chance I'm picking against my guys in what should be a great one--49ERS BABY, YEAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! WOOO! 4EVER FAITHFUL! ...Ahem...
CAR@TB: The PANTHERS begin their bid for a Wild Card run with a win over Tampa
PIT@DEN: Peyton will perform well, but Pittsburgh is better and seeking revenge--STEELERS
CIN@BAL: Tempting to go with the upset pick here as well, but I'll take the RAVENS
SD@OAK: If they can just figure out their QB issues, Oakland might have a shot...the RAIDERS in a very sloppily-played, penalty-heavy contest
akilies (861 D)
09 Sep 12 UTC
IND@CHI: Da bears
PHI@CLE: the green birds win it easily
STL@DET: Megatron grabs three td's
MIA@HOU: Texans
ATL@KC: Chiefs win, I wouldnt call it an upset though
JAC@MIN: Jags pull it out against ponder and the petersonless viqueens
WAS@NO: Brees doesnt lose at home, NO in a blowout
BUF@NYJ: Bills win, jets fans chant "TEBOW, TEBOW" in the first quarter after marky mark throws an int
NE@TEN: Pats
SEA@ARI: Russell Wilson leads his flock of gulls to a W
SF@GB: Aaron Rodgers.
CAR@TB: Panthers
PIT@DEN: Pit wins. Broncos fans chant "TEBOW, TEBOW" after a third quarter hit ends peytons season
CIN@BAL: Andy "Red Hair" Dalton leads nati to a win
SD@OAK: San Diego pulls one out of thin air in oakland
Favio (385 D)
09 Sep 12 UTC
IND@CHI: Bears win only bc their defense is better than the colts offense.
PHI@CLE: Hah...no amount of rookies can save the Browns here, even if Vick injures out. PHI
STL@DET: Complete destruction of the Rams, but the TDs are going to be evenly placed between Megatron, Nate Burleson, and Brandon Pettigrew (trying to be like the Saints) DET
MIA@HOU: Maybe the Dolphins should have worked a little harder for Manning....HOU
ATL@KC: Charles is back and will do well, but it won't be enough against Ryan obsessing to be a true passing QB. ATL
JAC@MIN: Ponder grows up a little bit and pulls a win out of his ass, but it will be messy. MIN
WAS@NO: RG3 and Garcon connect a lot, but Saints win by at least two scores.
BUF@NYJ: This game is going to be awful....but now the Jets have their red zone QB in Tebow. Mark could get them into the red zone but always choked there. NYJ wins
NE@TEN: A bad team to start with for the Titans bc they actually had a shot this year at having a winning season. But Gronk, Welker, and Hernandez will all score.
SEA@ARI: SEA
SF@GB: A low scoring game, I predict, but the new packers defense will completely stop Alex Smith. GB 14 - 0
CAR@TB: Freeman finally has a wideout, but the panthers defense knows it. Cam will rush for one TD and pass for 2. CAR
PIT@DEN: There is no way this can be a rematch, bc Tebow isnt there. There is now a QB who can make use of the decent DEN WR corps. With no PIT running game, all Big Ben has is Antonio Brown and Mike Wallace (if he plays the whole game). DEN, 3 TDs to 2 TDs
CIN@BAL: Rice leads the birdies to a victory. BAL
SD@OAK: Rivers will choke and give the Raiders a shot. Hopefully their QB can live up to the task. I say OAK.

And how bout that DAL/NYG game....HAHAHA is all I have to say.

PHI@CLE: EAGLES beat the pathetic browns
STL@DET: LIONS win handily
MIA@HOU: Texans win
ATL@KC: Chiefs suck, FALCONS win
JAC@MIN: VIKINGS win
WAS@NO: SAINTS win easily
BUF@NYJ: BILLS start off the season strong, yet again.
NE@TEN: PATRIOTS
SEA@ARI: Russel Wilson, nuff said. SEAHAWKS
SF@GB: NFC North sweeps week 1, PACKERS
CAR@TB: PANTHERS
PIT@DEN: BRONCOS surprise Steelers, who will fail to make the playoffs.
CIN@BAL: RAVENS in a tight game
SD@OAK: CHARGERS, but only because Palmer is terrible.

