What the FUCK, Zmaj?

Not only is that despicable, winning because of everyone going into CD, dragging the game out for an eternity, but you also could have won for about 6 years and you just kept moving along as slowly as possible. Why?

I wish Turkey and Russia had the patience to stay and stalemate you.
Vaftrudner (2533 D)
10 May 12 UTC
But I'm mostly mad at MichiganMan, even though I'll make sure to avoid Zmaj in the future. He's the one who truly destroyed that game. And it's not the first one. Resigned: 70 ( 9% )

Why do you even join live games?

Zmaj bitches and moans when someone else wins at the expense of a CD, but when it's his turn to shit or get off the pot, he's no better than the average CD moron.
Zmaj (215 D(B))

I know, I know, I'm super slow. I'm still very insecure in endgames so I must go slowly.

That aside, I'm pretty satisfied with myself. I played France. In the early years, I survived German onslaughts and managed to take an English center. Germany played the tug of war with Belgium for a while, then England came and took Portugal. I managed to expel both of them and started feeling more secure when Germany took Burgundy and Gascony in 1908! It was the crucial point of the game for me. I could have died that year, but Russia took the opportunity to advance on Germany and I somehow managed to regain mainland France by 1911.

Since Italy was still occupied with Turkey, I turned my attention to England. It so happened that England left that year. Too bad, but I wouldn't say it was unfair to grab the opportunity - Russia and Germany were both there and could have taken something, but they decided to kill each other instead.

The long endgame, from 1912 to 1926, was my slow advance from the west. To my credit, I was the only one not to put the "Draw" tag when I still had only 8 units. In other words, the other powers saw that I was going for a solo ever since I got 8 units and still didn't manage to stop me! They never managed to set up strong stalemate lines, so I won. I'm glad that the competition included some much stronger players.
Vaftrudner (2533 D)
10 May 12 UTC
It's not the most annoying game I've played, and I'm not sure if it's the longest, but it's certainly up there with them. It only lasted so long because Zmaj first played like he didn't want to win, refusing to attack people who went into CD, but he still wouldn't draw. Then after 5-6 years of nothing happening he just seemed to say "fuck it" and took the win.
Zmaj (215 D(B))
10 May 12 UTC
Vaftrudner, you must have noticed that Russia came back two or three times. I felt I had to play as if Russia would appear at any time.
achillies27 (100 D)
10 May 12 UTC
@ Zmaj- HOW CAN YOU BE SATISFIED WITH THAT???
you won because Russia CDed, and AS IF i could have taken englands centers, russia was full-on attacking me.

Zmaj (215 D(B))
10 May 12 UTC
Lol achillies, you could have killed me easily, you know. You just made wrong decisions early in the game. And as I said, I played as if Russia didn't CD. In other words, I would have won anyway.

To be fair, Zmaj has consistently shown a lack of respect for his fellow players in live games, so this isn't anything new.

However, I should congraulate him. Last time he pulled crap like this, he actually *failed* to beat powers who were CDing. So he's getting better, it seems!

Vaftrudner (2533 D)

"I played as if Russia didn't CD. In other words, I would have won anyway."

Maybe, but it's mostly because Russia didn't seem to know what a stalemate line is. It would have been so extremely easy to set up. It's him I want to keelhaul the most. Still, by the time it took you to advance Zmaj, he would have figured it out had he just stayed. You wouldn't have won anyway. You took advantage of CDs and won. That's all. Nothing to feel good about.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))

Just another one to add to the blacklist.

@Zmaj: You can be arrogant and trash talk all you want once you are good (that means winning against good players in games where you don't only win because of CDs).

Until then, please fap to this shallow victory in private.

Zmaj, two of your three wins have had at least two CDs. Plus, the fact it took you 25 years to win a gunboat as France really shows a lack of skill, if anything, to take that long with the best gunboat country.

I just discovered ghost ranking today. I still don't understand how that works, lol... I'm not yet a full-fledged maniac like you, Tom. You should look for bigger fish to fry, or just wait till I am better than you.

CSteinhardt (9560 D(B))

@Zmaj: What I do is to avoid every game you advertise, and request that you avoid games I advertise. If that fails, I'll just start playing 101-point gunboats, knowing that by the time you've played four of them with me, you won't have the points to play a fifth.
Vaftrudner (2533 D)
10 May 12 UTC
Yes Zmaj, I will probably avoid anonymous games from now on, something I should have done a long time ago. I just wasted a lot of hours on this game - although to be fair, I got a lot of coding done during the last 15 years! I've wasted a lot of time before, but this was really one too many. I'll stick to semi-anon games, anonymous with passwords. It's hard to set up live games that way, but I'd rather have no game at all than this crap.

