EOG Statement: France:
I had a reeeally rocky start to this game. When I first looked at the forum in the pregame, the eastern powers were negotiating the divvying up of neutral supplies near them, so I decided to make a start on the west.
I made a strong thematic claim to Belgium and (disingeniously as it turned out) hinted that whoever supported me would get my support. I was actually hoping to start the game with a strong Franco-German alliance and mutilate the English right off the bat.
Buut, things did NOT go as planned.Germany decided they were not my friends, and claimed that Belgium was a British SC, and made a big hubbub about my expansionist tendencies. Meanwhile, Britain claimed that they 'had' to occupy the Channel for self-defense and I figured I was done for.
Germany clearly wanted my head and I thought Britain did as well. But strangely enough, the British player acted as if all they did want was negotiated peace with everyone. With that settled, of course there was no way I could attack Germany.
When Germany moved into Burgundy then, I was ecstatic. I hoped that now I could puruse a righteous war against the Germans with English support. Unfortunately, once again the silly English refused to support and condone attacks if the Germans were sorry. I then decided to occupy the Ruhr to see if I could provoke the Germans into attacking me but regrettably failed again.
It was at this time that Eastern events began affecting me. Earlier on, it was clear that Russia and Turkey were jumping at the bit to carve up Austria. I was feeling a little worried about a successful juggernaught in the early game so I tried putting pressure on Italy and others to keep Austria safe.
Can I add at this point that the Italian player was really weird?
Anyway, at this point I decided that if offensives in the west weren't going to work for the time being I better try my luck in the Med. I saw that Turkey and Austria were looking hungrily at Italian Greece so I offered to 'help' Italy by moving naval forces in. Luckily they agreed so I was well positoned for a stab or support if things went wrong.
Unfortunately I was also pressured to sign the silly three western triple alliance with England and Germany. It limited my options and threatened Russia, but I was about to leave my self exposed so I felt it was a prudent decision.
We were all very analytical too, so everyone was worried about image. Well, everyone except Italy; 'Band Leader Rossiloni!?'.... What?
Yes, so, the east, perhaps as a result of our alliance also signed a triple alliance. Someone mentioned a seven- way draw but we then noticed Italy was exposed.
So we decided to eat.
I hoped to take both Tunis and Rome, but at that moment I busy with things and France inoppotunely missed a move, allowing the Italians to wreak havoc behind my lines. Fortunately good old England helped me out.
So then, with Italy gone someone again mentioned a draw. I wasn't happy at all with this and I was hoping that now there would be a juggernaugh on Austria when suddenly Russia and Austria attacked Germany.
I was exhuberant. We westerners were outnumbered numerically, but our forces were very well positioned to take out the east, particularly mine. Austria got into Munich briefly, but essentially my two allies pushed back the Austro-Ruskies while I focused on attacking the Turks and taking over Venice (which was Austrian).
Unfortunately the Turkish fleet turned around and progress slowed.
We in the West likely could have taken a few more centres but eventually we would have staelmated.
I, as the early leader and with France exposed to my allies felt especially insecure.
Therefore, when Turkey offered a draw and Germany said he thought it was reasonable I decided to agree. I was still hoping Russia would do something crazy but he did not.
So it was drawn.
Overall, the game and the roleplay were fun, but by jobe it turned into one hell of a stalemate. One persons desire for peace (cough, England, cough) essentially turned the whole board into a locked state.
