What games involve skills vital to diplomacy.
If one was to hone one's diplo skills by playing other games, what would those games be?

I have already thought of a party game called mafia, obviously there is chess, what else?

Lmao. Figle. That's funny. Um. Lol.

But yeah they can be video games, computer games, internet games, board games, tabletop games, party games, athletic games.... anything really.
Anything involving negotiation. How about Settlers of Catan? I'll trade you two bricks for your ore so you can steal Longest Road from the current points leader (which also happens to give me a city for the win, but who's counting?).
A lot of drinking games. Assuming you don't want to be the waste case. Ride the Bus, specifically is what I'm thinking of but I'm sure it applies further. Harmon Killebrew is another. Kings to an extent depending on your rules.

Was thinking of that too actually I've played that a lot recently. Thanks.

Get on Survivor. That'll teach you negotiation.
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))

Mafia is pretty good for reading who's telling the truth and who's a lying backstabber.
Survivor improves negotiations
Games such as Medieval: Total War (the first disc game with a map like this i can think of) can help improve you tactically too I think.
and Poker, concealing what you are really thinking.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Chess will help you with your tactics, specifically train you to think many moves in advance.

Poker will help you bluff and conceal your emotions.

I honestly think Settlers is a little simplistic to be too helpful.

Mafia can help you lie/detect lies, but there's usually such little information to work with, I'm not sure how helpful it would be.

@Hell: Agreed, total war games are good. I must admit, when playing campaigns I often let it auto-resolve my battles. That way, I play it as two separate games - a general style battle game which is great fun, and an emporer style campaign. That said, its Rome for me (although the bugs are always annoying)
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))
02 Jan 11 UTC
@Fig Yeah I always let it auto resolve my battles too unless I was defending a castle, because I never had the patience and got crushed by their archers in a normal battle. I liked the campaign style anyway, because that was just as tactical as the battles in it

I find this thread very interesting because after having played Diplomacy for quite a few years and then returning to Risk, people get very frustrated when I try to negotiate deals. It's possible to play Risk while thinking in terms of Diplomacy, but you need to play with other 'diplomats' otherwise everyone will try to kill you :P.

Or any other title by Paradox.
@ Fig and Hell: I love the Total War series. I've been hooked on Medieval II. I try never to auto-resolve my games though. It takes a really long time, but it helps with tactics if you have to try to figure out how to beat an army of War elephants or horse archers. I usually end up sitting in my castle or city and waiting for them to try and take it.

@Kaiser: My friends no longer play risk with me, because I am always the one trying to be diplomatic and they want none of that (because I always win). So when we do play, I'm the first out because they team up against me.

i like this thread!

it's been a long long time, but i used to play a game called republic of rome which involves a lot of the same negotiating and backstabbing as diplomacy, but none of the tactics. i'm on the look out to get it again and see if it's as fun as i remember. :)

Here my list of titles I enjoy
Computer games: (In terms of enjoyment)
1. Civilization IV is great (best computer game of all time, lots of strategy, multiplayer requires diplomacy, but mostly empire managing)
2. Hearts of Iron III
3. Rome Total War
4. Tropico 3 (not so much strategy, but still falls under the empire managing games I enjoy)
5. Medieval 2 Total War
6. Hearts of Iron II
7. Sins of a Solar Empire (lacks a good diplomacy tab, but it is a very good strategy game.)

Board games:
1. Imperial 2030 (Really addictive, and requires more strategy and diplomacy then diplomacy.)
2. Imperial (Imperial 2030 but set during world war 1, rather then a fictional world war 3)
3. Diplomacy (I doubt anyone on this site would have played this game ;) )
4. Axis and Allies (no diplomacy in it, but still a really good strategy game)
5. Risk
masters of orion 2: requires a TON of strategy and tactics plays a pretty big part when ur at war. how much diplomacy is required depends on ur racial picks, which in turn depends on ur strategy.
the 2 ends of the spectrum of diplomacy are: a race that is weak in combat in exchange for fast research or strong economy, and a race that is unable to communicate with other players in exchange for increased combat or construction abilities

what do you people think of empire earth II and rome total war: barbarian invasion??
steephie22 (182 D(S))

and i have another question: someone was talking about republic of rome, is it on or offline??
figlesquidge (2131 D)
03 Jan 11 UTC
I never really got into Barbarian Invasion. It's scenario's were great, but I wasn't a fan of adding religion to the campaign map.
That said, at least it gave you a chance of controlling large cities. I always found that after a time, when you'd built all the "make me happy" buildings, the population would still rize and in the end you'd get squalor. In the end, the only method I found to control this was to let it revolt, recapture it then slaughter the population.

Does that make me a bad person? :S

thucydides- i call everybody who is reading this "you people" i'm not english and i don't know really why i use it but i am bad in finding the best word when i need it so my words are always something different :)

@Mongoose - What, like Russia did to Georgia few summers back?
Putin33 (111 D)
03 Jan 11 UTC
Intrigue - Lots of backstabbing in this game
Twilight Struggle - Cold War themed strategy game
Santiago - involves lots of diplomacy/bribery/backstabbing
Race for the Galaxy: Rebel vs Imperium - (other race games do not involve interaction, it's more like everyone trying to build as quickly as possible, but this expansion involves interaction).
Agree with whoever said Settlers of Cataan (and all of its variants), definitely involves diplomacy, although it leaves too much up to chance compared to other games
Puerto Rico - although it does not involve diplomacy or much interaction, is strategic along the same lines as Race
Agricola - Very complex, will hone your strategy skills
Battlestar Gallactica - Lots of diplomacy/strategy/secrecy involved here, just takes forever
Sid Meier's Civilization (board game)
Panzer Blitz/Memoir '44/Command & Colors, or any tactical wargame - Helps little with diplomacy, more with unit placement.
Silent War/Steel Wolves (solitaire war games)

"What, like Russia did to Georgia few summers back"

You mean what Georgia did to S. Ossetia and the Russian peacekeepers?

What webDiplomacy really needs...
I very much miss multilateral negotiations here. Next to global broadcasts and bilateral correspondence, there ought to be the option to adress several (but not all) players at once. It's a very basic and very necessary feature that all Diplomacy judges have. webDiplomacy really needs to up its game on that one.

As some of you recall, I released a series of stats last year, as an unofficial player of the year award, using the data I get for Ghost-Rating.

Here is the 2010 version. (If someone formats it with links by each player's name I would be really grateful)

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Picard And Sisko Argue Ethics--Ends vs. Means!
We started to have a debate about this in the last topical post, so I thought I'd give it the full attention it deserves, since it IS one of greatest dilemmas in all of ethical thought and conduct. And, luckily enough we have two GREAT advocates for the opposing positions: Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Captain Benjamin Sisko! ;) So, as a fun end of the year discussion, if ends DO justify the means, to what extent, and if they DON'T...then what IS justifiable?