I'm changing the habits of 1k+ players all by my noob self. Zmaj, you're one cool sonofabitch. I do suspect you're all 17 so your habits can't be worth much, but still, it's a good feeling.

Vaftrudner (2533 D)

I'm 24, 1k+ does not necessarily indicate skill (as you can see with MichiganMan), and if you think you did something well, I can't really stop you. Feel free to be happy about it. In the future, if you want to have a swimming pool all to yourself, I recommend that you pee in it. Clearly you've done something great and cool if you have a whole swimming pool to yourself, and managed to scare a ton of strong swimmers away.
cspieker (18223 D)

Man oh man is this a bitchfest! C'mon people, it sucks when people CD. It totally changes the game. But I don't see why Zmaj should have to stop playing to win when someone CD's. Early in the game (like 1901), it's probably good to cancel. But late in the game, keep going. It's part of the game for live games around here unfortunately. If you stopped a game every time someone CD'd you'd finish none.

At any rate, I think if the bitchfest is directed anywhere it should be at the CD'ers, not the guy who chose to push on and win.

And so what if he took forever? And so what if he's happy about it? What is it to you really? Mellow out dudes.

As for these people that CD when they are doing fairly well, I suspect it happens because people haven't budgeted enough time, or shit just comes up.

I think what we ought to do more often is advertise on the live game thread when someone abandons a viable position. That would save a lot of these games. I don't know if that would break some gunboat rule, but if so, there oughta be an exception for that.
Balaran (0 DX)

my sincere apologies for going into civil disorder in the gunboat game fast gunboat-32. I have never ever resigned from a game before but it was nearly 2am here in England and I have work to get up for at 7.00am

I have never seen such reserved and slow play in a game before and despite Russia's frequent NMR's France just didn't make any progress. I don't know how many years the draw flags were set waiting for him to get his win but I was so tired, I lost interest for the first time ever in a game of Dip.
Balaran (0 DX)
10 May 12 UTC
@Zmaj I don't know how you convince yourself that that was a "win". Everyone in the game set the draw flag when England CD'ed and only you had the opportunity to grab his centres. Not forgiveable in my book but then to do the same when Russia (10-11 centre power) did the same???? Was it difficult to destroy all those unsupported armies? People like you are spoiling the enjoyment others take from the game.

@Michigan Man As previously said by others, Why do you bother to play live games when you have ruined so many?

@vaftrudner You are admirable to have stayed to the end in a game that you could not influence at all. I too would have stayed but by 1923 I was just plain knackered and desperately needed sleep more than I needed to find out how long it would take France to win.
cspieker (18223 D)
10 May 12 UTC
Is there a way to resign out of a game other than missing two move turns in a row? That way, if you were in this situation where you needed to leave, you could line up a replacement and then turn over the spot without having the have the country go through two successive NMR's.
Vaftrudner (2533 D)
10 May 12 UTC
cspieker, "Man oh man is this a bitchfest!" " It's part of the game for live games around here unfortunately."

Screw that attitude. If I encounter something I don't like, I'm going to at least TRY to talk people out of it. Maybe a few people read this and understands how much CDing ruins games, how frustrating it can be for other players. Maybe someone won't take advantage of the situation when it happens to them. But I won't just shut up about it and keep playing crappy games. I think I have a valid complaint. It's not just bitching.

"At any rate, I think if the bitchfest is directed anywhere it should be at the CD'ers, not the guy who chose to push on and win."

Which is why I've called them out. But both categories should be ashamed.

"I think what we ought to do more often is advertise on the live game thread when someone abandons a viable position. That would save a lot of these games. I don't know if that would break some gunboat rule, but if so, there oughta be an exception for that."

I would have, but the most important player, Russia, kept coming back and then NMRing again.

"Is there a way to resign out of a game other than missing two move turns in a row?"

It would be easy to code, but I guess kestas hasn't because the last thing we need is to ENCOURAGE leaving. Giving people the option would likely increase the number of resigns and flood the forums with "Hey, take over my doomed position or I'll just ruin this game for everyone lol". I have sat in for people when stuff has come up in live games before, and anyone can PM me if they want a live sitter. I'll reply if I'm online and have the time.
Vaftrudner (2533 D)
10 May 12 UTC
Balaran, I don't blame you and I completely understand. I do, however, recommend joining live games only when you have a LOT of time. I've played live games that have lasted for 6 hours before. But it's not something you expect, and one resign with a valid excuse is not something to be ashamed of. Only when it becomes a pattern.

What goes on in the North (A Gunboat's tale)
As England, sometimes it can be quite mind numbing in a Gunboat to watch a powerful Turkey or Austria have a field day with inept adverseries all around. The reason why its so irritating is because often France, Germany and England waste many good years battling for ground to retake or steal a lone center like Belgium, Sweden, Holland, Denmark, Brest, Liverpool ect ect.
