I played Germany this game, and based on France attacking England in year 1 and taking London, it started nice for me, getting to build 3 in the first year.
After that, it was fairly easy to take the North Sea, and combined with France, we were able to dispatch England fairly quickly.
While this was going on up north, I was concerned about the Turkey/Austria alliance, which was teaming up against Russia. While I certainly didn't care if Russia died, I didn't want it to die to quickly. To this end, I moved an army into Bohemia, and then agreed to support Italy into Vienna. In exchange, Italy would move to Trieste the following year, and I would take Trieste. At the same time, I supported RUssia into Galicia. At this point, I realized that with Italy in Vienna, and Russia in Galicia, I was effectively blocked from any supply centers in Austria. I was also growing increasingly frustrated at Russia, who did not seem particularly thankful that I broke up the Turkey/Austria invasion of his country. So after I tried in vain to convince Russia to move Galicia to Rum, so I could move to Galicia, I invaded Russia instead.
It was also at this point that Turkey STOPPED invading Russia, much to my frustration. Russia was no free to use all his forces to stop me. I did feel a little guilt over leaving Italy stranded in Vienna... We were invading Austria together, but then I left.
I was able to convince Turkey to move back towards Sevastapol, which helped divert Russian forces, so it was easy to complete the invasion of Russia. Russia fought well, and I tip my cap to my vanquished foe, but you were facing more numerous forces.
Spring of 1904 was the toughest set of moves I have ever written. I think I must have written and rewritten them a dozen times, and France never knew how close he came to a stab. He was making no progress against Italy in the south, and with us agreeing to demilitarize England, it was looking like time for a stab. I could have taken his 2 English centers and moved into Burgundy... If I had done this, he would have lost units that round, and the army in Burgundy, plus fresh reinforcements from England could have decimated the French countryside.
Ultimately, I decided not to stab him. I think Italy (whom I still felt guilty for abandoning in Austria) could easily have convinced me to invade France. Just a little push from him would have done the trick. But strangely he was silent.
Similarly, at this point, Austria was silent. He was still intact with his home SCs, plus Serbia and Rum, though he could clearly see German forces off in the distance with nothing to do.
Turkey Austria and Italy decided to ally at this point, against the French and German, but alas it was too late. France was willing to let German fleets help her in the Mediterranean. It was nice, I never had to worry about a stab from the French, because he let me have fleets in English Channel, MAO and WMed. If he stabbed me, I could quickly stab back.
It was very predictable after this point. There was a very late stab of Austria by Turkey, but that was just a grab for additional centers before the game opened. I enjoyed the banter with Turkey throughout this period.
