Looking for a Modern Diplomacy Analysis.
I have never played the variant before but I have been looking at some archived games of it on webdiplomacy recently. I was hoping that people would be willing to share any thoughts on it they have. I would love a country by country analysis.

I've played as Turkey more often than anything else. So I can tell you at least about it right now. It's a decently strong position, and can pick up 3 or 4 Centers in the first Autumn phase. It's especially strong if you have a good relationship with Egypt. Because, unlike in Classic, Turkey is less capable of turtling up the way Britain and Egypt can. With this, your biggest target/threat should be someone to your north. You could do a modified Juggernaut, but it's much easier to stop than in Classic. And Russia stabbing you wouldn't be too hard (looking at you, Jeff Kuta). So I would suggest working with Ukraine and maybe Poland against Russia. Your central ally should be Egypt, though. You two can powerhouse the Mediterranean with you in the North and Egypt dominating the South. (And, yeah, a lot of attributes of Egypt on this map are like Turkey in classic.)
Egypt, being a corner power, has nothing to worry about from the south or east. As such, it has and excellent defensive position, and can better focus its units on whatever nation it chooses, typically Italy or Turkey.

The West meanwhile is extraordinarily tense. You have powerhouses like never before with Italy, Germany, Spain, Britain and France. With no Switzerland DMZ, it gets tough

Italy, France, Ukraine and Russia suck. Others are OK
@Jeff Kuta: I disagree about Italy. Italy is very powerful, in my experience, starting from the first year.

I appreciate all of the responses. Looking at the board, Italy appears to be a monster. I am not sure that I like Spain's position very much.
Spain is essentially forced to attack France. If there is a strong France, Spain is screwed. The position is, however, easily defensible.

He is also confronted with a tricky diplomatic position as far as England goes as well though. If not clever in the early game, I see him getting bottled up very quickly.
Most of the time, Spain and England agree to give Gibraltar to Spain, and Morocco to England.

I was Russia once, and based on this one data point (I soloed), I would say that the corner powers have a bit more leverage since by definition there are more 'internal' countries. This is mitigated slightly with Spain (the new France) by having Gib, but I think Egypt (the new Turkey), Russia (the new Russia), and England (the new England) in general benefit from this board. Some interesting points; No impassible Swiz, Ireland SC, Lapland, and two black seas spaces change it up just as much as having additional countries.
I always considered Russia to be powerful, due to the 5 starting SCs, and Poland and Ukraine (generally weaker countries) surrounding it. What's the general opinion of Modern Russia?

Much more limited in regard to opening, especially compared to Classic Russia.

Germany Italy and Turkey usually get the best first year expansion
Turkey almost always gets a full 4 builds first year.

Russia has no guarantees the first year. Very bad.

Italy, Turkey, and Germany normally have very good first years but then fade. I've found that this variant skews heavily towards the corner powers -- Spain, England, Russia, and (more so than any other) Egypt -- due to the "build anywhere" feature. In classic, corner powers are difficult to eliminate but are also difficult to solo with, since new units take so long to get up to the front lines. In modern, the corner powers do not have this same handicap.

Russia has no guarantees in Classic either, but still does well.

NOOOO

i hate the stereotype that Spain has to attack France. The Spain-France alliance is the easiest to maintain all game

France absolutely should not let Spain have a free pass. As a corner power, Spain is already very strong.

Hello,
I'm new here, never played Diplomacy, doesn't have anyone to play it with IRL so I was wondering if anyone could help me understand the game better or maybe if there's other newcomers, we can create a new game so we all discover how it works together..

How do you randomly select nations in a Face-2-Face game?
I just got an actual Diplomacy board game and am about to play my first Face-2-Face. What are the most common methods for randomly selecting nations? Draw out of a hat? Youngest picks first? Best Franz Ferdinand impression gets Austria?

Ray Tensing Indicted for Murder of Samuel DuBose
http://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/2015/07/29/publish/30830777/

I'm glad Tensing had a body camera on. I'm glad the grand jury indicted him. Unless there's something acutely relevant that's off-camera and missing here, I'll be glad when he gets convicted of murder.
