I intned to use WebDiplomacy to teach a high school class.
I'm considering using my school's computer labs to allow my students to play web diplomacy. Any pointers as to rule adjustments or things to watch for while I do this?

Here’s info about my pool:

http://webdiplomacy.net/forum.php?viewthread=979340

It costs $5 to enter. If you pay your entry fee via PayPal, and add an “electronic stamp” of $0.50 to any entry fee ($5.50 for one bracket entered, $10.50 for two, etc.), I will donate half of your entry fee, $2.50 to Kestas. PM me per the thread above if interested, and thanks in advance for supporting webDip!

First place is $200, where else can you enter a bracket for $2.50 while making a $2.50 donation to webDip, AND possibly win $200?!

1 in 20 wins money, better than 5%, you don't need to know a thing about college basketball either, all teams are ranked for you!!

I enter four brackets each year, so I'll count that, equal to a $10 donation. Got two other brackets paid for via PayPal, so we're up to $15 so far!
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
18 Mar 13 UTC
As I said, first place always win $200. A few years back I had Bout 100 brackets entered, 2nd place won $100, 3rd got $75 or $80, we had the top ten brackets take home money, so 1 in 10 won money that year, 10% of the entries!

This year I expect we'll have at least 60 brackets entered, which makes for at least $300, and if we get to 61 brackets I will make four winners (so the odds are at least 1 in 20 that you win. In that scenario, the payouts may look something like:

1st - $200
2nd - $50
3rd - $30
4th - $20

Not bad for a $5 entry fee per bracket! Again, no knowledge of NCAA college basketball required, that may even be preferred!!

So I'm confused, you donate half the fee to web dip but the pool winnings are still based on the full fee? plus the 50 cent vig? So you are basically paying out of pocket for people to join your pool? Albeit its an out of pocket donation to webdip?
erist (228 D(B))
19 Mar 13 UTC
(and you do know paypal got rid of fees for person transfers like 3 years ago, right?
Draugnar (0 DX)
19 Mar 13 UTC
@erist - Be careful with paypal. They say no fees, but if you sell off a colelction or have enough sent to you, they will automatically convert your account to a business account without wanring and charge you fees retroactively. I closed my account there and refuse to receive any funds that way any more when they did that to me. I was unemployed and selling off my diecast car lcollection I had buiult up over more than a decade to survive when they socked me with a massive bill. I was already taking a loss because I eneded the money and they took even more from me. No, I don't accept payments from anyone on PayPal anymore. They can go fuck themselves for all I care.
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
19 Mar 13 UTC
Yes, erist, I am donating to webDip out of pocket merely to encourage people to join my pool, all entry fees go into the pool and are paid out as winnings. PayPal charges me 46 cents for $5.50, but it's 61 cents for $10.50, so I just cover whatever I lose there too. Some people mail me a check, but you have to buy a stamp, so the 50 cent "electronic stamp fee" for using PayPal seems reasonable to me. I'm not sure what a vig is, since I don't gamble, but I *lose* money running Marx Madness, every year, and I'm happy to do it!

Over $20 for webDip so far, keep the money coming in, people!

If you send money from your phone as "personal", there is no cost.
Draugnar (0 DX)

No cost to the sender. But there is to the receiver. Business account status doesn't care where the money came from.

Adding new maps
What is the process to get maps added to this site? I'm new here, but I've been a fan of Diplomacy for a while, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that there are maps that can be played other than the standard WW1-Europe map.

Pope Francis and Atheists
In recent comments, Pope Francis called atheists, "precious allies" in their efforts "to defend the dignity of man, in the building of a peaceful coexistence between peoples and in the careful protection of creation." I'm curious what both Catholics and atheists think about these comments.
