Claims of metagaming
Do people really do this as a tactic? I'm curious because I was just sent a sternly (but politely) worded email regarding such a charge, and I know for a fact that it's baseless, so either someone is a bit precious about being ganged up on, or they're using it to gain some sort of advantage in a game.

Need a mod for this game
Here is the link
http://www.webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=62836#gamePanel

England, Italy, and I (Austria) voted to draw and unpause, however Germany is gone. I don't want to take the win away from Italy, considering he wins the next game, could a mod unpause the game? Germany did not have a chance to win anyway. If anyone did it was England.

Everybody is still alive and I would really appreciate a draw (the name of the game pleases me). Anyways a lot of people left because for some reason WebDip went down.

Hey, mods, I kinda made a big mistake...
I signed up for a live game as the last player (can't leave) thinking it was starting in 18 minutes. It's starting in 18 hours. I am 99% sure I won't be here for it. Is there any recourse?

This is getting ridiculous...
gameID=43762 We started with 170 pot, we have 344 now. I don't know why people join for one phase and never come back, but it is getting a bit silly having a new India, Pacific Russia and Antarctica every second week.

Happy Canada Day!
Dearest WebD people, wishing you a happy Canada Day regardless of your nationality (although I know there are a few of us here). It's a beautiful, sunny day here in Ottawa...and I invited Will and Kate over to my house party tonight, but still haven't heard back from them. Hope you all have a great day!

webDip F2F 2012
So, I was going to wait a month to talk about this, but, honestly, I'm just too excited. So, put your name and where in the *world* you're willing to travel, so we can pick our next destination. This is just to get a general impression of where the most activity is.

Cincinnati to Philadelphia straight through just stopping to grab McDonald's to go, get Haas, and use restroom. Also did Cincinnati to Madison Wisconsin. Would have been straight through but the mother in law came along and insisted on stopping for a real lunch.

Yes, 1000 miles is about my limit. If there is a place that is good for families, I would like to come with them and then play. For timing (I don't know how school schedules work) but what about the week before Memorial day? Usually things are a little cheaper then.

I do Blacksburg (SW Virginia) to Toronto in 9 hours, but we split the driving shifts three ways.

i'm down for pretty much anything in the US or Canada.

I would nominate NoVa, DC, or Baltimore as a location. its not as idylic as Boston or... umm... St. Louis, but a great ftf community that can back us up with extra players.

also - on the same note, after boston, i'm inspired to go to the regularly scheduled october ftf tourney in DC... would be great to have a web-dip contingent there I think.
Geofram (130 D(B))
15 Jun 11 UTC
One of the best things about Boston was our location, that backdrop was perfect. I think there's a lot of perfect countryside places to play in NoVa, but we're unlikely to afford anything "nice" inside DC.

I can almost promise that I'll be in DC for the tournament. You're talking about Tempest right? The PTKS site is so out of date, do you have information about this year's?

I once drove from Oregon to Minnesota straight through, 24 hours, I only stopped the three times my tank was on empty. It helped that in the middle of the night I honestly thought I was being chased by a van full of "angry foreigners" that wanted to kill me for cutting them off when they didn't move out of my way. One of their headlights was out so I knew they were right behind me for hours, good way for the time to pass and not fall asleep.

I once drove straight through from Oregon to Minnesota, 24 hour drive, I just stopped the three times my tank was on empty. The main reason I made it that long was that I honestly thought a van full of "angry foreigners" wanted to kill me after I cut them off for not moving out of my way, it was about 2am and one of their headlights was out so I knew they were behind me for hours, I was speeding like crazy praying a cop would pull me over and save my sorry ass! ;-)

Draugnar (0 DX)
15 Jun 11 UTC
You want to make good time? PA Turnpike at 134 in a LeBaron GTC with the top down. Not a cop in sight so I floored it. The LeBaron topped out at 134. I couldn't squeeze any more out of here. That was the fastest I had ever driven until I bought my Corvette.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

Haha no no no drive in New Mexico.... if you go under 90 you're basically a granny out on those highways. One car sighted per 100 miles usually.

90 is too fast for me, especially when it's late at night and I'm delusional...

Crazyter, I was thinking St. Louis in October of 2012 for the next WebDip F2F, not this October...

FTR - We started taking money for Boston F2F in December or January, a full six months ahead of time...

@MM

Yeah, and hellalt had started the first thread that got the ball rolling easily 6 months before that.

Hopefully, now that we've done it once, it won't actually take that long to do a second time.

Also, people like Oct better than June?
MadMarx (36299 D(G))

arrrrg is it that hard to start a tournament in Europe?
Geofram (130 D(B))
15 Jun 11 UTC
No. It's not hard. It's probably even easier than it is in the states. But someone in Europe needs to be asking these questions and making plans, not someone that lives in the states.
Geofram (130 D(B))
15 Jun 11 UTC
Also, judging by our map, the best bet for a euro-FtF webDip style is the UK.

Crazyter (1335 D(G))
16 Jun 11 UTC
@heallalt-Thanks for suggesting this idea. You are the one we should credit with starting the whole thing. I've been wanting to travel to Greece. How about you set up a tourney there and I'll help any way I can?
Crazyter (1335 D(G))
16 Jun 11 UTC
@ab we should find a bargain price 7-day cruise. 3 of the days we'll play Dip and sightsee the other days.

Never, ever, ever ask me to pause a game again.....ever
As you probably know I don't like pausing, but will do so occassionally when people promise to be back by so and so date. But then somebody else announces that they won't unpause for another week, and there is nothing I can do - and of course the mods won't intervene. Which is all fine, but don't ever expect me to pause again - if you don't like it don't join a game I'm in. /endrant

A Question On Film
Took a Film and Lit class this semester--and it was a lot of fun, one of the msot enjoyable classes I've had while in collage, the material was only so-so, but the atmosphere and folks there were great--and it got me thinking: what "kind" of art would you classify film as? A different kind of theatre? A different, motion-based kind of canvas/physical art? Another kind of medium? It's own category? How should we evaluate film artistically, as it's now such a part of our modern culture?
