roka -- if some new function show up I may or may not enjoy it and use it. I have used mute (don't anymore...it's childish...imo) but I never for a second thought the site would die without it.

Lots of people have LOTS of "great" ideas...the world is full of them. What is severly lacks is the idea-makers that actually want to implement their own ideas. You are just another whining voice in the crowd at this point. Dreaming is all fine and dandy...action impresses.

All Hail Kestas! Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah!

@Jamie, Yes, I'm a member of that forum
@uclabb, no problem at all

krellin showed (in the other thread) the perfect example what I'm speaking about. Just becuase someone finds a feature useless, or just because he wouldn't use it (I've never muted anyone or any thread for eg, but I don't think it's useless) it doesn't mean it isn't useful. But rather than trying to understand why a proposed feature is good, he immidiately jumps on poort guy telling he is a moron why he is incapable of keeping in mind he has to move. (After 3 years break, which obviously turns off your reflex to look at the site daily)

krellin is just a stupid guy, who instead of thinking talks first, and people like him make me think this community doesn't want to improve in any aspect. Neither deserves any effort to be put into to make it better.

These guys are the perfect examples why I don't want to propose anything anymore. No way any ideas can put into action, because some ultra-conservative IQ fighter thinks it's a useless feature and trolls the thread before it could be discussed.
rokakoma (19138 D)
08 Oct 12 UTC
@krellin, you stupid fuck, you still don't understand, I want to discuss features before implementing to make it "community-approved" before. But jerks like you kill that effort, taking away the chance to discuss a feature and design it properly before it's put into development.

blacklist, so people I blacklist can't join games I created.

auto-disband (if in retreat phase there's no ther choice but to disband all your unit which you can order, they get disbanded)
*** DOES NOT ALLOW PEOPLE TO UTILIZE THEIR FULL TIME FRAME IF THEY SO CHOOSE. VIOLATES PRINCIPLE OF GAME, IF NOT HE RULES. eVEN THOUGH I ONLY HAVE ONE RETREAT I MAY NEED THAT TIME FOR FUTRUE NEGOTIATIONS. IT **IS** DIPLOMACY AFTER ALL, NOT INTENDED TO BE A SPEEDY GAME***
-
auto-disband when no SC is left, so you are defeated.
*** MIGHT BE NICE...HARDLY SOMETHING TO MAKE PEOPLE LEAVE. Players with INTEGRITY disband anyway....***

auto-retreat (optional switch) to retreat the unit when there's only 1 place to go to, and you know you don't want to disband. You could turn on the switch in the phase, so others don't wait for you.
-***DOES NOT ALLOW PEOPLE TO UTILIZE THEIR FULL TIME FRAME IF THEY SO CHOOSE. VIOLATES PRINCIPLE OF GAME, IF NOT HE RULES ***

automatic unpause after 10 times the phase length, so games don't stuck in, mods don't have to take care about that one
*** IF ANYTHING SHOULD BE USER DEFINED, BUT *NOT* A PROBLEM FOR MOST PEOPLE. YOU DO NOT *HAVE* TO GRANT PAUSES...I DON'T...UNLESS IT IS AGREED UPON PRIOR TO GAME START, IN WHICH CASE MODS WILL UNPAUSE PER AGREEMENT. HARDLY A GAME KILLER. NICE TO HAVE, SO IS A CADDILAC. 3-4 minutes live games to be able to be chosen, not just 5 mins.

-
half long build and retreats phase in live games, because those need far less time to think over
***UH....JUST STUPID....BUILD TIME IS PLANNING TIME...UNLESS YOU ARE A HACK***
-
no-show option whether you've entered orders or not, so other, who are online at phase turn don't see you will NMR and they won't change orders last second, while other won't, because they are not online.

-
graphical representation of your orders, reducing number of misorders
***WHY? UNNECESSARY. IRL THIS IS A BOARD GAME WITH NO SUCH THING AS GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATIONS. IN FACT, SCREWED UP ORDERS ARE INTENTIONALLY A PART OF THE ORIGINAL GAME. BAD IDEA...AGAINST SPIRIT OF THE ORIGINAL BOARD GAME****
-
waring if there's an inonsistency among orders (eg you support move a unit which is actually not moving), so misorder would be reduced
****SEE ABOVE....YOU MUST SUCK AS A PLAYER....****
-
reparing the bug at grabbing the 18th SC in autumn, because no retreats happen after, so you win, even though a dislodged unit is able to retreat to one of your SCs, making you have a count of 17 only. But now, it's enough if you get it before retreats
***WOW...ONE GOOD POINT...AMAZING...***
-
having game master, who can pause/unpause a game, even though it's no-messaging.
****AND YOU ARE WILLING TO **PAY** FOR THE GAME MASTER? IT'S A FREE GAME. WE HAVE GAME MASTERS...THEY ARE THE MODS WHO EXTREMELY GFRACIOUSLY VOLUNTEER THEIR TIME***

@krellin: your answers clearly show you really don't know PEOPLE and this site.