PHI@CLE: Eagles…
STL@DET: Lions
MIA@HOU: Texans
ATL@KC: Falcons in a close one
JAC@MIN: I don't want to even pick this game because both teams are so bad, but the Vikings in what might as well be a 2-0 game
WAS@NO: Saints, barely
BUF@NYJ: Bills
NE@TEN: Patriots
SEA@ARI: Seahawks, Russ shines
SF@GB: Pack
CAR@TB: Panthers
PIT@DEN: Steelers, and in a bold move I say offensive shootout
CIN@BAL: Ravens
SD@OAK: Chargers

Ideally the refs won't be throwing any games this week.
IND@CHI: BEARS Tough first test for Luck.
PHI@CLE: EAGLES Wide 9 eats Weeden up. Cle defensive starters back from bounty exile without practice.
STL@DET: LIONS Lions offense is tooo strong
MIA@HOU: TEXANS MIA contains a limited Foster, but can't stop air attack
ATL@KC: FALCONS. Dirk Koetter's aerial offense shreds KC's injured secondary. I wonder if the over/under on Julio Jones TDs is two or three.
JAC@MIN: JAGUARS Jags are underrated.
WAS@NO: SAINTS Nice try RG3, but no contest
BUF@NYJ: BILLS Jets are bad, really bad. Time to call Favre.
NE@TEN: PATRIOTS Patriots are good, really good.
SEA@ARI: SEAHAWKS Russell Wilson's coming out party. Arizona is bad, really bad. Time to call Warner.
SF@GB: PACKERS SF shows some offense, Packers still win.
CAR@TB: PANTHERS Cam to 89, bottom line.
PIT@DEN: STEELERS Peyton will win the NFC west, but not this one.
CIN@BAL: RAVENS Ravens will win the AFC north, starting with this one.
SD@OAK: CHARGERS Two inept teams, Oakland is worse.

No, Bo, look at RGIII early - 11/13, 182 yds, 2td, 158.3 rating and 7 carries for 33 yards.

Even without Garcon's YAC he is 10/12, 94 yds, and a td. still pretty good

CRAP CALL in the Niners/Packers game already...

A GREAT sack by Aldon Smith of Aaron Rodgers, and they penalize him for taking his OWN helmet off.

And a ticky-tack call on a kick return as well.

Not a fan of these replacements refs...taking forever to make calls, and when they finally DO make a call...
Favio (385 D)

I agree obi....that should have been a punt right there. But the niners stopped them anyway...
jmbostwick (2308 D)

Removing Helmets on the Field During Play -- no player may remove his helmet while on the playing field. Doing so will result in a 15-yard Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty. Exceptions are during timeouts and between quarters. (The NFL has done this in an effort to "reduce taunting and overexuberant celebrations" and also "in the name of safety.")

Regardless of the outcome of this game the refs should all be fired. they have missed at least two false starts on SF, they had a miss call on the opening punt, the helmet was coming off already (though he took it off in an agressive manner). the roughing the passer call was also bs, 3 or 4 miss calls on pass interference.

I'm a die hard packer fan but this is bs for both teams

As much as it kills me to say it, the Packers didnt play well enough to win that, and if they had it would have been pretty lucky. But holy shit, I dont think there was a correct call that entire game.

If anything my boy Cobb had a great game, gotta get ready for the thursday night showdown against the bears. Cant go 0-2 against nfc teams to start the season
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
10 Sep 12 UTC
You guys want crappy calls, check out the not-so-offside penalty on the Bears on Luck's first pick. He was nearly in front of Satele on the Colts line. Luck thought he had a free play and they didn't call it.

How about Peyton not getting his 12 man call that he's lived off of forever?

Can you tell I'm a Colts fan?

Ok I'm probably going to be blasted for this, but what is going on with the officials?
jmbostwick (2308 D)
10 Sep 12 UTC
"The National Football League has locked out its officials, opting to use replacement crews instead. The league has pulled these officials from small-college conferences, high schools, and one even came from the Lingerie Football League.... So why are we in this mess? As always, because of money. The league has offered what it says amounts to a 5 to 11 percent increase in salaries while the National Football League Referees Association says that increase would effectively be only 2.8%."

akilies (861 D)

