Putin Thread
We have a Trump Thread,so this seems fitting as I believe Russia will be newsworthy for quite a bit. I'll start you guys off: http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/russia-deploys-missile-violating-treaty-and-challenging-trump/ar-AAmVID5?li=BBmkt5R&ocid=spartandhp

Rules Question
It's a bit of a convoluted situation, but I'm actually confused about why WebDip adjudicated the way it did.

I've never made a rules question thread before in all the years I've played Diplomacy. How exciting.

Is this ethical?
Let's say I have a stalemate position, it's DSS, and I can eliminate players without risking anything at all, increasing my share of the pot.
Is it ethical to let those players live?
Does this change if it's anon or not anon?

North Africa & North Atlantic Ocean: The Oddities of the Board.
Not all territories in Diplomacy are created equally. Some are more useful than others. Territories such as North Africa and North Atlantic Ocean are often left vacant, especially at the start of the game. However, can anybody think of a useful and good reason for a player to enter either of these territories? In what situations might either of these territories prove useful?

50 shades of grey violates Geneva Conventions
I think its a shame we are sexualizing and romanticizing torture. I believe that at the time these novels came out; they directly helped normalize waterboarding and guantanamo bay.

Italy Opening Strategy: Early Attack on France?
Venice goes to Piedmont, Rome goes to Tuscany, and Naples goes to Tyrrhenian Sea. If France moved Marseilles to Spain, he will be forced to take a guess at whether Italy will enter Marseilles or leave it vacant. If Spain re-enters Marseilles, France will have a slow start against Italy. And if Italy gets into Marseilles and Tunis, he will get two builds. Thoughts?

Where'd the new rules come from?
I usually try to stay updated on what people talk about in the forum daily. Recently I haven't been able to and I came back to find that their are new rules regarding how shitty we can be to each other on the forum. I understand that there was a thread that was so bad the mods felt the need to make more rules. Anyone care to tell me what was said that was bad enough to warrant this?

St. Petersburg to Findland: Should Russia Ever Make This Move?
The title says it all: is there ever a situation or scenario in which Russia should move his fleet in St. Petersburg (South Coast) to Finland? What kind of diplomatic arrangements need to be made for such a move to occur?

Austro-Hungarian-Turkish Alliance: Just for Fun? Or Turkish Delight?
Turkey and Austria-Hungary work together against Russia, with a passive Italian player. Turkey moves into Bulgaria, Black Sea, and Armenia. And Austria-Hungary moves into Rumania and Galicia. Is this just pure fantasy? Or will Austria-Hungary and Turkey be treating themselves to Turkish delight by the end of it?

The main thing is that Turkey has to be willing to build fleets to go after Italy and Austria has to be willing to go north into Germany. This allows both countries to grow without encroaching on each other. The Balkans are a bit of an issue, but can be resolved if both both countries are serious.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

In general, it's probably better for Turkey, but it can be good for Austria as well. Especially if Italy and/or Russia aren't serious about eliminating Turkey, it's much better for Austria to work with Turkey rather than have a Juggernaut to deal with.

True. I don't like Austria-Hungary going for Germany, though. That's like someone kicking himself in the face. Better if Austria-Hungary has his eyes on Russia, while Turkey makes his way into Italy for some spaghetti and meatballs.

I love this alliance as well, especially as Turkey.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
13 Feb 17 UTC
I agree Austria should go after Russia first, but after that he needs to be willing to go after Germany or he won't have anything to do. It isn't great, because it's usually a disaster for Austria and Germany to attack each other, but the reality is that once Turkey is in Italy and Southern Russia, it's not like Austria can take on Turkey.
stupidfighter (253 D)

In the scenario Abge outlines, I believe the assumption is that Russia has already been eliminated or pushed far to the north.

England is probably happy to be claiming Norway and StP from a broken Russia, if he's lucky enough not to be facting a FG alliance.
SuperMario0727 (204 D)

@stupidfighter
True. Once Russia is out of the game, the only way for Austria-Hungary and Turkey to make gains without attacking each other is for Austria-Hungary to attack Germany, and Turkey to attack Italy. But let's be honest: Austria-Hungary is playing right into the hands of Turkey. After Italy is finished, what stops Turkey from collapsing in on Austria-Hungary? Seems like a good way for Austria-Hungary to help Turkey win.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
13 Feb 17 UTC
Turkey should never have enough armies to attack Austria. If he does, it's not an AT; it's just a bad Austrian player. Further, by this time, either England or France should be quite strong as well. Austria is basically the fulcrum who can throw the game to T or E/F if the other steps out of line.
stupidfighter (253 D)
13 Feb 17 UTC
Agreed. If you're lucky enough as Austria to have multiple suitors tripping over themselves to wed their fates to yours in 01-02, Russia is probably the safer bet. However, Austria has a tendency to get hit hard early. I'd rather keep my enemies close, and help the Turk. If beating Austria would make Turkey a major solo threat, pointing this out to neighbors should win you some allies willing to strike Turkey in the Med or Russian territories.

SuperMario0727: I keep bringing this game up, but it was my most enjoyable game and a great example of an Austro-Hungarian-Turkish alliance: gameID=12882. In it, Le_Roi and I pretend to stab each other constantly, but each and every one of those stabs was fake and carefully constructed.

gunboat related - grabbing Munich in 1901
I find that a lot of players that start as France would actually try to get Burgundy into Munich in gunboats in Autumn 01. What is the point of that? Germany will have to build armies to get France out again and thus put England in a massively advantaged position.

Thoughts?

Why does WebDip have the colour allotment it does?
In the original rules, it says that Austria is Red, England: Dark Blue, France: Light Blue, Turkey: Yellow, Germany: Black, Russia: White, Italy: Green. Why change England and Russia?