I don't answer for each because this thread is not for this, but just to show you an example we had a 7 page long discussions about blacklists in threadID=919900, because it's not that simple as you think. But clearly you are just retarded if you think you know the answer for everything, and if you think you can think over every aspect in 1 line, which took 7 pages for this community.

You are just dumb. That explains all...

Alderian (2425 D(S))

@rokakoma, to some extent, it helps to not give much credence to those who "shoot down" without good arguments.

I understand being discouraged by such people but also by the fact that there are seemingly a number of little things that could make this site better that aren't going anywhere. But please don't be. If you post something here to get some feedback and then have a more polished idea, at that point I suggest posting it on the ideas board on the dev board.

I'm a computer programmer by trade, although with little php experience. But I have had some minor bug fixes on the profile page included into the current webdip code and therefore also in the vdip code. I've also submitted several enhancements of which one has been accepted into the vdip code but not yet webdip.

Changes to the webdip code are currently stalled while kestas works on rewritting large chunks in his spare time. This has been a long process and I don't know where it stands at this point. I hope once he has this done, we'll be able to do more small enhancements.
krellin (80 DX)
08 Oct 12 UTC
I did CAPS to differentiate my answers from yours, since I was editing within your post. It's a technique, dumbass. Maybe we need a new feature so I can post in new pretty colors!!! GET ON THAT will you?

Actually, I provided *specific* arguments for each suggestion I shot down. You suggestions are infantile and in some cases against the spirit, if not the rules, of the game.

You are asking people to give their time to you FOR FREE...for things that are hardly any use to the game. Good god, quit your bitching.

"...while kestas works on rewritting large chunks in his spare time..."

What the fuck don't you understand? This is a FREE site...and new code is done FOR FREE. You bitching because you don't have enough functionality just makes you an asshole.

@Jamiet: as i said I've never muted anyone, I just don't feel the need.

@alderian, thx for the kind words, I know PHP very well, I'm a computer engineer, and as I said, about blacklists I made a post exactly in the ideas board with linking the thread here about that one.

I'm just tired, really, because I hate when people without even trying to understand different opinions and needs of players simply troll a thread because they think their shit doesn't stink.

Anyway, I have games going on for about 2 more weeks, until I manage to live with it, after it's not my business anymore.

"krellin is just a stupid guy, who instead of thinking talks first, and people like him make me think this community doesn't want to improve in any aspect. Neither deserves any effort to be put into to make it better."

I know what you mean, but: Nobody listens to what krellin says. Just to be clear about that. For example, in the real ("real"?) version of diplomacy, there is not supposed to be communication during the retreat phase.

Most of those suggestions seem like good idea, although I do worry (as mentioned above) about site fragmentation. I don't think there's a problem with site culture or anything like that, which is what you appear to be getting at. Also, don't quit! I really enjoyed Shut Her Down. You should play more full press games.

"...I'm just tired, really, because I hate when people without even trying to understand different opinions and needs of players simply troll a thread because they think their shit doesn't stink..."

You are in the WRONG PLACE FOR THIS DISCUSSION. THAT is the primary problem with you, duhhhhhh....

And you ideas are largely inconsequential and pointless and hardly worth the **VAUABLE FREE TIME** of developers. As in...NOT original ideas...and NOT implemented...meaning NOT worth the FREE TIME of developers.

Good god...go cash your welfare check and whine somewhere else...
rokakoma (19138 D)
08 Oct 12 UTC
@ckroberts: thanks, I actually enjoyed that game, as a matter of fact I'm playing 2 more fullpress currently, both going well, and I enjoy them too. All that said I haven't joined a single game for weeks now, the rest are winding down, all finishing in two weeks probably, except one, but I'm already looking for a replacement into that one.
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 Oct 12 UTC
@roka - I must say that most of these are under consideration. But considering the developers (namely Kestas) aren't paid and have limited time, so changes are slow and prioritized. The 18 SC bug, for example, is a very rare occurance anyhow, so not a high priority. Some of the other features are probably higher on the list. But unless you are a PHP developer willing to dedicate some time (I really need to brush up on my PHP/Perl) then you just have to be patient. Things do happen. I promise.
rokakoma (19138 D)
08 Oct 12 UTC
@Draug: thanks for adding that little information, I wasn't aware of that.

