Thoughts, anyone? (I'd almost say it sounds like they're doing the first Trek episode with Kirk, "Where No Man Has Gone Before" and just making Gary Mitchell British...hmmm...)

bill 115
My fa**** teachers at school are on strike. All the fault of the stupid liberals, who caused the mess in canada, the unions who supported them, and now those same unions who oppose them after they decide to "fix" their mistakes, and come up with bill 115. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/windsor/story/2012/11/29/teachers-union-bill-pupatello-mpp-education.html

haha that's it?

why is it called ankara crescent. where did it come from?

can you link me to an example? from your description i feel like we do that all the time

Look at the last person to post thread. In the very begining. I think it's taken off of Mornington Cresent but I could be wrong.

There's a good thread about it there.
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))
05 Dec 12 UTC
It's based on the "Mornington Crescent" game, which I think was on some British late night talk show. I have no idea who originally played it, nor do I really care, but the only rule of the game is to make it to Mornington Crescent (a station on the London Underground) before the other player. Of course, the first player could just say "I move to Mornington Crescent", but that wouldn't be very fucking fun, now would it? I have no idea how "Mornington" became "Ankara," possibly due to the fact that Turkey is a Muslim country, but the point of the game is still the same: be the first to make it to Ankara. However, you want to make it there by the most circuitous means possible and also by adhering to the many rule conventions in existence. N. Stovald's tome on the game is a good resource on this. You can probably find it at a good used bookstore, or perhaps your college library may be able to track down a copy, maybe a first edition if you're lucky.

That is so very outdated though 2nd. Langley has an updated version with a better explanation of the rules and movements n such.
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))
05 Dec 12 UTC
Langley's rules aren't considered canon and should only be consulted in games that do not adhere to the Khartoum Convention of 1948.
Celticfox (100 D(B))
05 Dec 12 UTC
Which hasn't been adhered since the Convention of '72. So Langley is practically canon.. just not in the tradition sense of the game.
TBroadley (178 D)
05 Dec 12 UTC
Stovald is the classic reference, but I prefer MacPherson's '78 treatise to Langley as an introduction for beginners.
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))
05 Dec 12 UTC
If the rules weren't used at the Moncton World Championships this year, they aren't considered canon.
@Thucy, see, now people are just saying weird shit again.

05 Dec 12 UTC
Or giving you guys an example of how to play the game... ;)

@ 2nd But Langley was played at at the World Champs.. just as Stovald was. More then one version was being played. Was quite interesting to watch the differences.
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))
05 Dec 12 UTC
Maybe you saw it if you went there in person. Watching on ESPN Deportes, I didn't see the other version. In any case, it was good to see Jimmy McNulty win this year. His patented "Finnish Fleet Sneak" is unstoppable.
Celticfox (100 D(B))
05 Dec 12 UTC
Unless you know to expect it... sadly no one really thinks he'll pull it at World Champs.
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))
05 Dec 12 UTC
Even if it's expected, it's still unstoppable. It's the Figure Four Leg Lock of Ankara Crescent. It made Bruno Ratzinberger cry at the Austrian Nationals last year.

I was following what they were saying... then they started saying weird shit about rules... and that just makes me want to restate Thucy's original question... What the fuck is Ankara Crescent?
Celticfox (100 D(B))
05 Dec 12 UTC
There's always a way to stop something. Just got to be creative. And damn missed him crying.
ILN (100 D)
05 Dec 12 UTC
i think im getting the gist of this lol
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))
05 Dec 12 UTC
Like I said before, there is only one rule to Ankara Crescent: be the first player to make it to Ankara. It really can't be any more simple. Most games start off with a move by the Moscow SC fleet, but that fleet doesn't always necessarily get there first. You can use various strategies and tactics to block moves, like in regular Diplomacy, but like celticfox said, there's always a way to stop something. Just don't let the other players get to Ankara before you.
Celticfox (100 D(B))
05 Dec 12 UTC
And be mindful of making all the correct stops. Starting back 2-3 countries because you forgot sucks hard time.
ILN (100 D)
05 Dec 12 UTC
i don't think Stovald mentioned that tip in the rule book. but good call. However, if you can make it in three phases to Marseilles then you're good
ILN (100 D)
05 Dec 12 UTC
i probably completely failed at this :(
but heres an example of the game thucydides:

Marseilles? What are you talking about ILN? You can't move there because of the Monaco Embargo.

i thought the monaco embargo was ended at the treaty of sicily, well then, i'l have to go through the danube.

Nice move ILN! Now you're getting it! butterhead, borrow ILN's copy of Stovald and do a little reading, you'll get it in no time.

Eh back to Stovald... think outside of the box a little...
