Grad school was a great time. Professors are a wacky species. I would wait a few weeks, its possible that your advisor has a lot of administrative shit to get out of the way at the start of term, especially if he/she teaches undergrads

She doesn't teach undergrads but she is the department head.

Does she have scheduled office hours? Show up.

She probably won't have office hours if she isn't teaching. The grad assistant can hopefully be our best friend and provide some guidance. At least, that was my experience. But my experience also involved hearing from my advisor once every three weeks on average...

Some professors are bad with emails, etc. Do you have an office in the department? You should do what you can to hang out around the department; not only will you have better contact with your professors, but they'll also see you as a harder worker. This coming from a grad student who is never in the office.

I would agree with people on the personal touch. I had a professor in grad school who just didn't reply to emails, but I'd see him in the stairway and he would say, "Now, Charlie, about that email ...." People don't become professors, even department chairs, because they are necessarily great administrators.

Also, assuming you are an American masters students and that your institution is a PhD granting one: she probably has a lot on her plate that (to be honest) is more important. I completed my dissertation just as my adviser was becoming department head, and it was a busy busy time for everyone.