Just a fun fact: I won a solo 2 weeks ago with the 18SC bug and I was actually planning to use that bug, so I deliberately exploited it, not just happened :) (actually I would have won anyway, just 1 round later)
krellin (80 DX)
08 Oct 12 UTC
Btw...Jamie...someone pass this to him...is mad at me and muted me because the last time we were in a discussion I *decimated* his arguments and copy-and-pasting his own owrds back at him to disprove his own points. It was classic...so he got all in a huff and muted me. It was awesome.
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 Oct 12 UTC
Well, exploiting a known b ug intentionally could be argued as against the rules of the site, but this bug typically just shortens a game up anyhow. Not like you wouldn't have gotten the win in another year.
krellin (80 DX)
08 Oct 12 UTC
@roka - weren't aware? Do you not having reading comprehension skills? What Draug said was mentioned above...and most likely multiple times in other forums...So your problem isn't lack of functions....it's lack of reading comprehension skills.
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 Oct 12 UTC
Also, roka, there is a developer's forum for most of your suggestions (code changes to the site). Only the external ones really belong here anyway (like the great discussion we've had on GR and possible ways to improve it).

I don't have a clue what I'm doing with coding and developing and things like that, so Roka, if you can, feel free to help out some in that area. And yeah, fix that bug. I hate it o_O
Al Swearengen (0 DX)
08 Oct 12 UTC
@rokakoma

Sorry that you're unhappy. I understand how you feel.

That being said, I feel that there is some confusion on your part about the way that free software projects operate. Typically, the bottleneck is not that everyone is sitting around waiting for cool ideas to roll in, and they're ready to jump on a new idea. Actually, there is likely a backlog of cool ideas that the developers would probably implement if they actually had the time.

I'm not sure what your coding experience is, but believe me, coding is extremely hard work. What a layperson might imagine can be coded up in about an hour or so, actually can take thirty or forty hours once you factor in play-testing and quality control, etc. The volunteers that work on stuff like that simply don't have ten or fifteen spare hours every week just to pop in cool ideas that you come up with.

If anything, if they're going to spend their vacation coding up some improvements to the game (rather than flying to Hawaii or something), they're probably far more interested in coding ideas that they consider cool rather than ideas that you consider cool.

Suggestion for you, if you don't mind - why don't you try learning php, if you don't know it already, and code up some of the suggestions that you're so interested in?

Hope this helps!!
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@rok

I've actually had detailed conversations with you and others about several of these ideas. Quite frankly, I'm rather annoyed that you are painting this community as one that likes to stifle innovation. The problem, as myself, krellin, and others have said, is that there is no one willing to actually implement these ideas.
Al Swearengen (0 DX)
08 Oct 12 UTC
Oh, and another point, and I am in no way meaning to imply that that this necessarily applies to you, is the fairly common bias that most peeps have that their ideas are absolutely as cool, brilliant and essential as their inventors imagine them to be. For most people, if you would judge that one of your ideas is a nine (on a ten points scale), it's unlikely to really be higher than a seven. It's a very common bias to have.

rokakoma (19138 D)
08 Oct 12 UTC
@Al Swearengen: my problem is not they are not put into action, my problem is, I can't even discuss ideas, because someone trolls it. I understand once they are discussed and agreed on, it take a hell lot of time to implement. What I can't stand is I can't put up an idea to be properly discussed without getting a lot of trolling and trashing how stupid that idea is, or why we don't need it and I'm stupid. It really isn't an environment in which I would contribute to the community in any way.

@abge: I repeat, I have no problem with slow implementation, I have problem with turning down ideas instead of discussing it how it would/should work. Instead of saying it's a bad idea, try saying how to change the idea to be suitable. AFTER we should implement.

I'm sorry to paint this community how I paint it, but currently that's how I feel.

It seems as if we have a new wave of vocal and talented akrellinist thinkers, who certainly seem as willing as I to type on the matter, albeit from the other end--so, care to debate, say, 2-4 akrellinists vs. the same # of Krellinists, on a thread w/ a neutral moderator, we each give an opening statement in succession (say, 500-1000 words or less), one rebuttal per person, and then open it up for questions, side with the most +1s for their comments "wins?"
