Obama Publicly Supports Same-Sex Marriage

Well, it IS an election year...nevertheless, not exactly a great vote-winner in states he won in 2008, necessarily...so--thoughts (both on Obama's backing it, the issue, and what impact this may have on the 2012 race?)

Presidential elections in France
Vote here!

Sarkozy or Hollande? Who would be the best for France? For Europe? For the world?

"Anyway Chirac himself apparently didn't think that defeating Sarkozy would lead to his coalition falling apart, considering he endorsed Hollande, calling him a 'true statesman'."

Yeah, Chirac endorsed him because Hollande is probably the better person to lead France. Chirac's a scumbag too, but it's certainly possible that he put aside cynical political interests for the good of the country, especially since he's retired.

The UMP exists to win presidential elections. It's a cobbling together of the disparate forces of the non-crazy French right. Now that they've lost it's possible that there's a split back to the RPR-UDF divide, or at least a damaging civil war for the party's soul. In either case the newly energized NF can position itself as serious opposition force, especially if it does well in legislative elections coming up. That's bad.

"And if the PS are 'pinkos', I'm an astronaut. The Parti Socialiste abandoned any inkling of socialism long ago in the Mitterand years."

Maybe you don't know what pinko means. It doesn't mean the sort of socialism you support. It means things like, oh, a 75% income tax.

"But it says something that Redhouse & Invictus freak out even if a generic center-left politician wins office. What exactly impressed you about Sarkozy? His repeal of the sexual harassment laws? His continual race-baiting whenever his popularity sagged? His total disregard for the political independence of the French courts?"

Could you misrepresent me more? I'm sad Sarkozy lost only because I think it means the NF will be the biggest winner from that. Hypothetically, if things don't improve under Hollande's term Le Pen could end up winning in 2017 instead of a normal conservative.

Nothing really impressed me about Sarkozy. We almost agree here, Putin33, why pick fights?

Jkz though. The deadlock in Europe will become horrible as a result of Hollande being elected. He rejects austerity which is the basic fiscal policy that Merkel is forcing the Eurozone to adopt.

"He inherited all his problems and did a half decent job at repairing them."

LOL. 10% unemployment, 0 growth. Debt at 90% of GDP.

"The deadlock in Europe will become horrible as a result of Hollande being elected. He rejects austerity which is the basic fiscal policy that Merkel is forcing the Eurozone to adopt."

People act as if the center-right governments which have dominated Europe for some time now have done anything. The so-called "deadlock" will over soon because Merkel is going to find herself out of a job soon enough.

It doesn't mean the sort of socialism you support. It means things like, oh, a 75% income tax."

Hollande has vowed to abide by the European stability pact and pay back the banks. He called for massive yearly budget cuts and indexing wage increases to French economic growth.

"LOL. 10% unemployment, 0 growth. Debt at 90% of GDP. "
10% unemployment, now compare that to Italy, Spain, Portugal or Greece...

"0 growth":
France GDP change:
2009: -2.73%
2010: 1.48%
2011: 1.5%
its going up, aka he was fixing the problem

Debt at 90% of GDP:
http://www.economist.com/blogs/graphicdetail/2012/04/daily-chart-6
Its a hell of a lot better then many countries.

A fail to see how the statistics you provided bare any relevance to inheriting problems.
Putin33 (111 D)
07 May 12 UTC
Italian unemployment is roughly the same as France, if not lower. France should be one of the strongest economies.

"its going up, aka he was fixing the problem"

For 2011 Q3 growth was 0.3%; Q4 was 0.2%.

http://www.insee.fr/en/themes/info-rapide.asp?id=28

When Sarkozy came to power debt to gdp ratio was 64%.

Fasces349 (0 DX)
07 May 12 UTC
Ok Putin: When Obama came to power the debt to gdp ratio was 67% now its 100%
Greece in 2007 was 103%, now its 160%.
etc. etc.

The 2008 financial crisis was the worst since the great depression, the governmetns were forced to run massive losses that one year.

On top of that, your now admitting that Obama is 100% responsible for the current debt crisis, which most people on the left blame Bush for.
Putin33 (111 D)
07 May 12 UTC
Fasces, you say the crisis began in 2008. What year did Obama take office? Does he have time traveling powers? Is he so powerful he can cause things that occurred prior to Jan. 20, 2009? He did cause WWII too?

You claimed Sarkozy was 'fixing' the situation. Where is the evidence for that? 1% growth instead of contraction? You sole case for Sarkozy having 'fixed' France is that France is not in a depression, or your claiming that it is 'not as bad' as smaller countries.

