I intned to use WebDiplomacy to teach a high school class.
I'm considering using my school's computer labs to allow my students to play web diplomacy. Any pointers as to rule adjustments or things to watch for while I do this?

Could anybody help me with a tech problem?
My computer has been acting up a bit (see my response to this due to 500-character topic rules).

My HP Pavilion dv6-7010us Entertainment PC with a 64-bit Windows 7 OS is great, except for one problem. Occasionally, if I happen to right-click wrong (e.g., on the scroll bar or even sometimes when highlighting text), the left mouse button refuses to work. The keyboard works (hitting Ctrl-Alt-Delete brings up the screen), and so does the right mouse button, but the left one just dies. Restarting the computer fixes it, but that's obviously not desirable. It sometimes happens not at all for a week, and sometimes happens multiple times a day. I've seen no correlation between it and what programmes I'm using (it once happened in Minecraft!), and Norton says that there aren't any viruses on my system. Googling it got nothing for me. Does anybody have some advice on how to fix this?

Given that it happens completely randomly, in various programs, it might be a hardware issue. After it happens, if you plug in an external mouse, does that one work fine?
HeidelbergKid (130 D)

Don't know. I'll need to dig up my external mouse from wherever I had it last and try it. I will get back to you, and thanks ^ ^

I, too, suspect this is a hardware issue. Try with an external mouse and report back.

I decided to use my Wacom Bamboo tablet, an external mouse being unavailable, the last time the error occurred. Closing out of any programmes I had (w/ the keyboard) and going to the desktop, I proceeded to tap the pen on the tablet repeatedly, sometimes pressing one of the pen's buttons, sometimes the other, sometimes both. After a minute or two of this random tapping, it was now the left-click that works and the right-click that doesn't. A minute or two then left to do nothing has the mouse functioning normal again. Could it be a sticky mouse-pad (I sometimes eat apples over the keyboard)? Thanks for any further advice.

If you're getting the same problems with both the internal HP mouse and the external Wacom tablet, it would indicate that the problem is elsewhere. If you're lucky it may be a software problem. You might want to try another external mouse first but here's what I'd try:

1) Uninstall and reinstall of all your mouse drivers including the Windows generic mouse driver. If the drivers have been updated try rolling back to a previous version, If not, download and install the latest drivers.

2) Check the internet to see if there's an update for your BIOS.

3) Reinstall your operating system.

Agreed with Sun.

Before reinstalling your OS, however, I'd suggest you do some googling to see if this is a common problem for your machine.

Also, I wouldn't completely rule out a HW problem. If your touchpad is sticking, it may still interfere with a USB mouse. See if you can completely disable your touchpad via the control panel or in the BIOS. If you can't, open up the computer and disconnect it. If the problem still occurs with a USB mouse, it's a SW problem. If it doesn't occur, it's a HW problem with the touchpad.

UPDATE: I think I've found the cause of the problem. I noticed just now that the right mouse button was a bit "offset" from the left; it turns out there was a crumb(?) beneath it. I've managed to remove it, and the offset is gone. If nothing happens over the next few days, I'll assume that's what caused the problem and it's been solved. (Don't lock yet, just in case it isn't.)

Stop eating over your computer. : )

Turns out a rogue crumb was NOT the cause of the issue. It happened again even after cleaning it out. I tried re-installing the driver, so I'll need to see if that works. This is so frustrating >_<

You might want to try opening up the computer to see if there is a loose connection in the touchpad ribbon.

I wouldn't listen to 2WL's suggestion. He doesn't know what he's talking about.

You do want to open up your computer, but you need to CUT UP any loose connection. It's probably one of these loose connections that's responsible for your mouse acting up.
If that somehow doesn't work, then it's probably your motherboard. It's too dirty. Just gently take it out and wash it thoroughly to make sure there's no dirt and such on it. Make sure to wash both sides.

If you have done all that AND your mouse is still behaving weirdly, then you might want to use can cheese whiz to fill the inside of your CPU. That would ensure that all connections are made properly.

You can thank me by sending some money to #fuckthucy or #domyhwformesinceiamtoosmarttodoitmyself.

You could also try hitting it really hard. Usually works. Yelling and swearing is also recommended.

When you test your external mouse, be sure to disable your touchpad while you do so, rather than letting both devices be active. If you still have a problem when doing so, it's software, but otherwise it could still be the touchpad.

Put a couple of bullets through your computer. Then at least you will know what's wrong with it.

I have a proposal. When someone is banned for being a multi, I think their account should show which account(s) they were a multi of. What does everyone think?

Adding new maps
What is the process to get maps added to this site? I'm new here, but I've been a fan of Diplomacy for a while, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that there are maps that can be played other than the standard WW1-Europe map.

Why Americans Hate the Media
17 year old article, but I feel that a lot of it still rings true today. A long read, but very interesting.

Pope Francis and Atheists
In recent comments, Pope Francis called atheists, "precious allies" in their efforts "to defend the dignity of man, in the building of a peaceful coexistence between peoples and in the careful protection of creation." I'm curious what both Catholics and atheists think about these comments.
