We have a Trump Thread,so this seems fitting as I believe Russia will be newsworthy for quite a bit. I'll start you guys off: http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/russia-deploys-missile-violating-treaty-and-challenging-trump/ar-AAmVID5?li=BBmkt5R&ocid=spartandhp

Rules Question
It's a bit of a convoluted situation, but I'm actually confused about why WebDip adjudicated the way it did.

I've never made a rules question thread before in all the years I've played Diplomacy. How exciting.

Is this ethical?
Let's say I have a stalemate position, it's DSS, and I can eliminate players without risking anything at all, increasing my share of the pot.
Is it ethical to let those players live?
Does this change if it's anon or not anon?

North Africa & North Atlantic Ocean: The Oddities of the Board.
Not all territories in Diplomacy are created equally. Some are more useful than others. Territories such as North Africa and North Atlantic Ocean are often left vacant, especially at the start of the game. However, can anybody think of a useful and good reason for a player to enter either of these territories? In what situations might either of these territories prove useful?

50 shades of grey violates Geneva Conventions
I think its a shame we are sexualizing and romanticizing torture. I believe that at the time these novels came out; they directly helped normalize waterboarding and guantanamo bay.

I believe that pleasure can be gained from such things, but consent is lacking in 50Shades, and without consent it becomes rape and sexual assault, and probably assault.

But geneva? War crimes? This is a human rights issue.

The only relevant rights are the right to life and liberty, and right for consenting adults to marry.

There is no right to explore your sexuality, or engage in pre-marital sex, or any bdsm activities. But likewise nothing to prevent such exploration (apart from national laws)

I would like to petition we hold a war crimes tribunal against the author Stephanie Meyer. I think there is some valid atrocities depicted within.

Um, the right to explore your own sexuality on your own with out her consenting people is pretty clearly within the Liberty interests. It's not tenable to argue that your have a right to liberty while insisting you don't have liberty to pursue happiness.

I hope you are joking. But I will write this as if you are not.
I have not, nor will, read the books or watch the movies. That being said... not at all war crimes or gitmo level. Did Battle Royal/Hunger Games lead to adults murdering kids in the streets (or on a private island)? Did the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy lead to men being killed for abusing women? Did Iron Man lead to a rise in the playboy arms dealers with family issues? Do numerous people really play GTA and then commit crimes? Do people play Watch Dogs and turn into master hackers? No, no (I think), no (though it would be cool), no, and no. See my point?

Then we have established that a right to something and a license for that thing can coexist. This is also the case for marriage, which is both a basic extension of individual autonomy rights, and a fundamental element of the social order for which legal recognition is very convenient.

morals are an individual's code, ethics are an external code (thanks google!)

so... wouldn't there be a case for each?
Lethologica (203 D)

Brad defined morality as following God's law in another thread. Which has nothing to do with whether or not a right to marry exists, or whether the existence of a right is contingent on the lack of a government license, unless he collapses the distinction between human laws and God's with some natural rights argument, in which case his position is untenable. Whether his usage is accurate is a separate matter.

I think at the moment, bere at webdiplomacy I may be more disliked, unfairly imho, than Dipbro Brainbomb. As to this fifty shades of grey, I've seen a film of that name and was most unimpressed with the way sadism was presented as a normalised, "safe" sexual practice, and that it was the man shown as the dominant person, and the woman as his willing victim. However I also believe that what goes on between consenting adults as far as sex goes, is not for government or church to interfere with. Informed consent is an important consideration.

Capt Brad, interesting snippet of dialogue, from a movie that deals with military training, bastardisation, abuse etc, and a salutory lesson in how bad training & abuse, lack of oversight lead to tragedy.

Ogion, we do not use a certain expelled players name in the forum, so I would suggest you consider using " krellin & he who shall not be named"
"He who shall not be named" threatened legal action against this site over that and other issues.
MajorMitchell (1605 D)
15 Feb 17 UTC
That first comment about who is disliked is poorly expressed, it might be inferred that I think Dipbro Brainbomb should be more disliked than me, which was not my intention. I think a lot of the dislike aimed at either, and both if us is unfair
CAPT Brad (40 DX)
15 Feb 17 UTC
A distinction must be made between ethics and morals, or morality. Every people, even the most uncivilized and uncultured, has its own morality or sum of prescriptions which govern its moral conduct. Nature had so provided that each man establishes for himself a code of moral concepts and principles which are applicable to the details of practical life, without the necessity of awaiting the conclusions of science. Ethics is the scientific or philosophical treatment of morality.

I am not an infallible source of information on the acrimonious fight between that certain person and the Mods & site owners, I was on a "sabbatical" for slightly more than a year when it happened. But that is certainly the impression I was given when I enquired. I think it would be extremely foolish to mention that certain expelled players name to Omnipotent Zultar.
I see it as a way to demonstrate where my loyalties lie, to WebDiplomacy, not to that cork brained clown who behaved so offensively. It's a way of "shunning" that person. We don't mention his former player name. It's a player name that is too much associated with worst types of disgraceful behaviour, imho.

Mm I was not active from 2013-2015 either. I missed the purge. The forum was so toxic when I first joined I just avoided it
orathaic (1009 D(B))
15 Feb 17 UTC
@Brain - i don't think i've taken any breaks, and i don't think the forum has gotten tha much better.

Any purging, that i failed to notice, had the effect of quietening things down a lot, until those people were replaced... And now it is back to its noisey old self.

Not sure about the toxicity levels, because i seem to he able to tolerate them even still.

(Obviously it looks differently for a new comer... But once you're deeply ingrained in the forum, you can tell when some thread will be ignored, or full of comments criticising the OP... Or what kind of thing it is just not ok to say.)

Italy Opening Strategy: Early Attack on France?
Venice goes to Piedmont, Rome goes to Tuscany, and Naples goes to Tyrrhenian Sea. If France moved Marseilles to Spain, he will be forced to take a guess at whether Italy will enter Marseilles or leave it vacant. If Spain re-enters Marseilles, France will have a slow start against Italy. And if Italy gets into Marseilles and Tunis, he will get two builds. Thoughts?

Where'd the new rules come from?
I usually try to stay updated on what people talk about in the forum daily. Recently I haven't been able to and I came back to find that their are new rules regarding how shitty we can be to each other on the forum. I understand that there was a thread that was so bad the mods felt the need to make more rules. Anyone care to tell me what was said that was bad enough to warrant this?

Austro-Hungarian-Turkish Alliance: Just for Fun? Or Turkish Delight?
Turkey and Austria-Hungary work together against Russia, with a passive Italian player. Turkey moves into Bulgaria, Black Sea, and Armenia. And Austria-Hungary moves into Rumania and Galicia. Is this just pure fantasy? Or will Austria-Hungary and Turkey be treating themselves to Turkish delight by the end of it?

gunboat related - grabbing Munich in 1901
I find that a lot of players that start as France would actually try to get Burgundy into Munich in gunboats in Autumn 01. What is the point of that? Germany will have to build armies to get France out again and thus put England in a massively advantaged position.

Thoughts?
