One thing to privatize a rail line, another to privatize someone else's land, specifically that land... good job, Ecuador.

Three quick questions from a total noob.
I just joined as there is some interest at my office to have an ongoing game throughout the day, and I suggested webDiplomacy since we can set up our own server with the code from Sourceforge.

First question: Let's say we setup a game with 24 hours per phase. If all players enter their moves and are ready before the 24 hours is up, does the game advance to the next phase or does it always wait until the full 24 hours has passed?

Second question: Why is it that all the icons for armies and fleets are the same color? Doesn't it get confusing as the game wears on as far as which unit belongs to who?

Third question: Why is there no email alert system? I'm pretty sure that some of the online variants of Risk have a system in place to email a player anytime a new turn has started. Seems like it would be extremely useful for players who may not always remember to check the site.

Hi Jim,

No need to set up your own server. Just have your officemates join here, alert the mods that you are from the same office (as your IP will probably be the same) via email, and play in private games.

There is no email alert system and people just need to remember to log in. In an office game, this could be a problem on weekends.

And the game will advance as soon as the last person readies their orders no matter how much time is left in the phase.

That's mean! He sounds legit to me. Although a reply or a "thanks" would be nice, too!

Not a multi, brand new here. Thanks for the info though! We still may set up our own server though just to keep it all within the same office. It's great to know that the game will auto-advance after everyone has entered orders. This means I could easily setup games with a 3 to 7 day phase to allow time for people who travel often, but still make games move along if everyone is entering their moves accordingly.

They are, but just so you know, there's a no pants policy there.

You will have to change your name to NoPants2WhiteLine or if you were a bit more of a feminist, NoPanties2WhiteLine.

If I remember correctly, originally email alerts were not included because there was concern that it would be too much of a load on the old shared server we were on. We're on a much better server now, so it might be something that is added at some point.

If you ran your own webdip server, and had someone familiar with php, you could add email alerts yourself. There is already code in there for sending emails as part of the user registration process, so using it for email alerts should be fairly easy.

As for the unit colors, that is often a complaint of people new to webdip. But you get used to it. The color behind the unit indicates who owns the unit. After fall moves and spring moves for non-SCs, the territory's color is changed to whoever is in it. For SCs after spring moves, if the player who is in the SC doesn't own it, there is a colored box behind the unit that indicates this.

In my opinion it works quite well. My only issue is that often during the retreats phase, I'm looking ahead and forget to account for the dislodged unit that hasn't retreated yet and so doesn't show on the map.

The other thing to be aware of is that failed moves and some other stuff doesn't show on the small map. So always check the big map to see what all has happened after each phase. There you can see failed supports, failed convoys, and such.

My first diplomacy game was done by email at my work in the 90s. Would have been nice to have webdip way back then instead of having to have one person be the game master and not get to play.

Have fun!

Site Error/Speed
The site is currently running slow. It was timing out so I restarted the server. We've let Kestas know, and hopefully it will be running back to normal speed soon.

A serious educational project: part I Mathematics
I plan to spend a month or so this summer creating an individualized experimental math curriculum that would teach the mathematically inclined the subject and its history, starting with basic computations to calculus, number theory, matrices, applied numerical methods, and so forth. Can anyone suggest books, curricula and websites? Is anyone interested in doing part of the research and development with me?

Sweet 16 march madness tournament 2013!
While the Sweet 16 is coming up in the tournament, the games are getting closer and more interesting! Michigan State Vs Duke, Michigan vs Kansas Oregon vs Louisville Ohio state vs Arizona. Even though those aren't the 16 teams but those are the better games. What game sticks out the most? Predictions?

Can you guys review my essay for English?
We have a project in my english class where we have to write 7 essays on a particular topic. My topic is popularity, and I chose to make this particular essay a satire. I showed to my English teacher, but when she was in the middle of the second paragraph she said it was really good but she didn't want to finish it so she wouldn't spoil it for herself when I finally turned it it. So I want to see what you here think. See inside.