Spain is really bad example for you, because prior to the crisis Spain was running surpluses and its debt to gdp ratio was very low. It's clear Spain itself had nothing to do with the crisis which hit it.
Dys Claimer (116 D)
07 May 12 UTC
Nobody is 100% responsible for it. There's obviously plenty of blame to go around.
Putin33 (111 D)
07 May 12 UTC
"When Obama came to power the debt to gdp ratio was 67% now its 100%"

That was already hitting near 90% by the end of 2009, before Obama implemented any budgets. Unlike Sarkozy, Obama actually reduced unemployment. Unlike Sarkozy, growth in the economy has increased by more than a snail's pace. If you think rightwing austerity policies work, just look at the UK.

I thought Sarkozy was an idiot for pushing the entire anti-immigration/protectionism garbage (which was a really obvious political ploy towards "French values") but it is amazing how much of the popular vote he was able to get compared to his position earlier in the year. From what I've read Le Pen's moderations to her party's platform (i.e. making it not fascist, etc. unlike under her father) is designed to be enough to the point where she hopes to overcome UMP as the primary right-wing party in France. Personally I'm more interested and morbidly excited by the diverse parties elected in Greece ranging from communist/far-left to laughably fascist.

Invictus (240 D)
08 May 12 UTC
So I guess jpgedsox also had a chicken little routine?

It's simple fact that the NF is now a big player in French politics. With the UMP at least headed for civil war in the wake of Sarkozy's defeat the NF is poised to continue to do well, maybe even lead to a Le Pen victory in 2017 if circumstances overtake Hollande (as they very well might). Is this really a position to dismiss out of hand?

I hereby declare that if, as fasces and others argue, all the rich french people will move to the US; then I will support lower taxes for the rich in the UK.

Will anyone who supports lower taxes for the rich make a similar commitment to revise their opinions if France does not suffer an exudus?
orathaic (1009 D(B))

'Europe is a sinking ship'?

Lack of confidence in the banks ability to repay (the value of private debt) lead to a banking guarentee - transfering the lack of confidence to governments ability to repay (the value of public debt) - meaning less was invested in governments - austerity measures may infact force several new changes of government, but so far none of the new governments have taken a new direction, nor have any previous government leader been held to have mismanged public funds (except iceland, but they're not in the eurozone)

Lack of confidence that you will be paid next week makes people hold off on spending this week to ensure they can afford what they need next week - this slows the entire economy. This will eventually recover, it always has, with or without the single currency; Europe will make a comeback - which doesn't sound like a sinking ship to me...

I do think Europe is a sinking ship, except I think it's sinking at a very slow rate. We can still come out rich like Tettleton.

"So I guess jpgedsox also had a chicken little routine?"

Not really no. He said the UMP did better than expected & Le Pen *hopes* to surpass the UMP.

All this talk of 'civil war', the same was said about the PS. Le Pen is at most going to get 15% of the parliamentary vote. The NF did much better in 2002, and the doomsday scenario never materialized.

The Greek elections are interesting. I'm very proud of the KKE.

there was a third K, and I did a literal spit-take (albeit assisted with this damn sinus infection). suffice to say it was surprising for a few seconds
Octavious (2701 D)

The Greek elections are very interesting. 149 seats and just over 30% of the vote going to the pro-austerity old firm parties, 130 seats and just over 40% of the vote (probably over 50% if you include the votes for parties that didn't get seats) going to the anti-austerity parties, and an amusing 21 seats going to the Nazis.

Everyone refuses point blank to talk to the Nazis on principle, so no one can form a government. What a delightful mess! Who'd have imagined that the extra 50 bonus seats for the largest party, designed as an instrument to aid the creation of stable governments, would create such damaging chaos?

Yet Another Rule Clarification
1. If you attempt to move to a square occupied by your own unit that is supporting another unit do you cut off support?
2. If you support a move to a square occupied by your own unit that you hope will move and an opposition unit attacks the same square without support do you win the square and dislodge your own unit?

I think the answer to both is "no" but I want to be sure.

What goes on in the North (A Gunboat's tale)
As England, sometimes it can be quite mind numbing in a Gunboat to watch a powerful Turkey or Austria have a field day with inept adverseries all around. The reason why its so irritating is because often France, Germany and England waste many good years battling for ground to retake or steal a lone center like Belgium, Sweden, Holland, Denmark, Brest, Liverpool ect ect.