@bo - I saw the blown offsides on lucks int. When I saw he got picked I said "well at least that was a free play" oh wait it wasnt? wtf
The only real upset of the week though so far has been RG3 beating out the Saints. The Broncos game was also questionable, but if Manning was healthy, a win was to be expected....I mean, they have Bailey and Porter as cornerbacks and some good pass rushers. Can't crack that defense without a well balanced offense, which Pittsburgh is not.
Zachattack413 (1231 D)
10 Sep 12 UTC
All I know is, my bears played great, and one bad call didn't cost the colts that game. Got beat on both sides of the ball. Super ready to go into Lambeau, and at least be able to play a close game against the Pack.
I'm gonna go ahead and call the Bears over the Packers. Packers had a shit offensive line and Rodgers was panicking all game.
Zachattack413 (1231 D)
10 Sep 12 UTC
I have to say, though, I was impressed by the Rams today. I honestly thought they were going to pull it out on the Lions for a while.
Yeah, Rams are no pushover anymore.
Zachattack413 (1231 D)
10 Sep 12 UTC
I honestly think the Bears can pull it out. Our defensive line looks studly, our offense looks amazing, and our overall defense is still stellar. I'm just a little worried that Green Bay is gonna come out playing pissed, which never bodes well.
akilies (861 D)
10 Sep 12 UTC
They will be playing pissed and your defense wont have an answer for cobb out of the back field. The pack looked shaky at best against SF but the defense of the 49ers is the best in the league in my opinion. I am looking forward to a great game thursday night.

On a related note, the bears played well, but they were playing the colts (no offense bo, but that defense isnt looking to good)

Stafford couldnt throw a ball correctly till 2 minutes to go, luckily for the lions he got his shit together
Zachattack413 (1231 D)
10 Sep 12 UTC
Haha Cobb is the least of my worries. He'll cough it up at least once during the game. My biggest fear is always that we'll beat ourselves and give away the ball three or four times. As long as we limit our turnovers, we will be just fine.

However, I agree, watching us play the Colts isn't really a fair indicator, but our defense still only gave up fourteen points, and forced four turnovers, and put tons of pressure on Luck. Our defense isn't the issue. Especially since we sat Urlacher the whole second half.
akilies (861 D)
10 Sep 12 UTC
Sorry what I'm saying is the bears defense cant cover all of the packers WR's, and I would say Cobb will be a much bigger issue that you think. Yes, even if you play the great Urlacher the entire game ;)

I'm glad you realize that the Colts aren't a fait indicator, cause most bears fans ive talked to in the last half day believe the bear's defense is the shit after putting pressure on and intercepting a rookie QB.
Zachattack413 (1231 D)
10 Sep 12 UTC
Oh, I still totally believe that the packers are the team to beat in the nfc north and probably the nfc. I just think that Thursday should be a great game.
Leif_Syverson (271 D)
10 Sep 12 UTC
I should have figured I needed to check for this ON sunday morning. No, Thursday and Friday and Saturday were all way too early to expect this to show up...
Favio (385 D)
10 Sep 12 UTC
If the 49ers can stop Rodgers, the Bears D should plug him up too. I'm not a bears fan but i hate the packers more. So the bears offense needs to get their shit together.
akilies (861 D)
13 Sep 12 UTC
Alright so I guess we should make predictions for this week since there is a thursday night game.

Here goes

CHI @ GB - Green Bay gets back in its offensive groove and pulls out a win
KC @ BUF - KC, only cause they sort of played better than the bills
CLE @ CIN - Nati beats instate rival by 10pts
MIN @ IND - Luck wins in his first home game
NO @ CAR - Saints beat Cam by a field goal
HOU @ JAC - Houston crushes the competition
OAK @ MIA - I guess i'll just go with the home team . . .the phins win in ot
ARI @ NE - Tom throws for 325 and 3 td's, pats all day
TB @ NYG - Eli and the Gmen bounce back from the lose to the cowboys
BAL @ PHI - Did you see baltimore take on nati? No way i'm picking the eagles
RGIII @ STL - The rams put on a good fight against the lions, and they get a win against washington
DAL @ SEA - The sea turkeys pull off the upset,
NYJ @ PIT - this looks to be a great game, I'm gonna go with the Jets, they looked great against the bills (hmmm i guess they did only play the bills)
TEN @ SD - SD, I have nothing to say about this game
DET @ SF - With the way SF dismantled the packers (hurts to say that) I cant see the lions coming close. The D is just too good in SF
DEN @ ATL - Manning in a dome . . . well this is a no brainer . . JK, The Matt and Julio show continues

I think that is all of them
Shouldn't we make a new thread for week 2?
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
