Roland, a lot of the people on this site are rude/douches/assclowns. I don't know Riphen, so I won't speak to his character, but I'd suggest advertising for password protected games in the forms. You can select exactly who you want to play with, and that type of game draws very high caliber people anyway.

I don't blame you for not wanting to play with him again (although that wouldn't be my choice) but I think leaving the site would be an overreaction. This is the internet, and every place has it's assholes.

The hillarious thing is that he apparently thinks Jews are the only ones on this site being singled out for hate speech. At various points in time, I have seen hateful words spewed forth against: Christians, Atheists, Capitalists, Conservatives, Socialists, White Guys, etc etc etc. Welcome to the real world, Roland.

I don't disagree, Eden, but we're probably in a minority. Common counterargument is that verbal racism was historically a preliminary step for real racial violence, while calling someone stupid fat ginger son-of-a-bitch is merely an inconsequential insult.

From my standpoint, racism actually IS kind of funny. You know why? Someone being a racist is laughably ridiculous. Racism, as a concept, is so absurd to me that I actually am somewhat amused by it. Does this make me a bad person? Privileged, sure, but BAD?
I think you'll find that many share my view these days. Older people who have lived through the civil rights era take these issues way more seriously, and that makes sense. They had to fight in the streets just to be heard. Subsequent generations being so un-racist as to find the concept of actually holding racist views literally funny is, in a way, evidence of the success of the civil rights movement and a continuation of it.

My family is Jewish (I'm not, but that's another can of worms) and I am not offended by Riphen's comments.

All that said, we would all like it if you stayed, but if you would prefer to leave the site over this... good luck with the rest of the internet. I think you'll find it's somewhat similar...

One of the things that I find most attractive about Diplomacy is that there are so few restrictions on what people say to each other in the game. Being able to go up against a complete nutcase is part of the fun, and pretending to be a complete nutcase is a perfectly acceptable strategy. To ban such behavior would take away a great deal of the game's realism too, come to think of it.

Still, it may be no bad thing to enable the creation of games with increased restrictions for people who are easily offended. Not sure how popular they'd be though.

Hmm... I honestly never knew it was common to pretend to be a nutcase. How far are you allowed to go before people start whipping out the restraining order?
