My two cents:
1. American version of German products and German version of American products taste VERY different. The German Becks tastes very different than the lighter tasting American version. In my opinion the German version is better. On the other hand, things like Coca Cola, candy (Snickers, M&m's, etc) taste a lot duller and less sweet in Germany than in the US. I like the American versions better.
2. America has some excellent beer, especially in craft breweries, it also has some very shitty ones.
3. The average American likes lighter beer than the average German. German beers tend to be fuller, heavier and have more flavor. That can be a good thing or a bad thing, according to what you prefer. I prefer flavor, so all things being equal I would take a German beer over an American one, but I've had many great American beers that are n par or surpass some of the German beers I've tasted.
4. Ultimately it is a matter of personal choice. As far as I've seen, it seems that Americans like blander tastes than other nations (as opposed to say Caribbean cuisine), but at the same time, like sweeter things than others (think German pastries... YUCK!). Knowing this it is no surprise that Coors Light, Bud Light and Miller Light sell so well.
