What games involve skills vital to diplomacy.
If one was to hone one's diplo skills by playing other games, what would those games be?

"But the thing is, it *doesn't* stop. Most of the time it just pisses off their enemies even more so that when they get the opportunity they strike harder than before. Peace cannot be forced and Israel is a bully who insists it's their way or the highway. And they do this knowing the US won't do anything real to stop them."

The statistics after the construction of the security fence say otherwise. The west complained and still complains about the Israeli security barrier, and yet attacks in the West Bank are at all time low because of it.

http://www.theisraelproject.org/site/c.hsJPK0PIJpH/b.4717711/k.4A0D/Total_Israeli_Deaths_from_Palestinian_Terrorism_20002008.htm

I know people who claim the source is biased, but can anyone come up with another source which shows that attacks increased or even stayed at the same level?

On the other hand after the Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000, Hizballah immediately commenced their attacks on northern Israel (and the Lebanese 'government' did nothing to stop it). After the withdrawal from Gaza in 2006, Hamas commenced their attacks on Israel.

"it has ever known. Even Netanyahu said so when he was PM circa 1998 or so. There were ZERO suicide bombings in 1999. It was only when the Palestinians realized that Oslo was a sham designed to lull them into a false sense of security while the Israelis built all those Jewish-only settlements and bypass roads throughout the occupied territories that things started to get ugly."

This is incorrect. 120 suicide bombings took place in the years prior to the Second Intifada, from1994-2000. More Israelis were killed by Palestinian terror in the 5 years after Oslo than in the 15 years prior to the agreement.

http://www.jewishmag.com/15mag/oslo/oslo.htm

Here is a list of many which resulted in deaths.

"Bus bomb, Afula. 7 killed. 6 April 1994. Hamas.

Bus bomb in Hadera. 5 killed. 13 April 1994. Hamas.

No5 bus, central Tel-Aviv. 22 killed. 19 October 1994.

Beit Lid traffic junction near Netanya, double bombing. 21 killed. 22 January 1995. Islamic Jihad.

Bus bomb, Ramat Gan, central Israel. 6 killed. 24 July 1995.

Bus bomb in Northern Jerusalem, 4 killed. 21 August 1995.

No18 bus bombed on successive Sundays in central Jerusalem. Total 45 killed. 25 February and 3 March 1996.

Hitchhiking post, Ashkelon. 1 killed. 25 February 1996.

Shopping centre, central Tel-Aviv. 13 killed. 4 March 1996.

Central marketplace, Jerusalem, double-bombing. 16 killed, 178 injured. 30 July 1997.

Pedestrian mall, central Jerusalem, triple bombing. 5 killed, 181 injured.
5 September 1997.

Apropos Café, central Tel-Aviv. 3 killed. March 1999." < - proof that attacks occurred in 1999.

Sorry, the withdrawal took place in 2005, not 2006. The point remains.

"Peace cannot be forced"

Tell that to the Sri Lankans and the Colombians. The only way to defeat an insurgency is to crush it. The French essentially defeated the FLN too, it was only domestic instability that led to Algerian independence.

I'm really sorry for (accidentally) derailing your thread. Nice to see putin has set up a new one to continue the sidetrack though.

I was going to suggest Cluedo is actually quite a good one for the diplomacy side

Thucydides,

All the games @ brettspielwelt - which is a lot. Also thewargamesroom.com. Also there is a Settlers/Carcasonne website that is free and allows multiple humans to play. http://games.asobrain.com/

As I understand it, you want some diplomacy-related games you can play with friends in real life that don't require buying anything?
Indeed, my mind has already assumed you're doing a diplomacy event and want a gap-filler?

yeah its for my diplomacy club on campus, something to do at meetings to hone skills especially those who are new to the game and its.... more difficult aspects.

(such as feelings of alienation for instance)

What webDiplomacy really needs...
I very much miss multilateral negotiations here. Next to global broadcasts and bilateral correspondence, there ought to be the option to adress several (but not all) players at once. It's a very basic and very necessary feature that all Diplomacy judges have. webDiplomacy really needs to up its game on that one.

2010 Player of the Year
As some of you recall, I released a series of stats last year, as an unofficial player of the year award, using the data I get for Ghost-Rating.

Here is the 2010 version. (If someone formats it with links by each player's name I would be really grateful)

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Picard And Sisko Argue Ethics--Ends vs. Means!
We started to have a debate about this in the last topical post, so I thought I'd give it the full attention it deserves, since it IS one of greatest dilemmas in all of ethical thought and conduct. And, luckily enough we have two GREAT advocates for the opposing positions: Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Captain Benjamin Sisko! ;) So, as a fun end of the year discussion, if ends DO justify the means, to what extent, and if they DON'T...then what IS justifiable?
