Putin Thread
We have a Trump Thread,so this seems fitting as I believe Russia will be newsworthy for quite a bit. I'll start you guys off: http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/russia-deploys-missile-violating-treaty-and-challenging-trump/ar-AAmVID5?li=BBmkt5R&ocid=spartandhp

Rules Question
It's a bit of a convoluted situation, but I'm actually confused about why WebDip adjudicated the way it did.

I've never made a rules question thread before in all the years I've played Diplomacy. How exciting.
gameID=190663
The situation I'm confused about is Spring 1906, around Prussia, Berlin and Silesia.
France ordered: Sil-Pru, Liv S Sil-Pru
Austria ordered: Pru-Sil, Boh S Sil-Pru, Ber-Sil, War S Ber-Sil

I understand why Pru-Sil and Sil-Pru failed. They both had equal supports and were attempting to switch places.

What I'm confused about is why Ber-Sil failed. The way I had approached it, I expected Prussia and Silesia to stand each other off, with Berlin coming in unhindered to dislodge Silesia. Obviously it wasn't adjudicated that way.

The only thing I can come up with is that my other move of Pru-Sil bounced my Ber-Sil move. However, Pru-Sil never succeeded. How could it bounce Berlin out?

Neither ber-sil nor pru-sil could succeed if they had equal supports. Your explanation is correct. In this case, what Prussia did actually didn't matter.

You need to move to a territory with more strength than anyone else to successfully move, because PRU-SIL attacked SIL with three and BER-SIL attacked SIL with one, BER-SIL does not succeed. The fact PRU-SIL did not succeed either is immaterial.

Also it doesn't look like BER-SIL had support? So it can't dislodge a one-power defense.

The army at Warsaw support move to Silesia from Berlin.
But as PW said, you need MORE support then anyone else, which that move didn't have.

Your final analysis is the only way it makes any sense. It is odd, because I believe I've seen situations when SEV attacked RUM with a strength of three, while RUM attacked SEV with strength of three, bouncing, and Austria snaked in and took RUM with a strength of only 2.

Looks like you just bounced your own two moves. It doesn't matter that one of them failed for a separate independent reason as well.
I actually thought that France's Sil-Pru move would block Pru-Sil from bouncing Ber-Sil.
To me, it seems a bit counterintuitive that a blocked move can still bounce another move.

Thanks for all the responses. Frankly, I'm somewhat surprised to still be learning rules to the game. You would think that five years is enough. I guess it's never too late.

The standoff between Rum and Sev also prevents Bud-Rum. Counter intuitive perhaps, but according to the rules.

You can have a situation where 3 beats 4, if you do something like:

A Mun - ber
A pru sup A mun - ber
A try - Mun
A bur sup A tyr - mun

Against
A ber - mun
A kiel sup A ber - mun
A ruhr sup A ber - mun

In this case your three are counted in berlin as beating the two from munich and counted a second time in munich as three versus the two coming into munich.

In your example, it has to have a single outcome without ambiguity. So there are two, one you work out that both you attacks are strenght 2, and cancel each other out (leaving neither moving) And thus France's Sil-Pru is now moving against and Prussia which isn't moving - so it should take Prussia.

Or your interpretaion that Prussia should have been cancelled out by Sil and berlin takes Sil. Those two outcomes depend on which order you decide to resolve first. And diplomacy is supposed to have the same outcome now matter which you resolve first. (It does, except in the case of paradoxes, which usually require a convoy, unless i'm mistaken)

Is this ethical?
Let's say I have a stalemate position, it's DSS, and I can eliminate players without risking anything at all, increasing my share of the pot.
Is it ethical to let those players live?
Does this change if it's anon or not anon?

North Africa & North Atlantic Ocean: The Oddities of the Board.
Not all territories in Diplomacy are created equally. Some are more useful than others. Territories such as North Africa and North Atlantic Ocean are often left vacant, especially at the start of the game. However, can anybody think of a useful and good reason for a player to enter either of these territories? In what situations might either of these territories prove useful?

I think its a shame we are sexualizing and romanticizing torture. I believe that at the time these novels came out; they directly helped normalize waterboarding and guantanamo bay.

Italy Opening Strategy: Early Attack on France?
Venice goes to Piedmont, Rome goes to Tuscany, and Naples goes to Tyrrhenian Sea. If France moved Marseilles to Spain, he will be forced to take a guess at whether Italy will enter Marseilles or leave it vacant. If Spain re-enters Marseilles, France will have a slow start against Italy. And if Italy gets into Marseilles and Tunis, he will get two builds. Thoughts?

Where'd the new rules come from?
I usually try to stay updated on what people talk about in the forum daily. Recently I haven't been able to and I came back to find that their are new rules regarding how shitty we can be to each other on the forum. I understand that there was a thread that was so bad the mods felt the need to make more rules. Anyone care to tell me what was said that was bad enough to warrant this?

St. Petersburg to Findland: Should Russia Ever Make This Move?
The title says it all: is there ever a situation or scenario in which Russia should move his fleet in St. Petersburg (South Coast) to Finland? What kind of diplomatic arrangements need to be made for such a move to occur?

Austro-Hungarian-Turkish Alliance: Just for Fun? Or Turkish Delight?
Turkey and Austria-Hungary work together against Russia, with a passive Italian player. Turkey moves into Bulgaria, Black Sea, and Armenia. And Austria-Hungary moves into Rumania and Galicia. Is this just pure fantasy? Or will Austria-Hungary and Turkey be treating themselves to Turkish delight by the end of it?

gunboat related - grabbing Munich in 1901
I find that a lot of players that start as France would actually try to get Burgundy into Munich in gunboats in Autumn 01. What is the point of that? Germany will have to build armies to get France out again and thus put England in a massively advantaged position.

Thoughts?
